SCENE: My husband & I stayed at Riu Palace Las Americas May 6-12 in Jr. Suite #547. We booked a hotel/air package thru Orbitz for $2K. We booked airport transfers thru USA Transfers for $52 & the Jungle Tour for $55pp through Aqua Tours. We wanted a relaxing vacation in a hot, beautiful setting. We typically do cruises to the Caribbean, but decided to try an All-Inclusive this time around. I'll attempt to touch on topics not typically written about. Please don't hesitate to email me w/ your questions: leighuf at yahoo.com

AIRPORT: what a madhouse!! The airport is small and very, very crowded. After you land, you must exit the plane and hop on a bus to get to the terminal. Then, you must get in a huge customs/immmigration line. The line extended out the door of the terminal and was as long as a line for a Disney ride! Luckily, it moved quickly unlike the luggage crew. TIP #1: Don't check luggage! I didn't, but my husband did. We waited for 40 minutes to get his bag since there is only 1 luggage carrousel and 3 flights that arrived ahead of us. TIP#2: Prebook a transfer to your hotel! Once you exit the building it gets even more stressful and chaotic! Hundreds of people await calling out at you, wanting your business. I saw my name on a sign and was whisked away into a waiting air conditioned van. Our transfer was $52 and we paid 75% on arrival and the rest on our departure day. We didn't have others in our van, just me & my hubby!

HOTEL CHECKIN: Smooth, uneventful. Given room #547, did NOT ask for an upgraded view. But, we got one! The hotel is shaped like a U. Our room was on the top of the U facing the ocean and had a deeper balcony than the standard room. The room is beautifully decorated and comes with basic amenties such as sewing kit, shower cap, soaps, hairdryer, iron, stocked mini frig and liquor dispenser. Yes, the bed is flat as a board but I didn't have trouble sleeping. See photos.

RESTAURANTS: First night you MUST eat at the Buffet. It's higher quality food than a cruise ship buffet, but you'll see similar items each day. To eat at a specialty restaurant, you must go to that restaurant between 5-6pm the day BEFORE and book a reservation. Each restaurant has 2 or more seatings. We were NEVER turned away and we NEVER waited more than 5 minutes in a line.

1st night - JAPANESE- 9pm seating, waited 5 minutes in line. Choice of starter, entree, and dessert. Comes with a sushi appetizer. I dined on chicken soup with spinach, tofu, and shitake, beef strips as my entree, and fried ice cream for dessert. GRADE: C- (worst of all restaurants in food quality/taste and service)

2nd night -BRAZILIAN- 8:45 seating, no wait in line. Preset menu. Comes with an awesome salad/soup buffet, followed by 5 meats( Filet Mignon, Chicken, Mexican beef, Turkey, Pork tenderloin) served with waffle fries, onions and mushrooms, and dessert buffet. The meats comes around on a skewer and the waiter slices of a bite sized piece. Very small portions. GRADE:B- (good on service & salad buffet, but the small meat portions and the flavorlessness brings down the score)

3rd night-STEAKHOUSE-8:45 seating, 2-3 minute wait in line. Salad buffet, choice of entree, dessert buffet. My husband & I both chose the Ribeye. This restaurant is outside and the cool ocean breeze was lovely. A sax player also added to the ambiance. However, the outside atmosphere t negatively affected the salad bar (hot salad- yuck!). The buffet DID include sushi, tho. We found the service great, but the meat very fatty. We didn't sample the dessert buffet because our awesome waiter surprised us with chocolate covered fruits and marshmellows. Yum! GRADE:B

4th night- GOURMET- 6:45 seating, no wait. Choice of starter, entree, and dessert. Comes with a caviar/salmon appetizer. I had watercress soup, filet mignon, and crepes. The dessert was a bit soggy, but the meal and service was excellent! BEST RESTAURANT! GRADE:A
5th night- SPANISH- 9pm seating, no wait. Preset menu, except for Entree. Tapa starter served on a lazy susan included meat pastry, shrimp, fish sticks, and asparagus. I had the beef entree (excellent) and my husband had stuffed chicken (no so good). The desserts also served on lazy susan included choc covered cherries, chocolate almonds, creme brulee. GRADE:A-

WEATHER: Sunny every day, highs in the 90s! You will BAKE in the sun, be sure to load up on the sunscreen. I used 50 spf on my shoulders, face, and other prone to burn areas. I used a tanning sunscreen with a lower spf on my arms and legs. I still burned a little.
SHOWS: Just o-k. Michael Jackson & Grease were the popular ones.

