“Hell on Earth”

Craig Tara

Aug 10, 2008

We arrrived on Monday 7th July and booked in. We were given our keys to the 'chalet' (!) and decided to check it out. How can they call it a chalet? It was two small bedrooms with a shower room! We had travelled with my daughter and her friend and had booked it through the sun holiday scheme. We weren't expecting much, just good, clean accomodation. Our chalet stank and the mattresses were disgusting. We turned around and went straight back to the reception and waited behind a queue of disgruntled customers. I asked to be up-graded but was told that there was nothing available. We asked the kids what would they like to do, and they said they would like to stay. We decided to give it a go.

Big mistake! The park was filthy - cigarette ends piled high on bins. The special play park surface was slowly being destroyed by older children whose parents seem to spend their whole holiday propped up at the bar. We went to report the incident and 2 men came down, put some cones up on the bald patches and then disappeared! They ignored the youths walking around them with handfuls of playground surface in their hands!

Haven really need to up their game with this park or soon it will be just a place for neds and their families to stay. We spent every day out in the Ayrshire countryside visiting places and dreaded returning to campsite. The kids wouldn't go anywhere on their own at the camp as they were intimidated by the bad behaviour of the other youths.

The only bright spots of this holiday was the heads of ayr park and shopping in Ayr itself.

Never go there, no matter how good a deal you get!

We paid £700 to stay in one of the 'higher quality' caravans for a week. If you read the 'Haven' brochure, do not be misled the photos of clean properties, modern facilities and so on. We arrived at 4pm on a Saturday, to find a tired looking 1960s/70s park. The first caravan we were allocated was filthy, with toenail clippings all over the carpet (!), and dirty bed linen. When we returned to the reception, we were surrounded by families complaining about dirty rooms, with one man described his caravan as 'appearing to have been trashed'. We were given the keys to another place, which felt like a DSS trailer, had a burned out set of steps to the door, and was surrounded by families who seemed to think nothing of using four letter swear words in front of their own and other people's pre-school children.

To give the reception staff their due, and they are working under very difficult circumstances, we got a complete refund, and drove back to Glasgow. We were able to get a night in the city centre travel inn, followed by 6 nights in a really nice flat, for less than we would have paid to remain at Craig Tara.

I would suggest that people avoid this place, as it needs a very serious makeover.

“Whole Place Is A Disgrace!”

We didnt pay too much for this short break (thank goodness) but the whole place was just, to put it bluntly, rubbish!!

Our caravan had mould up the curtains, a broken lounge chair and a broken bed. We had to phone twice to get someone out to fix it, this was ment to be a "luxury" caravan so i would have hated to see a standard one!

The "Bowling Alley" consisted of 2 lanes that you put your money in (one was broken though) .... its not actually a proper bowling!!

There wasnt really much to do at all!!

Played the bingo at night which was a nightmare as we bought 4 tickets and then i was told they had no bingo pens left, when I asked where i could get some staff just shrugged their shoulders.

Swimming was alright, although the pools were quite cold!!

Definetly would not go back and I would advise people not to waste their time with this place.

“Fun for families!”

My husband and I decided to take our 4 year old son to Craig tara for a break. We stayed Monday - Friday. We booked through the Sun holiday tokens and upgraded our caravan to a "prestige caravan." After reading the other reviews I was very apprehensive about the cleanliness of the place.
We were pleasantly surprised to find our caravan exceptionally clean with lovely crisp white linen sheets.
The park in general was very clean with staff out picking litter every morning and tending to the gardens.
The entertainment at night was good family fun and our son had a ball. I would definately recommend it to families.

“Medieval mattresses”

We booked Craig Tara through the Sun vouchers scheme. The website for this park is soooo much better than the reality. Having taken into consideration that we booked via 'The Sun' and only paid a reduced rate we did not expect to be staying at the Ritz . We also paid an extra £40 to upgrade to a "luxury" apartment. Upon arrival, check in was reasonably speedy but it was not in the school holidays.
We were directed to No 101 Cassilis, a two storey apartment in Burns Square.
Outside, you would think that you'd arrived at Frank Gallaghers house at the Chatsworth Estate. ( Shameless, for those who have never seen the programme ) inside was worse.

There was mould growing up the windows .
The decor was very old, very tired, very shabby.
The linen had old mould stains on it. A sniff test did verify that it had been cleaned but it really should be thrown away.
The mattresses..........oh my god . They were revolting. They had various stains on them ..........we really did not want to lie on them but we had just driven from Manchester with two kids and Grandma so we had no choice. The amount of wine consumed was sufficient to block out any other thoughts and rather than sleep, i suspect we were unconscious.
God only knows who or how they could class this apartment as luxury. It was dreadful. After securing alternative accommodation on the isle of Arran via the local tourist information centre, we checked out 3 days early and explained the situation. A weak apology with a promise to pass my comments on to the management.
As i said before, we were not expecting the Ritz but "luxury" was a gross misrepresentation .
On another note, we went to the Mash and Barrel for a meal. I had a hot chicken and bacon salad at £8.95 (overpriced) This took 45 minutes to arrive ,which would be understandable if the place was busy. It was 6.45 and practically empty. My meal was very poor. Dry crusty old chicken and the tomatoes and cucumber had been sliced for so long it had sealed over.
You might wonder why we didn't complain beforehand but we did not want any alternative accommodation . We just wanted to get away.
