I have now stayed at this hotel 4 times (September 2006, January 2007, July 2007 and January 2008).
I love driving down their entrance driveway, it just reminds me how much I enjoy staying and eating here. A very grand, long journey to the hotel itself through beautiful countryside. When you arrive you are treated very well and the staff are very polite, attentive and courteous.
First off I must state that it is not cheap to stay here. As long as you are aware of the costs you cannot complain now, can you?
As has been stated you can either be given a room in the main hotel, stay in a chalet-style lodge, or in the Riverside building a few hundred metres up the river.
I have stayed in the main hotel and the Riverside and I actually prefer the latter. Whilst the main building has the charm and the beauty, some of the rooms are a little old-fashioned, you know, creaky floorboards. Overall though the quality is fine, and I have not had any experiences of hearing delivery trucks or guests getting up at 6 a.m. to go shooting, like others mention.
As Riverside is only a few years old it is decorated in a more modern hotel fashion. I like it there as I hardly notice any other guests and I find it quite peaceful. You are more likely to get a river view here too.
The grounds are great to walk around in, especially on a nice morning before breakfast. Go down to the river and stroll around to get some exercise.
Now I can finally mention the food. Before dinner you are seated beside a log fire or in a side, drawing room. Order a drink and check out a wonderful menu. I must have had about 15 courses here now in total, and I can honestly say each has been excellent, at least they have had interesting twists on normal standards. I say 15 as you often get a bonus little course thrown in, something else to try (though this did not happen on my last visit). I am not a posh idiot but I have to say it is a little treat when you plan to reach over to pour yourself some wine and the head waiter appears to do that task for you. Nice! On our second visit we too had the owner come up to us and introduce himself, he seemed genuinely interested to hear what we thought of it all. Great to go through to the bar after a fabulous dinner and run up a tab.
The breakfast is pretty good too, though if you have eaten well the night before you may have to burn some calories overnight to make sure you can fit in as much breakfast as you can handle. The usual toast and cereal stuff, but also kippers, full scottish breakfast, fruits, coffee tea etc, fruit juices, cheese & ham too.
Sorry I'm waffling on. In short, beautiful surroundings, lovely hotel, rooms are quite good, staff all very professional and polite, brilliant food, overall a little pricey but at least you are warned here! I love Ballathie House Hotel and I want to keep going back.
