My husband and I stayed in the Eastnor House for one night during a 2-week visit to the U.K. in June and July. The hotel's website, other reviews, and the relatively high price had led us to expect a modestly elegant hotel. Not so. This place was a complete dump! If we hadn't arrived so late in the day, we probably would have sought alternate accommodations. I seriously considered sleeping in our rental car instead.
In addition to feeling squalid and dingy, the lobby and hallways were crammed with tacky racks of brochures and display cases of chachkes for sale. But this didn't prepare me for the horror to come. Our room, which fronted a major road and was directly across from a gas station, was shabbily-furnished, hot, stuffy, and smelled of mold, mildew and ammonia. We requested a different room, but were told none was available. Opening the nearly-painted-shut windows so we could breathe only worsened the loud roar of traffic noise. This traffic noise continued unabated all night long, and our sleep was further disturbed by drunks returning from late-night partying, wretching and screaming under the window. I hardly slept.
But this wasn't the worst of it. The room was truly, truly disgusting. The bedding looked like it was from the 1970's. It was gray and dingy. There were two saggy pillows, covered in zipped-up shams rather than pillowcases. My husband was so repulsed, he slept on top of the bedding. And the bathroom was completely gross too. If I hadn't felt so itchy and sickened by a night in the bedding, I wouldn't have even taken a shower the next morning. Fortunately, I had flip flops and gingerly used the moldy shower. To add insult to injury, they even had crap for sale (e.g., candy, alcohol) in the room! We awoke at first light, checked out and left before breakfast. Given the filthy conditions, we didn't even want to thing about their food preparation. The Eastnor House was undeniably the grossest hotel I've ever been in!
