“Would NEVER Return”

Auberge Manoir Ville-Marie

1 of 5 stars
Albany, NY
Jul 6, 2008

When we initally arrived at the hotel, we realized it wasn't in the most desirable neighborhood but the hotel itself seemed clean and interesting. HOWEVER, The first night we were there we had to walk about 30 minutes to get to the metro - not so easy in a rougher neighborhood with 5 children/6 adults. Then, the fun began. The morning after we arrived we were getting ready to drive to Old Montreal when I realized my car had been burglarized. I lost nearly 20 cds, an auto emergency kit, a first aid kit, a cell phone headset, and more. We were parked in the hotel "lot" right in front of the building. I lost at least $350 worth of personal items. It was very disturbing, especially since we were booked for another night. One of the hotel staff, a older gentleman, shrugged his shoulders when we told him about our car situation - not even an "I'm sorry" or mention of regret. Let me not forget the dead pigeon who remained right in front of the hotel for more than 24 hours. Hopefully they removed the poor bird once we told them it had been there since at least the day before.

This is not a B & B. I agree with a previous guest - more of a hostel. Continental breakfast was very poor and very little variety. Same food presented both mornings. At least 3 of the "public" toilets were not functioning properly. The one in the basement dining room overflowed, the other one would not flush and the third one on the first floor kept running. Very noisy - not at all sound proof. Also, we heard guests arriving at all hours of the night - not at all sound proof.

This was a nightmare. Would neither recommend to my best friend nor my worst enemy. Hope the crack heads enjoyed selling my personal stuff.

“Wonderful staff”

Auberge Manoir Ville-Marie

Feb 28, 2008

I´m coming back to this excellent hotel. It´s the staff that makes it a stay you remeber. Great service, clean rooms and the staff know everything you need to know about Montreal. It´s only about 10-15 min. to downtown with bus/subway. The location and area is not the best, but the hotel is nice.
I´m coming back again another year....

“Sold a B+B, got a hotel.”

We took this room mainly because we booked late and it was the only place available. We were not entirely happy with it. The “comfort” room was dingy. There were blown light bulbs and a hole in the ceiling. The hot tub did sweeten the deal a bit though, but that was a bit dirty too. The neighborhood was in the poorer area, and you have to drive/taxi/bus to downtown which is a huge inconvenience. The furniture didn’t match the carpet or the drapes, and breakfast part of “bed and breakfast” was severely lacking. It was located in the basement and was merely a shabby continental breakfast. We were sold a bed and breakfast and got a hotel.

“Great stay, wonderful people!”

It was like staying home away from home. We made friends when we found this place. We found ourselves in Montreal late at night with no accommodations because of over booking through another place and this wonderful place took us in and made us feel like home.

“Lovely hosts, disappointing location”

English living in France
Jul 24, 2007

We stayed at this hotel in July 2007. There were 5 of us, a family of 4 and the kids grandmother, so we had a suite with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. On the positive side, everything that has been written about the friendliness of the hosts is true - they were extremely friendly and helpful. The basement breakfast room is available for preparing your own (basic) meals if you choose and the breakfast was excellent. I was even able to play the piano during my stay. The rooms/ suite was fine , except for the noise (see below)

On the negative side, I had underestimated how far the hotel was from the centre of Montreal. I found it a pain having to take the metro, especially the return journey with tired children (and the not particularly nice neighbourhood). Also whilst it was easy enough to book a taxi that would take 5 going into town they were not so easy to come by getting back to the hotel. We mostly had to get 2, which obviously cost more. Also trying to get back the Saturday night when the fireworks were on was an absolute nightmare. Finally the road at the front of the hotel was very busy and you could hear traffic all night, even with the windows closed. It was also disappointing that the patio areas were shut for refurbishment whilst we were there, and the cycle paths are not next to the river, there is a freeway in between and industrial docks.

Obviously we would have had to pay more for the same hotel in a more central location. For us with kids it would have been better, especially if you add up the cost of the taxis. If you're happy to trek into town and you want a quiet room, ask for one away from the road.
