“Enjoyed stay, great beach!”

We stayed Jan. 24 - 27. This hotel has a great wide beach, super soft sand, calm shallow water, and you can walk all the way out in bare feet. Not good for bouncing in the waves or snorkelling.

We arrived around 11:00 am and got our wrist bands for lunch. We confirmed our request for a King size bed and were told the room would be available at 3:00. The process followed by the desk staff was very inefficient; our registration envelope was picked up and put down about 5 times. We had a rental car and opted to just leave our luggage there until the room was ready. Parking is free.

After lunch we went out front and found lounge chairs tables and palm tree shade on the patio behind the beach. The beach lounges were all grabbed early in the morning, but we found them available when we swam in the late afternoon.

At 2:30, I went back and after a few minutes of delay, we were given Room 1005 on the top floor, at the opposite end from the construction, ocean front, great view. Floors 9 & 10 were added later and seemed to be for couples only. The cedar wood entries were attractive, the King bed was comfortable.

Food at the buffet was fair, breakfast was good. A bottle of water was $1 at the lobby store. We bought two and refilled them regularly from the soda/beer dispenser at the far end of the buffet.

We tried both the Italian and Mexican reataurants. Service and food at the Italian were mediocre, and the salad bar was the same quality as the buffet with fewer choices. Service at the Mexican restaurant was excellent, and the food was very good. We didn't mind the brighter lighting though it wasn't romantic.

We really enjoyed the friendly, unpretentious people staying at this hotel. It was a blend of Canadians, Mexicans, cold states like Minnesota and Wisconsin, and a nice sprinkling of Europeans. Folks were there to get away from the cold and enjoy the beach, often with family and friends. The children were well behaved.

One day we took the ferry to Isla Mujeres and rented a golf cart to travel around the island, what fun! We went down to Playa Lancheros and had fresh grilled fish at the local grill founded in 1945, and I went swimming with Monica, a large nurse shark. She was very strong, but not frightening. Our $10 US tip was appreciated, there was no charge.

“Had a great time here!”

My husband and I stayed here 27-31 of Jan. We knew that this was not a four star when we booked it. We were just looking for a cheap vacation and a decent place to stay. Upon arrival we were treated very well, given drinks in the lobby and told that we were VIP guests because we booked with Expedia. Then they proceeded to try and get us to move to the Mayan Riviera to another hotel because they were over-booked. Next time I said. We were too tired and did not want to travel any more. They gave us one of the newly renovated rooms on the 9th floor. The room was very nice, although no clock or coffee pot. We had to go and get a key and pay a small fee to use the safe in our room. And for those people who complain that you get your money stolen and do not use your safe then you deserve to get your money taken!!! And it only takes common sense to make sure that your hotel door is properly shut before you walk away! We had asked for a balcony in our room which we didn't get and wanted, but were told that we were given a nicer room and the balcony ones were not renovated yet. So we kept it. They gave us the option to move to a balcony room the next day if we wanted.
The buffet was typical for a mexican hotel. (This is our 5th time to Mexico) The Sarape and Dos Lunas restaurants had excellent food. Just reserve first thing in the morning.
Please note that they are in the process of adding another wing on this hotel and the construction is very noisy in the day around the pool. We just sat farther down on the beach and it was fine. This hotel had a beautiful beach. Not enough beach chairs though, go down about 6 or 7 in the morning and reserve one, or you will not get one. If you are a non-smoker, the lobby gets pretty smoky in the evening, but was fine during the day. They had live entertainment 3 of our 4 nights and was very good.
Overall, this hotel was fine, if you want a 4 or 5 star then do not stay here. But it was a nice 3 star. I would stay here again. I would recommend something nicer if you are honeymooning.

“Beautiful Beach!”

