This was our first vacation outside the United States and I did a lot of research prior to our vacation. Some of the reviews were mixed so this is a review from an average citizen who lives in the midwest.
First of all my husband and I were amazed at the beautiful grounds. They were so well kept and the views are just as you see in the photos. We stayed in a junior suite and loved this area of the hotel. Very easy access to the dining and pool areas.
I was nervous about the food but can't say enough good things about it. I expected the food to be just so so....but it was really good. We tried both the Japanese and Brazilian restaurants and the Japanese was such a fun experience. You do have to get up early to make reservations. I was in line by 7:00 a.m. or shortly after each morning. The brazilian restaurant was good but we had eaten a large lunch and just couldn't eat all the food they brought out. If you are not a meat eater, you might skip the Brazilian. The Don Juan had such a huge selection and different themes each night.
My husband's only complaint about the Riu was that the glasses were not large enough!! He soon learned to ask for larger glasses and his requests were granted!
The people who work at the Riu were some of the kindest, most hardworking people I've seen working in a hotel. Someone is always cleaning no matter where you look. My husband and I both tipped because frankly we believe the people were very deserving.
The bed was hard so I requested the pillow top that I had read about from other reviews. I would suggest this as it made the bed so comfortable. No complaints about the A/C.
Perhaps my only complaint (if I had to come up with one) was there were spots of mold on the walls in our room. I noticed in the downstairs areas the housekeeping attendants were washing down the walls and I'm sure this is due to the mold that grows in a humid climate.
All in all, we had a wonderful experience at the Riu. Take the time to check out souvenirs in the gift shop off the lobby area as well as the venders who set up a couple of times throughout the week. I found the prices were more competitive than those we encountered off the resort...including the flea markets which I would likely skip next time. There is a great Mexican Outlet within walking distance from the resort that is also great for souvenirs.
We arrived home Friday and are already thinking about our next trip to Riu Cancun!