HOTEL LOCATION: Superb! ATM is across from hotel as is an indoor shopping mall. I bought my vanilla, coffee, and cheap T shirts there. Hot spots like Coco Bongo and Carlos & Charlies are within walking distance.

BEACH: Small but adequate. Neighbor hotel Riu Cancun has a larger one and YOU can use it. Be aware, vendors walk up and down the beach calling out to ya. Anything from tablecloths to cuban cigars. TIP#3: Bring a frisbee or football for some beach fun!

MONEY: BRING $1 bills!! Most people DO tip and it's helpful to have small change since you cannot break large US bills at the front desk. You'll want your small pesos for the local bus (stops in front of hotel).

HOUSEKEEPING: You'll never be without bath towels. If you want your room cleaned BEFORE the afternoon, put the sign on your door handle. Otherwise, your room won't be cleaned until mid afternoon. However, they will knock on your door in the afternoon to give you fresh towels and washcloths.

LAUNDRY: I didn't use, but I have the price list if anyone is interested.

ROOM SERVICE: Only for breakfast, must submit order on an order form that hangs on the door the night BEFORE.

DRUGS: If you need anything, check out the pharmacy across the street.
EVERYTHING is over the counter in Mexico- Viagra, pain meds, muscle relaxers, retinol etc etc.

MEXICAN WATER: I used the tap water to brush my teeth and I never got sick. The mini bar has many bottles of water in it, tho, if you're concerned.

CHECKOUT: Quick & easy. Don't loose your safe key or towel keys or you'll be charged $50 AND $20 respectively.

We had a lovely time. The hotel is stunning and the service was top notch. The front desk people were the ONLY workers that had a less than amazing attitude. Our room was perfect as was our entire stay. The food was less than perfect, but we were well fed and came home a couple pounds heavier. Enjoy your stay and email me with any questions.

“Beautiful Wedding at Riu Palace”

Riu Palace Las Americas

My husband and I were married at the Riu Palace Las Americas on April 21, 2006. It was absolutely perfect. The wedding coordinator Josephina was extremely helpful and took care of all the arrangements (photgrapher, band, flowers, +++). We had a sunset ceremony on the beach followed by a "happy hour" type of reception at the Can Bar (near the pool, complete with a Mariachi band) and then dinner at Tio Pepe. It was the most carefree easy wedding we could have ever imagined, and still absolutely beautiful.
In our party there were 31 guests (all ages), and everyone had a great time!
Some of our trip highlights (besides the wedding) include: Party Hopper tour (Coco Bongo's is a definitely must), deep see fishing (we caught a 300 lb shark!) and Xel-Ha.

We would highly recommend the Riu Palace Las Americas for weddings and groups travelling together.

“We had a blast!”

Riu Palace Las Americas

May 12, 2006

My first time to Mexico was such a blast, I can't wait to go back. My two girlfriends and I stayed at the RIU Palace Las Americas the week of 4/29-5/6. I had done extensive research on this hotel through trip advisor so I thought it was only right that I give my own review for future travelers.

What a great place! We had a bit of a rough start, there seemed to be some sort of issue w/ our reservations and we sat in the lobby for a few hours negotiating how our week would go which was a very, very frustrating way to start our trip. If you want my honest opinion and I think my friends would agree, the hotel has a new property in Playa Del Carmen and they seemed to be telling the younger guests that they had overbooked the hotel but was offering them a night at the new property. We were ok w/ this but we decided that we wanted to be compensated for the inconvenience of more travel and not being able to be settled immediately and when we didn't budge, miraculously there was a room for us??

Other than a rocky start, I loved it! I had gone to Jamaica the fall of 05 and this trip kicked Jamaica's butt! The hotel was beautiful, clean, the food was great. I thought I would starve in Jamaica, not the case in Mexico. We mostly ate at the buffet, it was great. We did try the tapas and the brazillan, both ok, but not fabulous. We did however go to a Mexican restaurant at the Dreams property that was to die for and had a marachi band that was a perfect way to start our first night. The beach is in great shape, do the trip to Isla de las mujeres, it's totally worth it, the shopping is cheaper and you get a little more Mexico feel than the resort. Coco Bongo night club was a blast, had way too much to drink there but they had great live shows, it was very Las Vegas. The spa was awesome, we did a package w/ exfoliant, wrap and massage one day that was a good price, I swear my hips were thinner :) and another day I had a massage. This hotel was great, I loved Cancun and can't wait to go back!

