We stayed Jan. 24 - 27. This hotel has a great wide beach, super soft sand, calm shallow water, and you can walk all the way out in bare feet. Not good for bouncing in the waves or snorkelling.
We arrived around 11:00 am and got our wrist bands for lunch. We confirmed our request for a King size bed and were told the room would be available at 3:00. The process followed by the desk staff was very inefficient; our registration envelope was picked up and put down about 5 times. We had a rental car and opted to just leave our luggage there until the room was ready. Parking is free.
After lunch we went out front and found lounge chairs tables and palm tree shade on the patio behind the beach. The beach lounges were all grabbed early in the morning, but we found them available when we swam in the late afternoon.
At 2:30, I went back and after a few minutes of delay, we were given Room 1005 on the top floor, at the opposite end from the construction, ocean front, great view. Floors 9 & 10 were added later and seemed to be for couples only. The cedar wood entries were attractive, the King bed was comfortable.
Food at the buffet was fair, breakfast was good. A bottle of water was $1 at the lobby store. We bought two and refilled them regularly from the soda/beer dispenser at the far end of the buffet.
We tried both the Italian and Mexican reataurants. Service and food at the Italian were mediocre, and the salad bar was the same quality as the buffet with fewer choices. Service at the Mexican restaurant was excellent, and the food was very good. We didn't mind the brighter lighting though it wasn't romantic.
We really enjoyed the friendly, unpretentious people staying at this hotel. It was a blend of Canadians, Mexicans, cold states like Minnesota and Wisconsin, and a nice sprinkling of Europeans. Folks were there to get away from the cold and enjoy the beach, often with family and friends. The children were well behaved.
One day we took the ferry to Isla Mujeres and rented a golf cart to travel around the island, what fun! We went down to Playa Lancheros and had fresh grilled fish at the local grill founded in 1945, and I went swimming with Monica, a large nurse shark. She was very strong, but not frightening. Our $10 US tip was appreciated, there was no charge.
