Recently stayed at the Westin for a quick overnight with our 3 children, ages 4, 7 and 8. We had returned from Chichen Itza and needed a days relaxation before flying home.
The Area. Cancun is extremely built up. There are miles and miles of high-rise hotels along the stunningly lovely beach. This is NOT the spot for a low-key holiday. You can eat, shop, arrange tours and more. We visited after the spring break rush, so the crowds weren’t bad, but I can imagine the place turns into a virtual madhouse during peak times.
Check-in. There was confusion over our room reservation, but a lovely man named Gustavo went out of his way to find us the room we needed. It wasn’t ready on the spot, but within an hour we were settled.
Property Description. This hotel boasts a large number of rooms, but the layout is very manageable and easy to walk. The common areas boast of modern décor that turns rather garish as you move through it with tacky colored walls and columns everywhere. It ends up feeling somewhat cheesy as you move away from the hotel’s main lobby area.
Accommodations. The standard room with 2 double beds was absolutely NOT what I was expecting from a Westin. The furnishings were tired, the walls were chipped and marked up, and the tile floor had an un-clean feeling. The bathroom was disgusting! Water stains, a marked up shower door, fingerprints on the mirrors, icky tile, rust marks, and in the night, tiny ants appeared on the vanity top. Yuck! On a positive note, in true Westin style, the bed linens were fine quality and the mattress nice and firm (our preference!).
Food. We had one dinner at the property. Food, albeit expensive, was just fine for a casual, kid-friendly meal. There were some challenges getting all our food to us at the same time, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker. If you are so inclined to leave the resort, I’d highly recommend seeking out alternatives, as there are a gazillion restaurant to choose from in Cancun. If you want to avoid the tourist traps or the same old American chain restaurants, I suggest you head up to El Centro to find some authentic local cuisine.
In summary, I would absolutely never stay at this hotel again. Thank goodness this was not the hotel where we spent the majority of our holiday (we stayed at the Gran Melia which was delightful in comparison).
