“Wedding at Nairn”

Newton Hotel and Highland Conference Center

4 of 5 stars
Scottish Borders
Jun 30, 2008

What can you say about the look of the Hotel? Amazing! You drive up the tree lined drive towards the hotel and then you see this amazing building set in well kept land.
We arrived on the friday evening to notice an evening wedding do was in full swing, needless to say that the parking was a nightmare as the car park isn't that big.
Check-in was friendly and efficient, and then to our room in the original part. A large room with a small double bed, and as has been mentioned before it needs some updating, as the bed wasn't the best and it had seen better times.
Only one member of staff covering the bar for approx 50 guests, not a good idea as the service was slow.
Breakfast was what you'd expect and staff where helpful.
For the wedding reception and evening do i'd have to say the staff where top quality and very professional. The wedding dinner was good but the pudding was out of this world.
Overall a good place to come and stay, and the staff do a very good job at making the wedding party run smoothly. Would have been an excellent rating, but the rooms need updating in the original part of the building and the lack of staff on the friday night was a letdown.

“Lovely”

Newton Hotel and Highland Conference Center

Apr 1, 2008

My fiance took me to this hotel for a romantic night away. We were checked in very efficiently even though there was a small wedding on. We then went up to our room which was huge! Lovely big bed, gorgeous bathroom & nice view. We went down to the bar after strolling around Nairn & had some lovely wine. Dinner was gorgeous. I had Smoked Salmon to start, Chicken with Haggis for main & profiteroles for dessert which was all top notch food. The staff were all really helpful & I would stay at this hotel again. Drink was a bit pricey though. £4 for a baileys!

“Loved the Newton”

Newton Hotel and Highland Conference Center

We recently stayed in The Newton Hotel in Nairn and it was lovely. We booked an Executive room on bed and breakfast. This allocated a room (115) in the newer extension part of the hotel. The room was large with a huge (bigger than kingsize) bed. The bathroom was one of the largest I have seen in a hotel with separate bath and separate shower, a huge sink area with lots of room for toiletries and a tiled floor with underfloor heating.

We ate our evening meal in the hotels restaurant. It was a little pricey but you pay for the convenience. The meal was from a set menu (table d'hote) 2 courses for £20 and 3 for £25. Although there was no a la carte there was a good and varied choice from the set menu and everyone in our party found something they liked. Breakfast was also good with cereals, pastries and fruit self service and then a good hot breakfast and toast served to your table.

The bar area of the hotel is very comfortable and welcoming with lots of armchair type seating and a lovely fire.

The setting of the hotel is beautiful with a well kept mature garden. Parking is free.

I was sad we only had one night here on our touring holiday and will definitely return for a stay of 2 or 3 nights next time.

A lot of complaints from the reviews seem to be based on rooms in the old building so I would definitely make sure you have one of the rooms on the new building. I would guess the Standard rooms would put you in the old building.

Also I don't think this hotel is part of the Swallow group anymore.

“Stay Away From This Hotel”

Newton Hotel and Highland Conference Center

Stay away from this hotel by all means. We booked a master room and prepaid for it. When we reached there, they tried to put us into a standard room thinking we would not notice. When we pointed out, they acted in surprise and told us that they already rented out all master rooms.

We didn’t have a choice as it was too late to look for another hotel. The room was smelly, carpet had stains all over the rooms, mold around tub, plaster coming off on corners. There were 2 faucets for hot and cold water a foot apart on sink with a warning that hot water is too hot. If you just resort to use cold water, it would cause hypothermia as you can not mix both. I can’t even begin to explain the faucet in tub. The trash can had garbage we checked in was never collected during our stay. Shampoo and body wash were never replaced in the bathroom.

“Adequate”

Newton Hotel and Highland Conference Center

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend away in January 2008, on arrival we were upgraded to the Macmillan Suite which was larger than my house, this was situated in the old part and could be doing with a little bit of TLC, but in general it was a comfortable room. Breakfast was okay but oyu have to be early to make full use of the continential breakfast as it doesnt seem to get replaced that often. Evening meals were very nice. One thing I would point out is that some websites advertyise this hotel with a leisure club which is situated in a sister hotel 500 yards away, this was the main reason i booke it, on my arrival I discovered that they were no longer part of the same chain and therefore could not use the facilities at this hotel. Overall, adequate for a couple of nights especially if you are planning to use it for a base to go sightseeing.
