“Relax and Enjoy the View at Tentaciones”

Hotel Tentaciones

Hotel Tentaciones is fabulous place to relax and enjoy the view. The hotel is actually a three room villa being operated as a hotel, which it makes it really unique. After 5 p.m. the hotel also operates as a restaurant. We stayed for 10 days in late December/early January. Overall, it was a fantastic stay. The hotel has a few minor glitches, but we would highly recommend it for discerning travelers looking to have a private and relaxing Mexican getaway.

First, a note on the town. We have traveled extensively in Mexico, and Zihuatanejo is one of our favourite places for being authentically Mexican, not over-developed and for having perfect weather (hot and sunny EVERY day with no clouds in the sky). Golfing is located in nearby Ixtapa, which is more touristy and where all the major resorts are located. The golf courses are decent and usually not busy. A highlight is every Sunday night at the Zihua town square, where all the locals come out to watch some entertainment and eat street food.

The Tentaciones property is gorgeous - set high up on a hill, it has a spectacular view. The infinity pool is large and inviting, though it is being encroached on by the new construction (more on that later). There is a gorgeous lily pond as well. Each of the three rooms is large and comfortable, with satellite TV, air conditioning, huge closets, even bigger bathrooms with double sinks and stand-up double showers. There is also wireless internet. The rooms, and the property in general, are kept immaculately clean. The hotel is only a short drive from the centre of Zihuatanejo, and not too far to go to Ixtapa for golf, restaurants, etc. (15 minute drive). We did a lot of walking from the hotel to both the centre of Zihua and to La Ropa beach (a very nice beach). Flip flops/flat shoes are absolutely necessary for walking. In short walking distance from the hotel are three great restaurants: Casa Que Canta (a very upscale hotel), Il Mare and Kau Kan. There are a couple of "clubs" nearby and at night we sometimes heard loud music. There is also some street noise from the road below, some nearby construction and from some loud geckos, but we were undisturbed by any of this noise.

Continental breakfast is included with the stay, which for us was yogurt, fruit and freshly baked pastries. For our taste, the breakfast was underwhelming so we took to ordering eggs, toast, French toast, etc. The huevos rancheros were amazing! We had one dinner at the hotel - this was absolutely spectacular. Even if you don’t stay at Hotel Tentaciones, make sure you visit for dinner. We usually didn't have lunch at the hotel, but it was good when we did. Meals were generally a slower/longer process than we would have liked (very much on "Mexican" time), but were always good quality.

There are two negative things to note. First, there is a large construction project where they are adding two more rooms. As it stands, the construction is unsightly - it is basically a large concrete slab - and detracts from the otherwise amazing infinity pool. They didn't actually do any work while we were there, so there were no noise disturbances. Mostly we were just surprised to see the construction, since there was no warning except what we read on Trip Advisor. I would ask before you book - supposed to be done by summer 2008. Secondly, there are some kinks in the running of this property at a hotel, i.e. not providing towels/offering drinks without us having to ask, etc. Also, with the hotel being run as a restaurant, there is a lack of privacy in the evening, which is not a big deal except that with the hotel being so small, there is no where to "hang out" at night while there are people in the restaurant.

The staff works really hard, and was a pleasure to be around. Salvador, the manager, is a wonderfully helpful and cheerful person - and he will do whatever he can to make your stay more enjoyable.

We spent a great deal of time at the hotel since it was just so beautiful, relaxing and private. We wouldn't hesitate to go back, and are really curious to see it once the construction is completed.

“Tentaciones was amazing!”

The Hotel Tentaciones was a truly amazing experience. I strongly suggest that you eat dinner there at least one night. We had an amazing meal, one of the best I've had in my life.

The pool is fabulous, the views are excellent. One thing to ask about when you talk to Salvador is the construction.

When we visited the property in February 2007, there was no construction. However, when we returned in December 2007, they had decided to add a deck and eventually there will be a small restaurant. It was midly disruptive and the construction obstructed a bit of the view.

All in all, not that big of a deal, we still had an amazing time and spent a lot of time at the hotel.

Tips:
Pay when you get there for the whole stay. Then, open a bar/food tab for the rest of the week. Pay-up and tip generously at the end. All of the personal service is worth a hefty tip, plus, they split it between so many workers.

Bring flats. The hill to get up to the hotel is a killer! You'll burn off the calories from all of those margaritas, though.

Eat your breakfast. The yogurt helps to digest all of the adventurous food you'll try in town. Carolina makes the most amazing coffee and fresh pastries, too!

Try to find Tamales y Atoles Any. It is the most wonderful authentic restaurant in Zihuatanejo. For the most romantic, Il Mare or La Cala.

