“Slightly disappointed”

Mercure Shakespeare Hotel Stratford Upon Avon

Our stay was a Birthday surprise as we had visited the hotel on several occasions and had a beverage in the bar area which we were very impressed with.
Sadly upon arrival we were told our room was not in the main hotel but a small building across the car park, which we had not been advised about on booking.
The windows looked across to a neighbouring restaurant where staff were constantly gathered on a small balcony area taking their breaks. We could hear everyword spoken let alone bottles being discarded.Had we stayed in the main hotel as expected we would not have been subjected to this and our stay would have been much more enjoyable.
My advice to anyone before making a booking is to check your room is within the main hotel and not in the separate building situated in the car park.

The position of The Shakespeare Hotel is second to none, right in the center of lovely Stratford Upon Avon. The only down fall to this fantastic position is the small hotel car park. On arrival I had to leave my car overnight in the NCP car park a fair distance from the hotel. Though vouchers were given out to pay for the parking, then came the problem of carting one's luggage down two long roads back to the hotel. I could have left the luggage at the hotel and then parked my car in the NCP, but by the time I had found the hotel car park, then discovered no parking places, been in and found out the alternatives, come out got to the barrier no exit code, returned to reception to get the code for the barrier, I was more than a little addled and organising my luggage was forgotten!. It would have been better if the hotel, had a map ready with directions to the NCP, offered to unload and store my luggage awaiting my return and given me the exit code with the map. Also, most of the staff were from Europe and their English was slightly compromised in being able to give me clear directions.
Our room was tastefully decorated, slightly on the small size, but comfortable beds, well furnished bathroom and a powerful shower. The ironing board and iron in the cupboard was pleasing to see. The TV signal was very poor and the view from the room was, well there was no view other than scaffold poles and flat roofs. The hotel was very quiet no noise from any other rooms, no banging doors, very peacful.
Breakfast was nice, good choice. A new toasting machine wouldn't go amiss, as only one side of the toast was toasted.
The staff were friendly and efficient, the downstairs decoration was as you would expect, comfy chairs, inglenook fireplaces and pictures of Shakespeare's time.
Overall, I would return to this hotel, even with the inittial car parking problems. You pay for the position and the charm of the building. Don't expect 5 star service and facilities, expect more charm and character, with a historic twist.

“Very impressed with the Shakespeare”

Mercure Shakespeare Hotel Stratford Upon Avon

We have just come back from a weekend stay and it was one of those rare occasions when everything (except the weather!) was great. The hotel is situated in the centre of town, the public rooms have lots of character and there are two very good restaurants (Garrick and Othello) which were reasonably priced. The room was comfortable and clean, light and spacious as was the bathroom and the bed was comfortable (most important!)
On Saturday night we had the Theatre Dinner where we had our starter and main course before the play at the Courtyard Theatre and then our dessert and coffee on our return. It all worked very well. The staff are pleasant and helpful and I would highly recommend the hotel. One small niggle, the hot buffet was not very hot! I think it needs warm plates or more effective warming dishes.

Booked a two night stay in what i was expecting to be a good hotel, and now i can certainly tell you that it is an excellent one. The hotel is in prefect location for exploration of the city, literally next to historical buildings and is possibly one of the most beautiful buildings in the town. Rooms are certainly above average and the hotel itself is very cosy with a distinctly relaxing atmosphere. Top marks.

“Characterful central hotel”

Mercure Shakespeare Hotel Stratford Upon Avon

We liked the tudor style look of this old hotel and were happy with our choice. Room was comfortable and clean, good bathroom and pleasant furnishings. Staff were friendly and helpful and the general ambience of the hotel was welcoming and full of character. Nice fireplace and comfortable antique sofas and chairs near the lobby and bar. Creaking floorboards added to the old charm of the place. We ate in their Garrick restaurant which had good reviews. It was perfectly fine but not outstanding food.
