“Well impressed”

The Earl of Desmond Hotel

Having checked out the previous reviews I was dubious about our choice of hotel, but our doubts proved unfounded. The rooms were comfortable, the meals were presented well, more than ample and very tasty.
The staff - receptionists, bar and dining room staff and domestics - were ready to assist with any queries, and solved our only problem quite quickly and strange efficiently. (Our request for a screwdriver and/or electrian brought a barman with a dinner knife. Luckily we are adaptable too!
The grounds were lovley, and a peaceful retreat after busy days.
There are one or two niggles - a faulty socket, and the toilet flush being on the bath side of the shower screen. But we put the latter down to Irish quirkiness.

“An enjoyable stay - Clean and Comfortable”

After reading the last couple of reviews we weren't looking forward to our stay at the hotel, but fortunately on arrival our fears were unfounded. I can honestly say that we were very impressed with the comfortable ambience of the public rooms. Our bedroom was bright and clean with fresh towels daily. The food was plain and not very interesting, but perfectly adequate for the tariff we were charged.

I would have no hesitation in staying there again and recommending it to friends.

“We won't stay there again”

We stayed at the Earl of Desmond last week (August 9th) and were glad to have a roof over our heads because everything else in the area was full. We felt that the room was overpriced, given it's outdated and worn appearance, but our big complaint was the noisy wedding party that poured out into the front parking lot and gardens after 1 am. More objectionable was the partying, loud laughter, stomping, yelling, door slamming and retching, up and down the 3rd floor corridor right outside our room from about 1:30 am to after 2 am. I'm sure the wedding and reception were profitable for the hotel, but the late night disruption was not fair to the paying guests wanting a decent night's sleep. On the positive side, the public areas and the gardens were well kept. The restaurant was clean and bright; wait staff was friendly and professional. The food was good and plentiful.

“Bad experience”

The Earl of Desmond Hotel

Seriously bad value at €150 per night. Four star prices for what should be classed a 2 star hotel.Very poor advertisment for Irish hotels.
Stayed two nights requested a change of room as the room had a damp smell. Although there was availability on the Friday night was told that nothing could be done as the hotel was fully booked on the Saturday.
The rooms are what you would expect for a 1980's hotel and are in need of a make over for the prices they charge. The flush for the toilet was in the shower.
The quality of the breakfast was appalling an overcooked fry with burnt toast. On complaining I was met with a standard of customer care consistent with all of the above.Their fist and only concern was to secure payment immediately upon check in.
I feel sorry for the busloads of Americans who stay here to be ripped off. I could accept these standards if they were priced accordingly like €70-€80 per night for the room.

“Great events hall, nice bathrooms, rooms a little dull”

The Earl of Desmond Hotel

Dec 2, 2005

Attended a wedding in December and found the residents bar and hall for the reception splendid.

The service was a little gruff from the waiters and waitresses and got gruffer as the evening progressed, ie sandwiches being slammed down without a whimper. However, management was much more attentive.

My room had a wonderful bathroom but I found the bed arrangement, one double, one single, rather odd. What strange group was it supposed to accommodate?

Mediocre coffee and tea sachets, disgusting long life milk, with a kettle, make my heart sink, wherever I find them. I'd rather go without. Better to provide bottles of water.

It's a little out of the way of Tralee itself, so travel will be a problem without a car but overall, the sight of it as you pull in is enough to raise the spirits. It is a bit grand from the outside.
