“Awesome Again!”

Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas

May 10, 2008

We recently returned from a 12-day spring break trip with our kids (ages 17, 16, 14 & 10 years old). This was the ninth time that we have stayed at the Omni Cancun with our kids….all six of us love it there!

We spent the majority of our days just kicking back at the beach/pools. We all partook in some of the games and contests, which are always fun. My husband and I really enjoyed just spending much needed quality time with our kids.

The Omni is all inclusive optional, which means you can go all inclusive or just do a room-only plan. I highly recommend going all inclusive, as the prices at the hotel are very expensive if you pay as you go. You can expect to pay $4 for a can of Coke, $9 for a cocktail and $21 for the breakfast buffet….you get the idea. Their all inclusive plan is of high quality and includes all meals, snacks, premium alcohol, 24-hour room service, use of the gym, tennis courts and boogie boards. We all think the food is very good. Going all inclusive really adds to the enjoyment of our vacation. It’s nice not having to be concerned over how everything is adding up, especially with kids in tow. Also, we don’t want to leave the beach, get dressed and hop a bus just to get reasonably priced meals….what a hassle.

The Omni has several restaurants. The Piña Colada is right on the beach and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You just can’t beat eating beach front. There is also an upscale Italian restaurant with gourmet food….don’t pass on the fancy desserts. The La Paloma is the main restaurant. The pool grill is open for lunch. They host a different themed dinner each evening; some with live entertainment. Buffet meals are never the only option, as you can always order from the menu….nice.

The service at the hotel is absolutely excellent. The staff will bend over backwards to please everyone. They are an amazing bunch to put it lightly.

The beach was rocky when we arrived, but it was rock less by the end of our trip. The beach conditions literally change by the day. One day the current is taking sand away from the beach while exposing rocks and the next day it’s bringing sand in, which covers up the rocks for a nice sandy beach. This situation is not unique to the Omni; it happens to all the hotels in Cancun. They have thatched palapas on the beach for shade. The beach waiters will bring you drinks and food all day long…..amazing service. The Omni has the only beachfront Jacuzzi bar in Cancun. It’s great to sit at the Jacuzzi bar while enjoying the beautiful view and tropical cocktails….that is the life.

The Omni has three large pools and a kid’s pool, plus a poolside hot tub. The upper pool is where all the games and contests take place. The other pools are quieter. There are many shaded and non-shaded areas around the pools. Like at the beach, there are waiters that will wait on you all day long while you veg in your lounge chair.

All of the rooms have been recently refurbished. The new pillow top beds are very comfortable. The rooms are well-appointed with all the usual amenities, including irons and ironing boards. The digital room safes are free and large enough to store a laptop.

There is a full service spa, which includes all the usual spa treats. My husband and I had a couple’s massage and we loved every minute of it.

The hotel has a nice gym with newer Cybex equipment. Our two oldest kids and my husband like working out there. They also have two outdoor tennis courts.

The activity staff takes guests to a new night club each evening. Typically, you pay one price for all you can drink, plus you get V.I.P. seating (no waiting in line).

We have done many, many excursions in Cancun and elsewhere over the years. This time we did a zip line tour with Selvatica and it was by far our most favorite. What a blast!!! We did 2 miles of zip lines with 11 platforms. We were told that beginning in November that they’d have 4 miles of lines with 22 platforms…..yowza! We cannot wait to go back and do 4 miles of zip lines! My two daughters and I did one line upside down, which was a hoot to say the least. I felt this tour was an excellent value, which included round trip transportation to/from our hotel, zip lines, cenote swim, bike hike and lunch….all for only $70 U.S. Everything was well organized and the staff was helpful and friendly. We reserved this tour online prior to our trip.

Cancun has an excellent bus system, which runs 24/7 and costs only about .65 cents. The bus stop is right in front of the Omni.

We are travel addicts and have been on close to 70 vacations all over the world, including several cruises. We have never enjoyed a hotel more than the Omni Cancun. They have everything that is important to us…..it’s the best in our opinion.

I hope this helps anyone trying to plan a vacation.

We can’t wait to go back!

“Great, but not perfect”

Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas

We stayed three nights at the Omni after having spent 4 nights at a smaller hotel. This was our second stay at the Omni (the first was in 2005), and although things were not perfect, it was still very enjoyable.

Our reservation was not all inclusive, but we did upgrade at check in for $90 pp. I would recommend taking the all inclusive option if a) you want to drink alcohol, b) do not plan to leave the hotel for meals, or c) do not want to have to worry about a lot of charges at check out. For us, we wanted to have several drinks a day, and didn't feel like exploring out for meals.

The breakfast buffet is pretty good, although one would burn out on it after 4-5 days. We ordered room service for breakfast once, but it was not warm when it came to our room. Our lunches - at the beach and pool restaurants - were nothing to write home about, although the pizza was surprisingly good. We ate one dinner in the main restaurant. I wish I would have known that we could order off the menu instead of eating the buffet, as the buffet options were not my favorites.