I have to start this review on a good note. The beach was beautiful! The water was crystal clear and the sand was amazingly white. My friends and I were in Cancun to soak up the sun and relax on the beach so the fact that we had some issues with the hotel it self did not ruin our trip. The hotel is in a great location. It is within walking distance of all of the bars, markets and restaurants. The staff is great as well, we spent alot of time at the pool bar and all of the bar tenders were very entertaining. As for the food it was your basic buffet food. The mediteranian restaurant was great though! I suggest going there for lunch and dinner. You have to make reservations early in the morning if you want to get a table. At lunch to get away from the everyday buffet food the mediteranian place served sandwiches and burgers which were awesome! The hotel was very clean and although smoking was allowed everywhere I did not find the smell over whelming. Our hotel room was always cleaned and stocked with towels when we returned to our room each night which was great and the front desk was very good with any requests we had.
We did have some major issues though. First of all do not use flat irons from home in the hotel, the plugs are far too powerful. From the minute that we checked into our room we had issues. We attempted to use the stove top on the first night and found it very un-safe. It electricuted us everytime that we turned it on. Our door broke and was never fixed, so it did not lock during the day, thank god there was a safe. Our toilet didn't work half the time, our blow dryer was broken and never exchanged, there were no alarm clocks or clocks anyhwhere in the hotel which was a hassle, our phone did not work for 2 days, and the fan in our room did not work properly.
I would not recomend this hotel to anyone who plans to spend alot of time inside but if you are going for the beaches and the excursions this was a great, central place to be.

“Unfriendly, Uncaring Staff”

Oasis Viva Beach Resort

Upon arrival at this hotel we were checked in fairly quickly and given a room. When we went to the room we found it was right next to the new wing which was under construction. The room had very small beds and smelled as well. We went right back downstairs to change rooms. As we were travelling with young children we figured they would not get a lot of rest with all thehammering etc. We were at first told by the woman at the front desk that NO construction was going on (obvious error, as there was construction going on the entire time of our stay)and when we persisted we were told that no rooms were available and that we could come back the next day at 11:00am and they could possibly change our room at that time. We told them that we did not want to waste any more of our holiday time trying to possibly secure a quiet, clean room the next day and after again being told there were no more rooms available, after more discussion, a larger room with three beds on the quiet side of the room suddenly became available. This room was much better even though it did not have a balcony.

We were advised by the time share rep at the hotel to get an room safe and be sure to use it. We thankfully took his advice, but we were not confident our belongings were safe in our room.
The doors of the rooms did not close automatically, they would almost shut, but we had pull the door closed and always check that it was actually closed. I saw several rooms every day that the door was not quite closed. People did not realize that it did not fully close behind them.

The staff at this hotel desperately need a customer service course. They did not do a good job, were not friendly and were aside from a couple of bartenders at the pool bar, totally un- caring. Tipping did not help. It did not seem to make any difference whether one tipped or not. Our room was not cleaned on some days until 8:00pm even after repeated requests at the front desk and the customer service desk.

We thought it quite odd that one could sign out a kayak and paddles for free, but had to pay $2.00 for an hour for a boogie board. There was a cost for the room safe but oviously was worth every penny as some people did lose belongings.

Food was o.k. but in the specialty seafood, restaurant especially at lunch it took over two hours to get lunch and there was only a couple of tables at the time.

I asked for a straw for drinks but was told by bar staff that they did not have enough staff to go and pick all the straws up out of the sand etc.

This could be a nice place to holiday if they had better management and some supervisory staff to ensure staff were doing their jobs. Good Management, and customer service were almost non existent in this hotel. We would not stay at this hotel again.

“Beautiful views TERRIBLE service”

Oasis Viva Beach Resort

This hotel has a great location and the views are wonderful. We first got a room that over looked the construction of the new wing of the hotel. The room was small and smelled like a old dirty sauna. We went to the front desk where of course they didn't have any other rooms. We had to get nasty and then a room was magically found. Our new room was much better it didn't have a balcony but the alternative was so much worse. The staff at this hotel with a few exceptions were the lazyest bunch I have ever came across. Getting a cup of coffee in the morning is tuff napkins forks good luck. A couple days our room wasn't cleaned until 8 pm and that was with hourly going to the front desk complaining, as I said before the staff couldn't care less. The buffet was good. The a la carte mexican and italian had great food. dont expect romance at the mexican resturant as they have it lit with 3000 watt light bulbs. The seafood resturant at lunch is ok if you dont mind waiting 2 hours for your food(no joke}. The beach was really pretty and you do get used to the constant construction noise. And you do need to get up early to get a chair on the beach.