“Excellent!”

Riu Palace Las Americas

WOW! Me and my mate stayed here from the 23 rd of April for 2 weeks and it was fantastic. The reception is very glam however in my opinion not too over the top, we had room 337 which had a great view over the quiet pool, beach and of course the amazing sea.

I didnt expect the rooms to be as big as they were, great size also very good size bathroom. The mini bar was never empty and the 4 optics were also put to good use.
Air con worked very well and was much needed at times. The reception bar was excellent, great choices in drinks just ask for what you need. The English at this hotel were very much in minority whilst the good people from America made up the vast majority!
Met some very nice people from the States very chatty and friendly.
The breakfast buffet was great, lets be fair if you cant find something you like, then well what can I say!

Mainly we had lunch in the main buffet, however in the reception at the Brazilian between 1-3.30 pm they serve an amazing Italian, with table service not sure if many people were aware of that. That brings me on to the other restaurants, managed to eat at the steak house and sir anthony?! I think it was called, both excellent. However the situation with booking restaurants for the following evening really does need to be addressed, the queues, the hassle and then not getting a table! There must be a better system for such a high standing hotel, whats the crack with people putting their flip-flops in line then when the restaurant opens for bookings suddenly claiming their place in the queue?! I would say that is my only slight gripe with this hotel and it is only minor, Im sure it could be resolved somehow, after all we are all guests and are entitled to eat at our chosen restaurant, are we not?

The service is fantastic just to mention a few, Abundio, Jerry from reception and David from the pool bar, these guys are ace! A massive Que Pex to you all!

Isla Mujeres is a great day out well worth it, the bar hopper was a good night but Coco Bongo is just not my sort of thing, so busy to the point of being dangerous. Many people do enjoy it so give it a go and see for yourself.

Riu Cancun next door is huge in comparison and is more lively at night, Pacha the loosely termed nightclub is worth a go to carry on drinking but its so dark! only shoe laces and teeth can be seen. The 24 hour sports bar upstairs is a good laugh to end the night.

The beach at the Palace is quite narrow but sunbeds are never a problem no matter what time of the day, what I found strange was that the first week we had beach drinks service all day then it just stopped, kinda strange but no big deal it was just a nice added perk while it lasted. The beach is lovely and the sea is very refreshing, although it has more traders on it than the flea market, a simple no is enough, be warned as I saw if you show interest in the goods as I saw happen they ll be on you like flies round you know what.

The activity pool does get quite busy at an early time so if your into reserving beds its gonna be quite an early start, the pool bar is great, how do some people manage to hold their bladder for that long? the mind boggles. The anamacion team are very nice and the best thing is not pushy at all, if you dont wanna join in their is no pressure. The pool volley ball is very entertaining, the sort in the red bikini is amazing.... tidy as.

If you have chosen this hotel, then congratulations you have made the right choice in all aspects.

“A Beautiful Hotel, Wonderful Service..”

My fiance and I stayed at the Riu Palace Las Americas from May 2nd to May 7th (we are 25 and 27). From check in to check out we recieved the highest level of customer service, and the hotel is absolutly beautiful. We did not have reservations for an ocean front room, when we checked in they upgraded us for no charge, in return we tipped the agent $20. The buffet serves excellent food, they try to change it up from day to day. Take lots of $1 bills, (tips are included in the all inclusive package), but the staff really appreciates it. The hotel does awsome shows in the theatre, and they have lots of funny activities at the pool. Each night the hotel has a different destination on the town, a bus will pick you up at 10:00pm, you get a braclet to enter the club without having to wait in line. While we were here we rented jet ski's and parasailed through scuba scribe, (on location at the Riu), they were awsome!! Fair prices, nice people, good times! They will also give you free snorkle equiptment to use on the beach. The Seahorse resturant across the street has great food, drinks, and great service if you need a change. If your looking for a crazy spring break style party hotel, go next door to the other Riu. This hotel is a happy medium between party and relaxation. By Far the best place to stay in Cancun!
