For $200 US, the stay was equivalent of a substandard, ill-appointed "midwestern" hotel, not that of a capital city, only one block from the home of Oscar Wilde! The reception staff was surly and un-responsive when I arrived on a rainy night after a long drive from Galway. He wanted to give me the worst room of choice--across from reception on the street level. When I inquired about a choice of a second, he told me that he had no responsibility to give me another option, when in fact one was available and I had to insist after an unpleasant conflict. That typified the two day stay. Most disappointing was that there was no decent reading light in the room. Literally I had to turn the tiny lamp on its side so as to get a light on to a written page. The ceiling light was a bulb and a chinese balloon shade--cute in the hippy days, but in a Dublin Georgian Townhouse? The place has the potential of being so great and nice, but falls terribly short. Of the 10 days in Ireland, tthis was the worst hotel or B&B experience-- which included a stay Donegal, Sligo, and Galway.
Galway being the finest accomodations. I was happy to leave the Fitzwilliam and would rather spend much more just to have a better experience.
