We stayed at the Moon Palace Sunrise side from 7/6 to 7/16/08. We took our 16 year-old son. This resort is different from any resort we have ever stayed at in the past as it has a "corporate" feel. This is a very large resort and we were conveniently located close to pool and lobby. However, it turned out to be a very noisy location each night until about 2 to 2:30 am with kids running back and forth and fights breaking out. We called the front desk 1 night who said they would send Security to investigate, and the noise quickly stopped.
Activities: I was disappointed with the pool activities which the main activity seemed to be focused on volleyball several times a day. They had dance lessons and water aerobics once in a while. In comparison, the Iberostar Lindo had much better pool activities. There is not much for teenagers to do under age 18 at this resort.
Beach: The beach is the worst I have ever seen. However, we took a bus to the Cancun Palace one day and to the Sun Palace (Adults Only) another day and both have fabulous beaches! However, you can only take the bus at 12 noon or 2 pm. If you go at 12, you have to come back at 4pm and if you go at 2, you have to come back at 6pm (unless you take a taxi). The Cancun Palace has a beautiful beach but is very crowded. The Sun Palace has an even better beach but is for adults only.
Food/Restaurants: The food at this resort is excellent. They have 2 indoor buffets (Sunrise side) that are very good and the outdoor ones by the pool are great for lunch. We liked the idea that you do not need reservations for the ala carte restaurants and you can just show up. Sometimes they told us it would be over an hour wait, and we always got seated within 20 minutes! We especially enjoyed the Japanese, Seafood, Italian by the golf course, and the Brazilian on the Nizuc side. We liked that this resort did not have the "coupon" system limiting you to a certain number of times you can go to an ala carte. You can go as many times as you want during your stay and do not need a reservation.
Lobby Bar: This is where it really gets hopping at night (Sunrise side) and where most people gather to drink and have fun. It seems so much quieter on the Nizuc side but we didn't spend much time there to check it out.
Pools: We were under the impression that the Moon Palace had 1 big amazing pool. However, the Sunrise side has 2 pools each with a swim-up bar. You had to get out of 1 pool to get into the next pool where the activities were. There are 4 to 6 bridges you can walk across or swim under except for 2 bridges that have a concrete wall forcing you out of the pool to get into the other pool. Pools are never crowded since it is so immense.
Walking: You don't have to do a lot of walking if you don't want to since there are golf carts and buses to take you around to the different restaurants or from Sunrise to Nizuc, etc.
Wristbands: They have so many color wristbands at this resort it isn't even funny! Yellow is for regular adults, pink is for honeymooners, green is for Apple vacations, silver is for VIP, purple is for under 18, and there were also blue, black, salmon and I am not sure what those colors represented! If your teenage son/daughter is under the age of 18, they will not be given an adult wristand. They will check the passport to verify. This means they can only go in the Disco from 8 to 10 pm and then they are kicked out and after 10pm at which time it is only for adults 18 and over. There is nothing to do for teenagers at this resort after 10pm unless they make their own fun. Luckily, another family from back home joined us on vacation and my son had their 16 year old son to pal around with. They met other kids and had some fun nights but other nights they were bored. Some teenagers were using yellow Livestrong bracelets to pass as the yellow adult wristbands, but the resort quickly caught on to that tactic as the authentic wristbands have a number on them and they use that number if you go on an excursion or jetski, etc. There is no way to get around it if you are under 18. I feel they should let the kids in the disco until midnight and just not serve alcohol if wearing the purple wristband. 10pm is a bit early for a teenager when on vacation. The resort is very strict about the wristband policy because the drinking age is 18 in Mexico.
We cancelled our included excursion to Tulum because we found out it was an all-day trip and we wouldn't get back to the resort until 6 pm and if we didn't feel well, we would be stuck! My son and his friend went jetskiing twice and on the ATV 4-wheelers which they said were dangerous but they had fun.
Overall, it was a nice vacation but 10 nights were too long at this resort. We enjoyed the food and being with our friends but were disappointed with the lack of activities for teenagers between the ages of 13 through 17. We do not think we would go back to a Palace resort in the future.