Enjoy, be open, allow yourself to relax.

“Exotic and unusual hotel experience”

Hotel Tentaciones

5 of 5 stars

Zihau is the cultural alternative to gaudy Ixtapa and Hotel Tentaciones is the exotic alternative to "cookie-cutter" hotel experiences. It sits several hundred feet above the bay and thus has an exceptional view north, west, and south. Their website is a work in progress and still leaves much to be desired, so you may be feeling a little uninformed. We are risk takers and this risk paid off. We went over Thanksgiving week and were the only guests. The staff fixed Thanksgiving dinner and not a turkey in sight. Rather, empanadas, blue chees soup, butterfly shrimp and blackened redfish instead. It is a villa converted into a small hotel - 3 suites and two under construction along with a second infinity pool - it is not disruptive and is quite fun to watch in the tradition of the dying art of hand construction. It should be finished by mid- 2008. The suites are large and attractive, well furnsihed though not extravagant. The bathrooms are exceptionally large and well appointed with a walk in double shower. Zihua is quite tropical so the temperature does not change much from day to night. The rooms have quiet, remote control coolers, but you can also leave your doors and windows open. Satellite TV is provided but don't expect to see your favorite shows and there are only a few channels in English - we seldom turned it on anyway, no need. The hill location makes for nice breezes, though you may hear some noise on occasion from either the road below or one of the other properties. It was never disruptive or a nuisance. Zihua has a reputation for being buggy, but bugs were hard to find anywhere, and the numerous resident Gecko's (small) and equally numerous frogs in the gorgeous lilly ponds on premise keep the ants and no-see-ums well to a minimum. By the way, Geckos and the tropical pond frogs can make an alarming amount of noise vs. their size, and they are particularly fond of midnight choir practice. You will love the infiniti pool and the view of the sunset from your private patio or the pool. The small staff is exceptional - host Salvadore speaks fluent English and the remainder get by with a little Spanish thrown in. You see the same staff everyday and friendships develop quickly. Since Tentaciones is small and new, few cab drivers knew how to find it (we educated several as do other guests so word will eventually get around). There is a cab stand on the road directly below the hotel for trips to town, or you can walk to town on a path that winds along the shoreline - maybe 20 minutes to the Principal or town beach. The hill upon which Tentaciones sits is steep and daunting - good sandals or shoes are helpful on the descent to the road and on to the beach (less than 10 minutes), and the hill will not agree with people with disabilities and perhaps the elderly. Taxis are easy and inexpensive in Zihau so don't let the hill be a barrier to an otherwise exceptional experience. There is no restaurant per se at Tentaciones, but the staff will fix a terrific dinner for you upon request and occasionally the will serve dinner to groups not staying at the hotel - the hotel seems popular with expatriates and second home owners. The dinner at Tentaciones will be served al fresco overlooking the beach and the sunset. We also highly recommend the Il Mare restuarant on the road directly below the hotel. It's Italian and also offers excellent local seafood with an Italian flare. Go at sunset and take your camera. People generally go to Zihau to experience Mexico more as a local than a tourist. While Zihau has no shoratge of touristy stuff, it is much lower profile than Ixtapa - it is actually fun to visit with the vendors. Tentaciones is a terrific and not overly expensive alternative to the condo-hotl experience in Ixtapa and far better than most of the small hotels in Zihau. Although they need to do a little fine tuning (no morning coffee except with the continental breakfast included with the room, and they charge for bottled water so you might want to hit a convenience store) this was a 10 for us and we will be back.

We were guests of Salvador, manager and chef extraordinaire, in March 2007. We had been to Zihua more than a dozen times and had stayed at small hotels on La Ropa for the past eight years. We had stayed at Villa Guadalupe, sister property to Tentaciones, in 2006 and were very pleased. VG was not available for our dates, so we booked into Tentaciones. We were absolutely awe-struck by the accomodations, service and the view. Salvador prepared the most exquisite meals. Salvador and the staff - Carolina, Oscar and Tino made us feel like we were part of their family. All rooms are very private and even with other guests, you never feel crowded or trampled. Everything about Tentaciones is first class and will spoil you forever. Two more suites are under construction for the 2008 season. We will be back in 2008.

Hotel Tentaciones is a great place to go for complete relaxation. It is a boutique bed and breakfast....there are only 4 suites in the enitire place and you can rent one suite or the whole place. It was extremely reasonable on price. You had around the clock service, drinks, food, taxi's. If you do not like complete peace and quite...do not stay here. Otherwise, for a romantic, relaxing, peaceful getaway....this is your place. It was the most amazing view I had ever seen!!
