Well, My wife and I wanted to go somewhere special on our third wedding anniversary, so we started looking for places in the Caribbean. We were on a pretty limited budget, but wanted a nice, clean hotel, surrounded by beautiful water and white sand beaches, with great restaurants and friendly people... We found all of that and more in the Casa Magna.
We arrived on a Friday to begin our 7 day stay and had booked the Premium Ocean View room/ Non smoking. We were pleased when we found out that it was on the 5th floor, and was basically overlooking the beach. We couldn't have asked for a better view. The room was very clean and smelled good. And the bedding was pretty soft. The Bathroom looked very clean and the towels smelled clean. When we went to check out the beach, we were still disappointed, but not really that much because we had read all the reviews here saying the beach was lacking all along Hotel Zone. This hotel is one of the ones with a pretty OK beach( JW has NONE!). It does have it's share of rocks, but there are spots where you can wade through and not be on rock. Anyway, the actual beach is there, and you can lay out and dip yourself in to cool off.
The first time we ate at the hotel, we ate at Midakos for Teppan Yaki. I liked it, comparable to Shogun in the US, but my wife thought it was only so-so.
On our last night, we ate at La Capilla the Argentine Steak House. It was by far the best meal we had in Cancun. The Filet was huge and tasted Great! I had Shrimp and Artichoke pasta. They even made my wife some special bernaise sauce just for her. The Service was impeccable, as it was through out the hotel. The prices at the different restaurants are all pretty reasonable even if they are a little pricey. Portions in the restaurants are generous.
There is a slight language barrier with some of the staff you will come in contact with the least such as turn down service, hostesses, housekeepers... But hey...don't be a lazy American... Learn some Spanish phrases and try a little of it... when they see you try, they try right back and you will make it work. As for the general staff, they are all fluent and everyone bent over backwards to help us. Room service was quick, but portions are small and prices are high, so be prepared.
One thing I will mention was that we wished we had spent more time in our room. We did a lot of activities for free every day ( Chichen Itza, Snorkel, Jungle Tour) because we attended a short meeting for another hotel chain in the area. We thought we got suckered at the airport, but it all turned out great. Ended up saving us about $600 we would have spent in tours and activities) Don't hesitate to hear them out before you catch your shuttle or Taxi.
FYI... here is a tip for getting the most out of your stay. 7-11 and OXXO are right across the street. They sell bottled water, soft drinks, snacks etc... for DIRT CHEAP compared to the hotel. So when you get there, Go stock up on some of that stuff. It will save you from eating that $3 Snickers in the mini bar in your room!
