“Great Vacation Stay”

Riu Cancun

This was our first vacation outside the United States and I did a lot of research prior to our vacation. Some of the reviews were mixed so this is a review from an average citizen who lives in the midwest.

First of all my husband and I were amazed at the beautiful grounds. They were so well kept and the views are just as you see in the photos. We stayed in a junior suite and loved this area of the hotel. Very easy access to the dining and pool areas.

I was nervous about the food but can't say enough good things about it. I expected the food to be just so so....but it was really good. We tried both the Japanese and Brazilian restaurants and the Japanese was such a fun experience. You do have to get up early to make reservations. I was in line by 7:00 a.m. or shortly after each morning. The brazilian restaurant was good but we had eaten a large lunch and just couldn't eat all the food they brought out. If you are not a meat eater, you might skip the Brazilian. The Don Juan had such a huge selection and different themes each night.

My husband's only complaint about the Riu was that the glasses were not large enough!! He soon learned to ask for larger glasses and his requests were granted!

The people who work at the Riu were some of the kindest, most hardworking people I've seen working in a hotel. Someone is always cleaning no matter where you look. My husband and I both tipped because frankly we believe the people were very deserving.

The bed was hard so I requested the pillow top that I had read about from other reviews. I would suggest this as it made the bed so comfortable. No complaints about the A/C.

Perhaps my only complaint (if I had to come up with one) was there were spots of mold on the walls in our room. I noticed in the downstairs areas the housekeeping attendants were washing down the walls and I'm sure this is due to the mold that grows in a humid climate.

All in all, we had a wonderful experience at the Riu. Take the time to check out souvenirs in the gift shop off the lobby area as well as the venders who set up a couple of times throughout the week. I found the prices were more competitive than those we encountered off the resort...including the flea markets which I would likely skip next time. There is a great Mexican Outlet within walking distance from the resort that is also great for souvenirs.

We arrived home Friday and are already thinking about our next trip to Riu Cancun!

“Loved Riu Cancun!”

Don't listen to the negative comments. The only thing they were right about is the beds. Definitely hard beds but honestly, who stays in the room that much but to maybe sleep 3 to 6 hours? If it's going to kill you, do what others have said, ask for the topping for more comfort. My husband and I are not early birds. We never went to the pool, we hung out at the beach which was nice. We always found a seat. The pool was too crowded all the time and I really didn't want to mess with a bunch of drunks anyway. We never made reservations at the restaurants either. The food at the buffet was excellent. The staff in the hotel was excellent. The hotel was kept very nice. I really don't have anything to complain about. I would definitely go back to this hotel. It's worth paying a little more than the Riu Caribe. The Riu Caribe was just fine also but had parts that were exposed to the outside which made the hotel a little muggy. The Riu Cancun didn't have that.

“Fabulous Time!! Highly Recommended”

This was our 3rd trip to cancun, 1st time @ RIU Cancun All Inclusive. We had a wonderful time!! Recommend staying in a junior suite for the x-tra room and space. The view from our room was amazing. I admit the pool area is loud during the day, but activities will get quieter as the afternoon progresses. We had no problem with noise level @ night--or maybe we were just exhausted from playing all day. Keep in mind they close the pools at 7 pm to add the cleaning chemicals to them. Trust me after you see people drink so much alcohol throughout the day and never leave the pool ,you won't mind the pools being sanitized at night.I recommend eating at the Don Juan buffet restraurant. This buffet is HUGE with a variety of foods to suit people from multiple countries. I read about food complaints all the time, but you would have to be a seriously picky eater not to be able to find something you like. The breakfast alone has every breakfast item I can think of ,plus many items I would never dream of eating. The pools are great. My only complaint is the water becomes the temperature of bath water by the end of a really hot day, but remember you're in Mexico, its supposed to be warm!! There's another reason the pool becomes warm, but try not to think about it! I thought the beach was beautiful, water was perfectly calm. The color of the ocean is the same color as pool water--and just as clear. The location was perfect. Recommend taking the bus--cheap and efficient. I cannot imagine not having a great time at this resort. You get a lot of amenities for a great price. Don't listen to the negative remarks about this resort. Feel confident booking a stay at the RIU, you will not regret it!!!

“Riu Cancun...so so ?!!!”

Riu Cancun

Jun 19, 2008
8/21 found this review helpful

Me and my partner stayed at the Riu Cancun from June 4th - 18th got home today. We flew with Thomson which was less than impressive but that has nothing to do with the Riu so back to the point..!!!
ROOMS - are a good size the bathroom is nice and big although it has no sort of ventilation system so it gets very steamy when having a shower. You get 4 fresh towels each day and shampoo and soap.
BEACH - isnt small no matter what people say.the chairs do not go quickly its the umbrella's go by 8am every day so be up early if u want one.we found broken glass on the beach countless amounts of times along with cups and glasses floating in the sea.Lots of seaweed and rocks aswell but this cant be helped as it is expected on a beach, there are always workers cleaning this up though.
FOOD - we only ate in Daun Juan as it had the biggest choice of foods there is something for everyone.its all cooked fresh so no complaints on that front.Dont bother with the brazilian we tried this and it was awful they gave us cold veg and chewy meat we left half way through.
PEOPLE - we met quite alot of lovely people but it is the Americans that let it down for everyone.there soooo loud and rude to everyone in the hotel they have no problem screaming during a wedding in the hotel in the afternoons.they would come in at 4am screaming banging on doors and waking everyone on our floor.
HOTEL GROUNDS - are more than clean there is always someone doin something they are very good.
POOLS - we didnt go into any of the pools on our stay but i will say do not go in the drinking bar as people urinate in it !!!!!!!!!!!

We took our Daughter there for her graduation gift. It was the noisest hotel we've ever stayed. It was also senior week. We were told they did not cater to Spring Breakers/ Grad weekers. We found that not to be true. Drunken teenagers everywhere and at all hours. We got 4 hours sleep in 5 days. They only have 4 elevators for 15 floors. The wait time during the day was up to 10 min.
We will never go back!!
