The last time I stayed in this hotel was 4 years ago and I swore "Never Again" but alas I relented out of convenience and quickly realised that i shoud have stuck to my guns. The staff are rude and unhelpful, to say the hotel needs updating is an understatement, at this stage it should just be knocked. The bedrooms are grubby, paint peeling off walls, stained blankets, dirty, grotty bathroom with a lack of towels and paper shower mats.
The noise from other bedrooms kept us awake all night. We rang reception a few times, with a tut in response and little else. The second night we moved to a different room but the noise was just as bad and the facilities worse.
The leisure centre is dated and dirty, the staff again unhelpful and rude. There are no lockers for your belongings and just a few plastic chairs in a grotty smelly steam room.
Breakfast is poor, the bar was dirty, with glasses and rubbish all over the place.
The whole hotel has a damp unpleasant smell, an unfriendly atmosphere, with staff who look unhappy and have no interest in the guests.
And for all of this we paid 80 Euro per person per night.......
There are plenty of good hotels in Killarney, there is no need to resort to staying in this one.

“great weekend”

Gleneagle Hotel

Apr 28, 2008

i have just returned from a brilliant weekend at the Gleneagle, as part of a group who were attending the Scor Finals in the INEC. i was very skeptical about staying there after all the bad reviews i read, but i have to wonder if the people that wrote them are just people you can never please....
our room was on the 4th floor, it was absolutely spotless, huge comfy bed, lovely bathroom, again it was spotless...... the staff were amazing, apart from one guy who was collection glasses in the green room, he was the only one that didnt smile or speak. nothing was any trouble to any of them!! i think you can tell a lot about the hotel by the breakfasts you get to your room, ours was delicious, on saturday morning i had the yummiest scrambled egg ever, so my compliments to the chef!!! we also ate in the chestnut restaraunt on saturday evening, they were very busy, but the service was so fast i couldnt believe it! the one and only complaint i would have was the heat in the INEC, it was unbearable, my partner was in the set dancing final and i was nervous enough about that, without having to deal with the heat also. will definately be returning

Our group of four adults and an eleven year old stayed the week of March 16 - 23. It could not have been better. I can not tell you when we have enjoyed Ireland more. They have thought of everything right down to breakfast. Our granddaughter enjoyed the pool and other facilities. The hotel restaurants were A-1. would I return? In a heartbeat.

Gleneagle Hotel

Mar 31, 2008

i and a group of 19 stayed at your hotel muckross road killarney,16/03/08 21/03/08. we all found the rooms very cold,so much we had to get heaters,at one point a plumber had to becalled, three of the group are over 70yrs,meal times where set,the food was fine, the staff where polite.you advertise on your wed tea facilities in rooms,we had none so we had to buy a kettle.THE enterainment was left to one guy singing in a bar which had no asess for a disable person,as there are stairs. are group was told we could not use the ballroom unless we paid 10euro per night.so we didt have the enterainment your hotel said.on leaving your hotel i left a pair of shoes which i rang up about, hanging on to the phone for 20 mins, to be told there was no shoes i was totally disgusted,as i only departed .we have be disappointed, angrey and it seems to be discriminated against for travling with ulsterbus. awaiting your reply yours in anticipation catherine brown.

“Agree With Negative Reviews - Terrible!!”

Gleneagle Hotel

1 of 5 stars
Cork Ireland
Mar 23, 2008

We hadn't planned to leave a review of this hotel but having read previous reviews it seems only fair to add our coments - We stayed here ( despite my reservations from reading previous reviews) for the Gilbert O Sullivan concert in the INEC We stayed on Sat + Sun 27+28 Oct 2007.

1. Check in staff at reception were obviously under pressure due to large number of people checking in/out requesting information etc. ..there were two young ladies working at check in. They were neither pleasant or abrupt so if you are sensitive about a nice Irish welcome forget it!!.

2. The room was a disgrace (Fawlty Towers watch your back theres a new kid on the block) . I read with notice the official Gleneagles website "The Gleneagle hotel is one of the leading hotels in Ireland, offering the very best in fun and entertainment, with unbeatable getaway and package deals year-round" That would immediately explain the rating of 40/45 hotels in Killarney Dated rooms...no tea making facilities.. fittings falling apart ...tv remote with no batteries ...paper thin walls etc the list is endless.

3. Its refreshing to see the manager replying to these negative reviews..BUT with the usual blurb unfortunately ...I stayed in a hotel in Beirut during the worst of the troubles there and I still had a kettle to make coffee/tea...the excuse used, just doesn't wash...

4. On a good note the staff at the Chesnut Tree bar were excellent and the bar is really nice ..despite the ferocious draught coming from the exit to the smokers area...please put a self-closing hinge on that door!!! I am a smoker and I noticed that nobody closed the door on the way out or in to go for a smoke..we enjoyed the residents bar with live music..staff (I believe were Sri-Lankan) were under extreme pressure and it showed)

5. We enjoyed the bufet style dinner restaurant ...really good waiting staff and servers!! and good value excellently cooked food.

6. We are not fussy people we have stayed at many many hotels all over the world in the last twenty years we are both 39...and we dont spend all day in our room in fact its more or less a place to rest the head after a good night out for us and have a decent scrub up ....but you really do expect(wrongly) the basics to be right.

7. The INEC is excellent!! and booking staff really nice.

8. This hotel is by no means (even with a gargantuan stretch of the imagination) 3* or indeed 2* a lot more work needed ...more staff ...more customer related training....better facilities and a total overhaul ...and maybe it can justifiably claim its self-confessed greatness as per its website...a huge dissapointment for the price paid!!