We ate dinner at DaVinci's twice, and greatly enjoyed our meals. DaVinci's is a nice place (long slacks & collared shirts for men, similar for women). It is very good, but would be pricey if we were not all inclusive. When we made our reservation, we noted that it was our anniversary, and we received a special dessert and champagne toast.

Our room was very nice, with a king bed and balcony. Not all rooms have balconies, so if this is important to you, request it at check-in. We had a lagoon view, but didn't mind it at all - plus the sunsets were beautiful. We were close to the elevators, and could hear a fair amount of noise from the hallways. The bed was comfortable and soft (by Mexico standards) with a ton of pillows.

My main tip for staying at the Omni (or most of the other large resorts) is to get up early to reserve your chairs by the pool or beach. There are lots of chairs around the pool, but not as many with shade. So unless you want to broil in the sun all day, it pays to stake out a preferred spot before breakfast.

Since our last stay at the Omni, they have added more chairs to the pool area. The chairs around the pool are packed in very tightly - your chair literally touches the one next to you or has a short table hanging over it. We like to have a little more space and privacy, so we spent one day on the beach and one day in a grassy area behind the bar and hair braiding area. That grassy space was home to 3-4 iguanas, who also liked to lay in the sun. They didn't bother us, but they probably wouldn't be everyone's favorite. The staff came around on the beach and put up umbrellas for many people.

The beach is fairly spacious, but the hurricane washed away a lot of their sand since our last visit. As a result, there are several large rocks right at the shoreline, which makes swimming dangerous. We walked up the beach to another beach where there were no rocks, and got in the ocean there. The hot tub bar on the beach is a brilliant invention, and one of my favorite places.

The staff at the hotel is excellent. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and liked to joke around with us. In all, our experience wasn't as great as our first time, but I would definitely stay there again.

“Not bad for the price”

Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas

We booked last second and picked the Omni for one main reason; it was the cheapest on Costco travel. We did not go all inclusive but Costco got us an ocean side room, a free night and $150 credit towards food and beverage. I had to change rooms to get a king bed, which they accomodated. Be clear, this is a family resort and there are kids all over the pool area. If you want quiet, head to the beach. The all inclusive looked like a cruise ship buffet. We took the "omni vacation club" tour and scored $300 in additional credits. That morning we ate in the main restaurant and there were screaming kids everywhere. That reinforced our decision to explore other dining options. We did use our credits in Davinci and it was hilariously bad. They have every part right with the exception of the food. We had much better food at the beach restaurant. You will not swim on just about any Cancun beach due to rocks. Accept it before you get here. I did risk it a couple time, but it's not enjoyable when you are trying not to get hurt. There are some safe beaches, but you have to seek them out. The room was fine, clean and a nice view. For some reason they run a game show thing all day with some guy on a loudspeaker. It's really annoying, but I guess that's what you get with a family resort. The Omni is quite a way down the strip and away from the tourist shopping and bars. If that is your thing, then you might want to stay closer to downtown. Otherwise, it's a longer bus trip. Join the Omni frequent guest - you get free Internet, a paper and free beverages every morning delivered.

The Omni was a very nice resort. It was further down on the strip but with bus fares only being 6 pesos= .60 cents it was not an issue at all for me. The staff was very nice. The room was exactly as promised. The food was okay nothing spectacular but good. They do have one I believe its the "Da Vinci" very good. Pools very nice and clean. The whole hotel was spotless. I would stay there again. Good all-inclusive. Not a huge party hotel which was fine by me. Very nice on the inside.

“Meh!”

Omni Cancun Hotel and Villas

I would have a hard time recommending this place to anyone who actually has a sense of adventure or wishes to actually experience the culture of a foreign country that they are visiting.

The Omni has both its positives and negatives.

First, you'll never experience real Mexico in this or any other Hotel Zone Hotel in Cancun. The hotel, like much of Cancun, is a breding ground for ugly American types who want to travel abroad while not experiencing local custom and culture at all. If dinner at KFC is your thing, then the hotel zone of Cancun may well be your place.

Upon checking in, it was somewhat late in the afternoon. I tucked into the comfy bed for a short pre-dinner nap only to be awakened by hammering. I inquired about the noise at the front desk and was advised that the floor above me was undergoing construction. I asked if a room on another floor was available and they, kind of gruffly, accomodated me noting that the hotel wasn't very full justifying their position by saying that the hammering only took place during the day.

Needless to say, the front desk staff could use some customer service training if they put guests on floors below construction when there are a significant number of empty rooms in the hotel.

The pool on this property is both expansive and beautiful. It's a darn shame that the hotel ruins what could be an otherwise relaxing and classy day at the pool with some idiot constantly babbling on a microphone and blaring bad 80s dance music by the pool all day.

The restaurant staff is helpful and friendly. The menu is extremely limited and designed to direct you to a series of poorly prepared Americanized buffets that are worth of a 70s country club Sunday lunch extravaganza. There is better food to be had elsewhere unless one gets suckered into the all inclusive plan at this resort.

This hotel kind of epitomizes everything that cultured, well educated people hate about Cancun.
