Getaway - AKA the Ghetto Way

Hello all,

I am 34, single male and traveled to the Getaway alone. I read a ton of reviews and decided it was worth a try.

I will say that the people I met there made the first week awesome!! We had a blast morning, noon and night, and into the wee hours of the mornings. The second week I spent a lot of time traveling, eating off the resort, surfing in Sayulita, taking tours...

The tour I booked with the reosrt:
Zip Lines - awesome
Pirate cruise - FANTATIC
Swim with the Dolphins - pretty good
Banana Boat ride - fun
ATV's - lots of fun

I did book a fishing trip with the guys on the beach and it was great.

The Bars - Humm, well the one bar by the pools is open all day, the bar in restaurant is only open during meal hours, the main bar area is open after supper until 11pm and then they expect you to go downtown to party. The rum, tequila, vodka is very cheap stuff (labels on the bottle only say what is in it, for example, Vodka says Vodka on the bottle).
Beer, we asked for Corona the first day, the bartender told us we were S.O.L. and served us Sol, haha.

The rooms - There are two types of rooms that were open during our stay, both in the tower - Sea view, and super small rooms. The sea rooms are worth the upgrade, over looking the pools, wonderful sunsets, pretty big, and a patio.
The super small rooms are basic, small, hard to move around in, but you really shouldn't spend too much time in your room anyways, you're in Mexico.

The food - very basic buffet for lunch and suppers. Burgers at lunch are pretty good and Omelette's were awesome in the mornings. The a la Carte was only open Monday and wednesday evenings and was average.

The staff - the room cleaners were great. The front desk staff ok. The guy that books the tours was always great, even if you didn't book though him. The entertainment staff was above average and lots of fun, remember they don't have much to work with. We booked our fishing trip with the guys on the beach and it was fantastic.

Sunwing Tours - This is my third trip with them, they are still average. Our contact was never there BUT she was kool and gave us our briefing on the bus ride to the resort vs. making us get up early the next day.

Overall - You get what you pay for, it is one of the cheaper resorts, and it shows BUT I had a blast, partied hard, made some kewl friends, good memories and I don't think more expensive resorts would of been that much of a party.

** There are incredible sunsets during supper, we were also lucky enough to see the humpbacks breeching during our sunset supper on the resort.

“Dont know what to say”

Lifestyles Getaway Club

Well i honestly dont know where to begin on this one ... my parents and i and a friend went here for a vacation and also part of a birthday thing as all our bdays are in april.
For a place that has allot of potential i dont know if i would recomend it.
There is a large outdoor stage at the pool area that is used only to play loud music during the day at the pool. This stage is in a wonderful location and would make for a great entertainment area if the hotel offered something other than karaoke at the lobby bar where there is room for maybe 40 people to sit. However, the stage is in disrepair also with lights falling off the front and it is in need of paint and other minor repairs. Right beside the stage is an outdoor buffet area that looks like it hasn't been used in quite some time, but could be a very nice setting with a little cleaning and maintaining.

The pool/beach chairs also look as though they have been purchased at that same garage sale. Most were very dirty and a lot were broken.

Food. Its probably ok the first day you get there when you have no idea that it was from the previouse day ot even week. Well, let`s just say the best thing was the omelet station in the morning. You could get fresh cooked eggs and French toast or pancakes. There was a buffet line also, but the food on the buffet never looked edible! That is the first I have ever seen hotdogs chopped up with onions and peppers served on a breakfast buffet. Not sausage, hotdogs. The positive was the fresh fruit. It was pretty good. You could get cold cereal which I suppose in hindsight was a safe option. When we are on vacation, we like to eat much better than at home, so cereal just didn't fit that bill.
Booze: well deffinatly could have been better, ur best bet would probably have to be going down the road and buying a bunch to bring back to the pool or ur room unless you dont mind waterd down liqour.
The rooms where somewhat ok but could use some work ...maybe bigger pillows and softer beds.
This place has so much potential to it the water fountains could be turned on and maybe open the swim up bar.
The staff are very nice and tried there hardest to be somwhat acomodateing. The location of the hotel is in a good area. If your into being up till 5 in the am partying then maybe this is the place for you its deffinatly not a place where ur gonna kick back and relax and have a nice sleep at night.

