“Great Family Vacation”

GR Solaris Cancun

Jun 17, 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

We just returned from a 5 day/4 night vacation at the GR Solaris. We were nervous after reading the reviews. We loved it.
We arrived at 1:00 and were able to go right to the room. We were never asked once about a timeshare presentation. The rooms are very clean. The fridge was always stocked with softdrinks, bottled water, and beer.
The food is good. If you can't find something to eat then you are just really picky. They even have a separate buffet for thekids, with burgers, pizza, etc. We ate at Marco Polo one night. It was also good but we enjoyed the buffets a lot better.
We went to two of the shows. The kids loved them. Definately try and see the Cirque Show.
The entertainment staff goes from morning until night. They are at the pool bar area all day and do lots of activities. There are adult activities which didn't get bad. There is music all day so if you want quiet you will have to go to the adult pool or beach. We did not have a problem getting a chair at the pool like some of the reviews said and we were out about 10-11 everyday.
The pool bar staff is also great. "Hey Henry". You hardly had to wait for a drink. If you want premium brands you do have to ask, otherwise you get the house brand. Drinks definately are not watered down either like some reviews say.
The lobby bar is very loud at night with the entertainment. You cannot have a conversation unless you are right next to the person or you move to an outer table. It dies down around 11:00 though. So if you are looking for a partying atmosphere this is not it. They do offer a shuttle to a different bar outside the resort every night. We were fine though because we had children and went to bed early.
The only bad thing I can say and doesn't have anything to do with the hotel is the beach. It is very narrow, rocky, and rough. The kids couldn't get in.
We loved it here and definately would go back. Everyone is so friendly and works really hard.

“I liked it but....”

GR Solaris Cancun

Jun 16, 2008

First I must say I am not a member of this hotel or any of the "Premier Class at the Solaris" aka "time shares." Alot of vistors at this hotel are but everyone I met was extremely nice. When you get there they will have you sit with a guest rep. who is nice as well, but will go on to get you to take the tour. It took about three "no I am not interested" type comments but eventually he stopped and everything was fine. I truly believe if this type of sales pitch is a big problem for you Cancun itself might not be the place to go. In Cancun everyone tries to sell you everything, and be ready to tip everyone for everything despite what anything says about gratuities. If you know this going in you will enjoy your stay that much more.

Room- I upgraded to an ocean front room at $30 a night. It was pretty good. Typical toilet issues and water pressure issues. The view and the balcony were very nice. I stayed on the third floor in the middle of the resort. They did a good job cleaning and restocking the fridge. I suggest leaving a few dollars and write a note for "4 aguas please", and you will get it each night. The bed was hard but you can sleep on it. The only real thing that bothered me was on my last night I had a little to much sun and wanted to turn in early and rest in my room and I was still up to at least midnight. It gets pretty loud with crying children (not sure why this group felt the need to bring them into the hall) and other normal things. The hallways albeit very nice and clean are very loud.

Pool/Beach- The pools and beach are the best part of the stay. I disagree that the barstaff is unattentive, but I do think that you have to tip. The resort may say not to but honestly these guys do not get paid alot. Every morning when I would start my day I would go to the pool bar and find "William" and give him 10 dollars. I never tipped him again but I bearly ever waited for a drink. Most the games are fun and the entertainment staff is very cool and personable. You do have to get down around 8 or so to get a good chair. I have been to other resorts and it is the same deal, so I do not have a probelm with this. If you do not get up that early you will be able to find a chair but it might not be where you want. The beach is smallish, but is awesome. Be careful of rocks especially on the north side of their beach. It is pretty dangerous but still very nice. I found that because this resort is smaller you will make friends with alot of people at the pool and see them over and over. You will see them at dinner, breakfast, at the bar, etc. I liked this but if you prefer to keep to yourself you might like a larger resort. You still can keep to yourself here but I don't really believe it is that kind of place.

Food- In the early part of the stay I really liked the food. By the last day (5 days) I honestly could not eat it. I am not a picky eater. I also have never gotten sick in Mexcio. I did get sick here on my last day and the next day which was travel. It could have been a lot of things. I did drink a bunch at the pool the day before (no sugary drinks though) but I do that on every vacation and don't get sick (as in actual shooting stomach pains). I think it was a combination of this: the sun, drinking, salt water (ocean), the water in the shower in the room, and the brazilan night themed diner. Really just the later two so take that for what it is worth. I did not really eat or drink for the last 1.5 days of my vacation except for water.

Overall I would still recomend this place with those few warnings. The funny part about this trip versus my last was the it was the complete opposite hotel and length. My last stay was 11 nights at a huge resort, and this was 4 nights at a small resort. I found myself liking the GR Solaris more then the large resort in the beginning, and liking the large one more at the end.

“Hotel nice, food terrible!”

GR Solaris Cancun

We read the reviews here and generally they all came true. We were given the lagoon view with the bait ocean view available after a timeshare presentation. We knew it was coming and it wasn't bad. Of course we turned it down because it was a terrible deal.

The upgraded oceanfront room was very nice with a much nicer bed. The reviews about the hard beds were true for the lagoon view room but this new room had a bed comparable to those fancy upgraded beds in better hotels.

Thank goodness for the adult pool as the two main pools were obnoxious with the staff over trying to keep people interested in their activities. The adult pool was quiet, relaxing, and perfect if you aren't into that kind of circus crowd.

The drinks were always watered down.

The food was the biggest disappointment. Other than breakfast (how can you mess up breakfast?????) all other meals at this hotel were below what you should receive in a 4 start hotel. The pool snack bar looked terrible and had things on there that I didn't even know what they were.

The nightly entertainment consisted of something in the lobby bar, which by the way was the only place the internet worked. It was free of charge, but if you wanted to make any calls good luck. It was so loud that it was impossible to use the computer to make any calls that could be understood.

The staff was very friendly and did what they could with what they had.

The price for 4 nights/5 days was $775 which was an excellent price, but we have decided that it's not worth even that price.
We would not consider going back to this location for any future vacation plans.

Have been to this hotel two years in a row. Hotel staff are all excellent. Rooms are clean and beds are very firm but you quickly become accustomed to them and get a great night of sleep. Food at the buffet can be just mediocre on occasion but can also be excellent. Antonio at the Rosmarinus is incredible and will do anything for you.

“Our First time at the GR”

GR Solaris Cancun

4 of 5 stars
Versailles, Ky

We have traveled to Cancun numerous times, but this was our first stay at the GR. We have stayed at its sister resort just down the beach many times.

The property is newer and well appointed. Our checkin was swift and our room was ready upon arrival around noon. The room was nice and clean with a private balcony. The rooms have a small refrigerator which is stocked daily with bottled water, soft drinks and canned beer.

The property is very clean and well laid out. The pools are in nice shape and well designed. There is plenty of activity around the main pool, but if you want piece and quite, there is the all adult side. THe poolside entertainment was enjoyable and the staff did a very good job.

The restaurants had plenty of variety and the service was excellent. The evening shows were also VERY well done. We really enjoyed the evening entertainment.

The bars did a good job with mixing drinks and all the staff were friendly and helpful.

The beach is unfortnately a problem for many resorts. The erosion has been significant. They are going to have to find a way to anchor the sand and prevent the constant weathering.

The only negatives of this resort, is its compact nature. If there are many children around, it can be annoying. The sister resort is larger and thus more spacious.

Over all we did have a very nice time.
