“Magical Casa Frida”

Casa Frida B&B

5 of 5 stars
North Vancouver BC
Jan 27, 2008

Casa Frida is a magical B&B in the tiny village of Barra de Potosi near Zihuatanejo. It is run by the beautiful Anabella and her gentle husband Francois, and serviced impeccably by their staff Jorge and Maria. The tastefully decorated open air courtyard surrounded by pool, living room and dining room and filled with flowers and Mexican art dedicated to its namesake, is a pleasure to wake up to.
The gourmet dinners prepared by Anabella, upon request, are not to be missed and Francois's interesting conversation and knowledge of Mexican culture is an added bonus. Jorge's delicious breakfasts of fresh fruit plates, warm croissants, excellent coffee were a perfect follow up to our sunrise strolls on the beautiful and seemingly endless sandy beach where pelicans and other birds dive in the warm ocean for fish. We plan to return to this colourful paradise as often as possible.

“What a place....”

Casa Frida B&B

Jan 24, 2008

My wife and I always wanted to find a place in Mexico that offer relaxatio from the daily life and what a place we found.

Casa Frida offers a complete relaxing atmosphere from the sound of the ocean when you are sleeping to the great service and warmth that Anabella and Francois the owners provide, always with the great help from Jorge and Maria theor helpers.
There are several activities that we were lucky to participate such as great cooking lessons and of course the great food that Anabella cooks prior reservation (higly recomended)

If you are looking to get away from the daily stress of life Casa Frida is the place

“Loved Casa Frida”

Casa Frida B&B

In Oct. 2007, my husband and I were privileged to stay at Casa Frida for 2 nights. The owners, Annabelle and Francois are wonderful people who make you feel so welcome in their amazing home. We went after reading reviews and found all the positive reviews to be right.
The village of Barra de Potosi is a small, quiet fishing village, yet unspoiled by mega tourism.
We speak very little Spanish but this was no problem. Francois very graciously called our car rental agent to politely advise them to deliver our car as they had promised... And they did! Annabelle is engaging , warm, gracious and fun. Both have the important quality of sensing if you as a guest want to visit or just need time and space to yourself.
The accomodations are surrounded by a wall, yes, but it is amazing with beautiful vines,a lime tree near the steps by the pool,...you don't even see the beauty that awaits you until you are welcomed through the front door on arrival.
The rooms are not fancy, but clean and comfortable enough. The enclosure made me feel cocooned and cared for by attentive yet unobtrusive hosts and their trustworthy and caring help Jorge and Maria.
They invited us to have a meal of fresh fish and tortillas cooked in the traditional way over an open fire and it was absolutely delicious!! And a great experience to watch as it is being prepared. And to share in eating together with good conversation. Also the continental breakfast was good.Fresh fruit, pastries and coffee. It was plenty for what we needed.
They also helped us by arranging a boat tour of the lagoon. We went in the early morning as recommended for best viewing of birds, and saw so many beautiful birds. It was very peaceful. As we arrived back we saw that the Palapas were getting new palm fronds and it was fascinating to see how it is done. I asked to help split one, as it looked interesting and fun,and the man doing it let me try one.
I would definitely recommend this place. We went not knowing exactly what to expect, and were not disappointed. We hope you will love it as much as we do. The graciousness of the owners and their help really make this place shine.!

I found Casa Frida on http://www.zihuatanejo.net/ when I was searching for places to stay for our Nov vacation to Zihuat. We had planned on staying in Zihuat for our entire trip, but when I found Casa Frida I knew we had to stay there. Casa Frida is decorated in bright vibrant colors and Frida Kahlo's paintings adorn the walls and rooms. I am a huge fan of Frida Kahlo and could not believe my luck to find a place that was dedicated to her. Since Casa Frida is in the town of Barra di Potosi and is about a 30 min drive from Zihuat, we decided to spend 5 days in Zihuat and the last 2.5 days in Barra. When we arrived, we had no idea that Casa Frida was just steps away from the beach and the restaraunts. We let ourselves in, yelled hello and were greeted by Anabella (the B&B owner) with a warm smile, hug and kiss. I knew right away we had made the right choice. After Anabella went over some things with us, she led us up to our bungalow. It was just as it looked on the website but even better!!! After Anabella left our room, my boyfriend and I actually did a happy dance around the room b/c it was already turning out so perfect!!!! I mean what other B&B or hotel do you have a palapa(palm) roof, and a hammock in your room?! We were smiling from ear to ear. We originially thought 2.5 days would be perfect, but we were wrong. After our first day, my boyfriend and I wished we had booked Casa Frida for longer. Anabella, her husband Francois, their helper Gorge, and of course their house dog Frida and their cat, were all so great. During the day we lounged on the beach, ate some of the best darn seafood and homemade tortilla's at the beach restaurants, body surfed the waves, kayaked in the lagoon, went horseback riding, and just had a great time. The people of Zihuat/Barra di Potosi were really what made the trip an awesome experience. I cannot tell you how nice the people are...you just have to see for yourself. If you are looking for an authentic Mexico experience, then go to Barra di Potosi and stay at Casa Frida. It is an experience like no other and you will leave rested and smiling all the way home.

“Thanksgiving Delight”

Casa Frida B&B

We love-love-loved our stay at Casa Frida! Anabella and François offer gracious hospitality. Anabella cooked up a dinner, one from Frida Kahlo's cookbook, that will forever be remembered! We began with Borscht (Trotski's favorite dish) followed by one of Diego's favorite delights and a savory spinach salad. The evening commenced with Jorge's wonderful margaritas and ended with stories in the sala. We enjoyed our time so much that when friends arrived in Zihuatenejo, we all went to Casa Frida for our pre-arranged Thanksgiving feast of pescado a la talla, homemade sopes y salsa de María, ensalada, frutas, and Jorge's margaritas. Anabella hired a wonderful musician from Petatlán to accompany the meal. It is perhaps my #1 most favorite Thanksgiving memory.

Barra de Potosí is a charming Mexican fishing village. We walked miles and miles of beach in the morning, then kayaked through the mangroves before spendng the rest of the day frolicking in the crystal clear surf prior to memorable meals. The village itself is a delight for an after dinner stroll with families out and about, the smell of homemade tortillas and fresh grilled fish wafting in the tropical evening air. Dogs laze about in the dirt streets while children giggle from behind their mother's skirts. This is Mexico of bygone days, a Mexico that is fast changing.

My husband and I have a history of finding hidden Mexico gems, just prior to Fonaturs and development... This is one of those spots that will surely be discovered. We plan to return before the Shangrila is lost to high rise condominiums and time shares.
