My cousin and I stayed at the Duvegan several days ahead of last year's Women's British Open. (Lorena Ochoa and her family were arriving at the hotel as I was checking out)!
During the Women's Open, Judy Rankin spent several minutes during ABC's broadcasts each day praising the Dunvegan as the best place to stay for a golf trip to St. Andrews -- I fully concur!
Sheena was a delight to work with on the arrangements -- very responsive to e-mails and very helpful in answering all my questions about where we should play and which courses to avoid. (Jack and Sheena are both fine golfers).
It was a busy time at the hotel which involved a room change which was handled completely smoothly by the staff. Sheena got us in the Ballot ahead of our arrival from Turnberry (and did her magic getting us two rounds on the Old Course in two days).
Both rooms we stayed in were nicely appointed, with wonderful beds and linens. The bathrooms were updated to modern American standards, both as to size and fixtures.
But the best thing about the Dunvegan is the people -- Sheena and Jack are both wonderful and all of the staff could not have been more friendly. For example, I managed to hurt my elbow trying to extricate my ball from the heather and gorse on the Jubilee Course and Sheena made sure that I had a bucket of ice that evening to reduce the swelling and so I'd be ready to play the next morning.
We ended up taking almost of all our meals at the hotel -- the Full Monty breakfast in the morning (sometimes prepared by Jack himself), a snack between rounds for lunch and then dinner, ales and scotches in the evening after golf. The food was uniformly excellent (and seemed to be priced comparably to the restaurants in town).
The location is perfect, a "nine iron from the first tee" of the Old Course (with several shops on the way for buying more balls and accessories). Parking is tight around the hotel, but generally available within a block or two on the street.
The bar is full at almost all hours with golfers and caddies fresh from their days pursuits out on the links. It's a great place to tell and hear stories and tall tales.
And the Dunvegan is worth seeing if only for all the photos of golfing greats and not so greats that fill every nook and cranny of the public spaces. Sheena will put your picture up too, although I have been remiss in sending her my photo taken with her outside the hotel.
Can't wait to get back to the Dunvegan. I cannot imagine a better homebase for a visit to Fife.
