My girlfriend and I did this tour last month, having been befriended by Don and his pals in one of Ayr's fine pubs (Billy Bridges on The Sandgate, since you ask) the previous night.
Don hot-footed it from Alloway, still dressed as Rabbie Burns, to meet us when the Tourist Information guy called him on our behalf. He was happy to make the effort, even though there were just the two of us, and we had a very enjoyable couple of hours. I won't spoil it for folks, other than to say that getting to go up the St John Tower was probably worth the money on its own.
I visit family in Ayr at least a couple of times a year and have a decent local knowledge, but I still found this tour really informative, with Don explaining the "known" facts, the "accepted" versions and the mythology regarding various historical events. He has a hunger for the history and culture of the place and is working hard to promote all Ayr has to offer (i.e. not just Burns). I wish him luck and would recommend this tour for both visitors and curious locals.
