“Relaxing experience”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

4 of 5 stars
Glasgow, United Kingdom

We stayed in this hotel for a weekend break and had a lovely time. The scenery surrounding the hotel is beautiful and we were fortunate with the weather. The hotel can be reached easily from Glasgow by car, though the road to the hotel from Aberfoyle is very narrow! The hotel facilities are excellent with a surprisingly wide range of activities available in the sports centre. The food served in the restaurant area was delicious, though you do need to dress smartly! There is also a grill bar which is less formal, but we didn't try this out. The staff were helpful and our room was large and clean. The only negatives are that the decor is a bit dated (1980's) and the rooms with a loch view are in short supply.

“Over priced, slightly run down scottish hotel”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

We stayed here for our 1st year anniversary and had heard good things…however the entrance to the hotel is round the back and is slightly run down. We are from Edinburgh and used to the weather so we didn’t let that bother us and played a couple of games of tennis and hired bikes which was great fun (although I spent most of the time pushing my bike),
The room was clean and big but was a bit tiered looking. The bathroom was very new and modern although no bath robes or complementary moisturiser was supplied.
In the main building, The bar, Restaurant and garden room have been recently redone and look so lovely however the al a carte meal is expensive and we’d already paid a lot for our double room with a loch view.
The brassiere which is in a 70s style annex a couple of steps from the main building was so dated and cheap looking as was the bar. They have large windows that look onto the pool at one side and a large ice rink (indoor bowling green in the summer) so isn’t the nicest setting for a meal or drinks.
In total for 3 nights we spent over £600 for our room and meals and we’re not big drinkers as we’d bought several bottles of champagne before we’d arrived at the hotel.
For this price we could have had a weekend in Paris!!!
I really wish Scottish hotels would pull their socks up as many are taken over by larger chains and not renovated to a high enough standard….disappointing!

“21ST Birthday Surprise ”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

Aug 16, 2007
5/5 found this review helpful

I was staying at Aberfolye with my cousin (26), aunt and uncle, along with another family with young children. The scenery was breathtaking driving up to this hotel- lovely area for cycling (if you dont mind hills...and by hills, i mean mountains!) and for scenic drives. Some beautiful rural towns with alot more to offer shop-wise than the very basic town of Aberfoyle itself.

Whilst appreciating good food, i admit i do have a very limited palet. Some food on the menu was extremely OTT and i found myself wishing they'd have something more widely enjoyed on the menu. Dont misunderstand, the food was superb...when i knew what i was eating! Presentation was always immaculate and staff helpful. I had a surprise birthday cake from the staff after our group meal, which was fantastic, if a little embarrassing in such a fancy hotel!

Rooms were tidy, and well kept on a daily basis. Cleaning staff were especially friendly, wishing us a pleasant day and asking us what we'd been up to, at the end of each day.

A lovely break, thoroughly enjoyed by the whole group.

“Perfect Location for Tranquil Retreat”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

Set overlooking Loch Ard 4 miles from village of Aberfoyle.

We stayed in a 2 bed apt with views of the Loch, a peaceful location.

The apartment was big and spacious and well equipped, very comfortable.

There is a swimming pool, sauna and gym on site which were very good. Also many indoor facilities such as bowls, badminton, table tennis etc.

The watersports centre offers canoeing, sailing etc and the hire of mountain bikes - superb tracks right around the Loch.

Staff throughout the complex all very helpful and welcoming.

Food at restaurant located within leisure centre was excellent and good value for money.

Ideal location the explore the Trossachs and Loch Lomond.

“Tired, dated and in need of a facelift!”

Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Resort

We have just spent a couple of days at the Forest Hills Resort where we had booked the ‘romantic break offer’ advertised as comprising of DB&B with a bottle of champagne, box of chocolates and bucks fizz breakfast, in reality what we received was a ½ bottle of champagne and a few matchmakers and we are still waiting for the bucks fizz to materialise. On their website they advertise all sorts of offers but find that most of them are unavailable when you actually book and not only that we were then going to be charged for our infant when children are supposed to stay free of charge!
Hotel itself was tired, dated and in need of some care and attention, not to mention a lick of paint. On the plus side the food was excellent although you didn’t always get what you ordered from the menu, although it did resemble the original choice in some ways. Unfortunately all the Eastern European restaurant staff couldn’t muster up a smile between them and looked totally miserable all of the time, although most were good at their jobs and food was always well presented and piping hot, compliments to the chef.
On reflection we certainly wont be rushing back to this hotel, and its time the management looked at recruiting some friendly faces on arrival at reception so they don’t scare all their guests away!
If you’re looking for a bit of luxury and hospitality give this place a miss!
