“Good location”

Ardgowan Hotel

Aug 7, 2008

The Ardgowan wasn’t my first choice after checking reviews of hotels in the area but after trying a few other places with no luck I booked the small double room, was advised it was smaller than the other double rooms and it was discounted to £100 per night. The room was clean and comfortable but was small as advised and the scaffolding and non existing view wasn’t the best thing to wake up to. We were quite happy with our room (and could get over how small it was as we were only staying 1 night) until the gentleman next door returned to his room, at this point we could hear absolutely everything he was doing in the bathroom, not that he was being loud but because of the poor sound insulation. The breakfast was good but didn’t like having to work out what to do with the toaster. Didn’t eat in the restaurant but it did look really busy, we had a few drinks in the bar and the selection of whiskies is worth trying.

Overall an ok stay but found the room price a little expensive (but relatively low for St Andrews).

“Reasonable for the price”

Ardgowan Hotel

Stayed here for 2 nights after booking by phone. Have been to St Andrews many times and try to stay somewhere different each time. Front desk staff very friendly. Stayed in their smallest double room, which they warned us was small at the time of booking. Scaffolding was still there, right outside the window, which we weren't warned about. Fine for a short stay but the room was probably too small for anyone staying longer or thinking of spending a lot of time in the room.

Breakfast was OK although a bit limited in choice. You toast your own bread and the toasters were quite enthusiastic, so on both mornings there was a smell of burnt toast hovering in the air.

Location is brilliant - short walk in one direction to the Old Course and the beach and in the other direction to the town. Parking possible (with a bit of luck and/or persistence) in either direction a short walk away.

Price probably about right compared to all the other properties in the town and we got much less passing night-time noise than we have experienced in some of the B&Bs and hotels further along the road towards town.

“Basil Fawlty eat your heart out”

This hotel is definitely not worth its three star rating: a B&B would have been superior. The friendly receptionist did not compensate for the £60 a night each we paid for a small, dingy, dark corner 'double' room with scaffolding right outside the window about which we had not been forewarned. The aspect was not cheered by the filthy carpet, dusty window sill, ancient air freshener, weak shower or basic TV. The tea and coffee making facilities were poor quality. There was no soap, shampoo or shower cap for the shower which was weak. Noise carried from the entrance and stairs as clients came and went during the night. Breakfast was passable, with only one waitress serving and no welcome or direction on entering the dining area. Guests were left to suss out a system which included making their own toast (breakfast was cold by the time you had caught up with this one) and, I kid you not ,there was a full size kitchen bin in the middle of the dining room floor for clients to put their rubbish in! They cashed our VISA BEFORE we checked out. Naturally, nobody asked us if we had enjoyed our stay and there was not a feedback form in sight. What a waste of hard earned £120. Next time, bring your tent or better still, pay a bit more for a superior hotel!!

The Hotel has completed a £1.2 million refurbishment with completely new decor and furnishings designed by Michal Pietranek who has worked extensively with the Royal Family. The furnishings have been rated higher than 3 star standard by Visit Scotland. While the work on the rooms was completed on schedule, the builders were delayed with the external works. The work is now complete and the scaffolding will be coming down this week. The vast majority of our guests and regulars have been understanding and supportive of the upgrading programme.

All rooms are ensuite with new bathrooms. All rooms have digital television with radio, our complimentary trays are stocked with named branded products on them with a selection of coffee & tea to decafe coffee & tea, (including green tea) they also have shortbread and assorted biscuits. We provide in all our rooms liquid soap and shampoo/shower gel. Our breakfast consists of a buffet, on full view of the restaurant for fruit juices, toast, coffee, cereal etc followed by a good selection of hot dishes freshly prepared to order. We believe our reception is very open to comment and we do have a guest comment book openly displayed.

“Great location, great food, friendly staff”

We were a party of 8 golfers and we stayed for 2 nights in the Ardgowan Hotel. Arrived in St.Andrew's at 12 noon and rooms were ready. Rooms were small but perfectly adequate - we were golfing all day and only used the rooms to sleep in. Package included breakfast and evening meal. Food was excellent quality and wine was reasonably priced. One evening we were even entertained by a bagpipe player - organised for another group in the restaurant. The bar was in the restaurant and was well priced with extremely friendly staff - received a thorough explanation on Scotch whisky (the Scots leave out the 'e' in whiskey). Staff looked after our baggage after we checked out until our airport transfer later that evening. Located just around the corner from the Old Course - we carried our bags down each day.
Overall an excellent location for golfers. Rooms may be a bit small and dated if you have to spend time in them - but who is going to spend time in there hotel room when in the home of golf.

“An extremely unpleasant experience”

Ardgowan Hotel

We booked the Ardgowan Hotel for 4 of us for one night as we were attending a friend's wedding at RAF Leuchars. The cost per room was £100 so we thought it would have been very acceptable for that price. On arrival we were given two rooms at opposite ends of the hotel although we had told them we were part of a wedding party . Breakfast he then announced was 7:30am - 9:00am (Sunday morning - and could not be moved - even although the clocks were going forward that evening which made it a 6:30am start. I had to ask for help with my luggage upstairs when I arrived as my husband was parking the car. The male receptionist ran up stairs ahead of me and dumped my bag outside the door and then left me to struggle with my suit bag and my wedding outfit which eventually I had to put down on carpet to open bedroom door. My sister then phoned to say that her room (very small) was smelling of dampness and that because of scaffolding at the window the room was extremely dark and she couldn't see out (photo attached). She then phoned the receptionist who said he couldnd't smell anything - it must be her imagination. He said he would put an air freshner in there as that was the best he could do. On return from the wedding there were three buckets outside our bedroom door as there was a leak on the roof (photo attached)! The sound proofing was non existent as we could hear the gentlmen next door empty his bladder in his toilet! It was probably the worst hotel(?) we have ever stayed in, not just because of the lack of courtesy from the staff but because the accommodation was completely unacceptable for £100 per night per room. By the way does having a hairdryer mounted behind the bedroom curtains pass fire regulations? How this hotel ever got 3 stars from the Scottish Tourist Board I do not know. I think it deserves another visit. Can you just imagine American tourists paying $200 for a room in this hotel? I asked for a discount for my sister's room and was told 'no' as they could not detect any smell. It was just unfortunate that my sister had paid up front at the time of booking otherwise there was no way we would have stayed here. Visitors to St Andrews would be advised to give the Ardgowan Hotel a wide berth.

The hotel has undergone a further significant upgrading programme using a designer engaged periodically by the Royal Family. This was to complete early March 2008. The contractors have let us down and the scaffolding at the rear has not yet been removed--now scheduled for the end of April. Almost all of our guests have been most understanding and have been complimentary about the level of service. More representative pictures can be seen on our web site.
