“Good location for NEC”

Crowne Plaza Hotel Birmingham NEC

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza for one night whilst seeing Take That, and you cannot beat the location. It's a 5 minute walk from the arena and saves queueing for buses, car park etc. Hotel is always clean and smart. Only a couple of quibbles - room safe didn't work and I really don't like the fact that they don't do twin rooms. If there are two of you, you have to get the sofa bed made up. Why don't they do twins like other hotels? Also, there was a function going on in this hotel that night, so the bar was absolutely packed after the concert and we couldn't find anywhere to sit at all, which was a shame. It also meant that breakfast was really busy the next morning, but I think they coped well with this. If you can get breakfast included with your package, do so, because it is an excellent buffet, one of the best I've had. I subsequently stayed at the Hilton for the next NEC concert and it was abysmal. So do yourself a favour and stay here instead!

“Friendly, Helpful Staff”

Crowne Plaza Hotel Birmingham NEC

4 of 5 stars
Devon UK
Dec 5, 2007

My sister and I stayed here for one night as we were seeing Take That at the NEC Arena. (Only a 2 min walk away - which was perfect as it was raining!)

We had a lovely clean, well equipped room with a view over the lake, and as expected for what we'd paid (Booked in advance £150). Facilities include a decent hairdryer, slippers, robes, etc and all the usuals including a bottle opener (just incase you happen to take a bottle of wine...)

The staff were really friendly and helpful and the breakfast was pretty good too.

PS Love the ice machines dotted around the corridors

“Great for visits to NEC or the airport!”

Crowne Plaza Hotel Birmingham NEC

I booked a night at this hotel as part of a package to go to a concert at the NEC. We don't live too far away from Birmingham but the only way we could get tickets to the concert was to book the package - I would definitely book there again in the future though!

Check in was pretty painless and the hotel is only about 15 minutes walk from Birmingham International Station. We came in through the bar area - quite a large bar and first impressions of the hotel. bar and reception area were good.

We were expecting a twin room but we'd actually been allocated a double. However, the hotel had made up the sofa as a second bed. At first I was a bit worried as I thought that might be uncomfortable but I was pleasantly surprised. I had a fantastic night's sleep on it! It wouldn't be any good for a family of four mind as the sofabed wasn't big enough for more than one person in my opinion. Bathroom was lovely and toiletries were very nice indeed. It was possibly one of the nicest rooms I've stayed in to be honest.

Bar prices quite expensive but nothing out of the ordinary for a hotel. They had a good deal on a particular brand of wine so we got a bottle of that instead of buying glasses of wine. Didn't eat there in the evening but the restaurant looked really nice. Breakfast the next morning was delicious. Plenty of fresh fruits, excellent continental choice or the traditional full English - all self service.

We asked if there was a quicker way to walk to the train station as we checked out but were told we could use the complimentary shuttle service instead, given that it was pouring with rain, this was very welcome indeed! It hadn't occurred to me that it would go to the train station for some reason - plenty of room in the shuttle 'bus' if you're a family off to the airport before a holiday! Would definitely recommend staying there - and given the proximity of many busy roads/motorways and the airport, I couldn't hear any noise at all when in the room!

“Good in parts”

Crowne Plaza Hotel Birmingham NEC

1st ever review, let me know how it is:
We stayed at this hotel as we had a conference at the NEC.
Unfortunately upon check-in our priority status was not acknowledged. We were placed in a non smoking room which smelt like the worlds biggest smoker had just spent a year in the room. NOTE: Do not get a non-smoking room on floor 2, go for floor 3 as they truly are non-smoking rooms.
Luckily upon phoning reception they offered me a room change and moved us up to floor 3.
We were given an executive room (which we had booked) which was very clean a bit on the dark side with the placing of the lights but nonetheless nice to stay in.
As we wanted to see the England vs. France semi-final we stayed in and ordered room service (an omelete with cheese and mushroom for me and a Pepper, goats cheese, red onion chutney and homous toasted sandwich (which came without the homous and red onion chutney) which was very nice, just make sure you check you have everything you ordered before signing for the food.
Upon sleeping in the very confortable bed we found that even though the windows are double glazed and we were on the third floor we could still hear the bar downstairs (constant beats are not exactly what you want to hear when you want to go to sleep).
Waking next morning we had in room breakfast which apart from the overcooked scrambled egg was very nice.
Check out was nothing special but having stayed in the hotel overnight the staff were more than happy to let us leave the car in the car park while we were at the conference and provided us use of the courtesy shuttle from the NEC back to the hotel.

Don't get me wrong the hotel was clean and the staff friendly but advertising a priority pass service and then not even acknowledging the fact you have joined makes it a bit worthless.

“Great location for NEC”

Crowne Plaza Hotel Birmingham NEC

3 of 5 stars
Belfast, United Kingdom
Oct 13, 2007

I had stayed in this hotel before when going to a concert at the NEC so when I got tickets again for the NEC I tried to book but the website said there was no availability for the required date. I took a chance and thought I would ring to see if there was a cancellation list and was told that there must be an error with the online booking as there were lots of rooms available and I was able to book by phone.

Arriving at the airport I rang to arrange collection by the courtesy minibus. When I rang and explained what I wanted I was put through to reservations, it rang and rang and after 31/2 minutes I hung up and redialed, again I was put through to reservations and again it rang and rang, again I hung up and redialed and was put through to the concierge, this is who I should have been put through to - so ask for them if you have to ring. Due to security restrictions at the airport you need to take the train from the airport to the train station (about 30 seconds away) and you will be collected from there.

We arrived at 11.00 so our room wasn't ready but we had a cup of quite expensive tea and coffee and our room was ready at 12.30 rather than the normal check in time of 2 so that was quite good.

The room was lovely - not massive but big enough, the bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was nice enough.

We had dinner in the bar, I had the steak baguette which was lovely, my OH had the burger which was very average and a bit bland - not what you expect from a £13.00 burger.

We went to the concert and came back at 11.15, we went to the bar for a couple of drinks, when we went to order we were told that after 11pm all orders had to be charged to the room, this was not ideal as we wanted to pay for the drinks with cash but when you are thirsty and in good spirits after a concert what can you do.

Breakfast was good although some items of hot food needed replenished and this seemed to take quite a while but a nice choice.

Check out was fine and the courtesy mini bus dropped us off at the airport in good time for our flight.

All in all a nice hotel, great location but the food and drink is overpriced but you are really paying for the close proximity to the NEC.