“A week in Hell at Gettho-way Club”

The worst week that I have actually paid for. The food was horrid. No selection and many days of the same stuff, and one woman spent whole vacation in hospital with food poisoning traced back to the beef they served us. And yes. they water the poor quality booze.. only the beer was full strength and it was the cheapest available. The liquor service was cut back to only in lobby, in courtyard and in buffet hut.. swim-up counter closed. The rooms were very old and in our case... smelly of alot of use and little cleaning. Our toilet kept plugging up with only tissue but no hope of repair. The bed ( kingsize..sort of ) has 2 double bed-frames of different sizes and a mattress with no springs.. a plywood board would be softer. DO NOT STAY IN THIS PLACE.. unless you eat out only and need very little sleep.. noise till 3-4 am .. btw.. only 2 robberies in the week I was there.. crooks hanging in stairwells got one guy... other in elevator.. BEWARE

“Would stay there again”

Lifestyles Getaway Club

Clean, standard hotel. If you're looking for an economical hotel in an ideal location - an easy 15 minute walk to the Malecon and a 2 minute walk to the (Mega Commercial) grocery, banks and shopping, then this hotel might be what you're looking for. Very helpful, efficient, and friendly staff with the service quality of a 4 star hotel made our stay there very positive. Our very spacious room was very clean and comfortable, with fresh bedding provided twice during our 1 week stay, and clean towels daily. At the time of booking, I upgraded to the Deluxe (Oceanview) room and this was $ well spent! Balcony had large patio doors and unubstructed views of the ocean, coastline, hotel property and beach. We took breathtaking sunset photos from our 19th floor balcony, which also provided a quiet and airy ambience no matter the time (much different than the small garden-view rooms that overlooked the noisy evening bar/entertainment/lobby area). Buffet was delicious, with traditional Mexican cuisine and "Canadian" food for the less adventurous. Omlet/French toast lady was an AMAZING cook - Don't miss her station! Buffet opened at 7am and closed at 10pm daily, with a cook from 1pm to 5pm preparing fresh burgers, fries, hotdogs, and nachos with all the fixin's. A la carte Italian restaurant was open 2 nights (by reservation) and we enjoyed eating there for a change. Good food, excellent service. Property was very clean and quiet, but much to our disappointment the beach is NOT suitable for swimming or other water "sports" - water is smelly, polluted, and cold, sand is very coarse. This was the first trip for my husband and I to PV, and our goal was to stay in an "economical" hotel in order to spend our money on shopping and touring, which we did. While we would definitely stay at the Getaway Club again, don't expect a 4 Star resort for a 2.5 Star price! This was the biggest "complaint" that we overheard from some of our fellow hotel guests, who expected a whole lot more of something for nothing! Also, avoid this place like the plague at Spring Break. A fairly large group of "calm" college kids arrived the day before we left, but our "quiet, adults only" hotel quickly turned into a fraternity house - even before the students were checked into their rooms (their luggage was still in the lobby awaiting the rooms to be prepared)! Within several hours of the students arriving, the cleaning staff was unable to keep up with these classless slobs, so unless you enjoy having drunken, puking, stoned, noisy, and reckless college students for neighbors for 7 to 10 days of your well-deserved vacation, you would want to find a more "upscale" hotel that would be out of the "sttudent" price range from the last week of Feb until mid April. Another (larger) group of students arrived just as we were leaving for the airport and we couldn't be happier to get out of there, only for that reason. In future, we would DEFINITELY stay here again, but NEVER EVER even close to the time around Spring Break!

“Better than expected”

Lifestyles Getaway Club

4 of 5 stars
Calgary, Canada

4/5 found this review helpful

I went to Getaway Club 2 weeks ago with my wife, and our 2 friends (2 couples all together). With all the stuff written about the Getaway Club, we were not expecting much. However, what we found out, is that it seems WAY too many people are expecting a 4 star resort for a 2.5 star resort price.

When we are looking for a 2.5 star resort to stay in, it is not because we want to lay in our rooms all day and admire the brand new stylings of the painted doors and the drapery. We want to get out and do stuff. That is what the Getaway Club provides. A place to lay your head in between your adventures in one of the friendliest and most enjoyable cities in Mexico. What they also provide, at least on par with the 4.5 star Sheraton next door, is a level of service far beyond what we expected for the price we paid. It is a relatively small resort with a staff that works 6-7 days per week, so you get to know many of the staff members, who work tirelessly on a wage that should be illegal, to make your vacation the best it can be.

Leno, the man working as the concierge/tour information booth, had any and all information we asked for, including calling his wife for help with a medication that my friend needed to take for his ears. He also provided us with restaurant reservations and suggestions for any mood/occasion we had thrown at him. His efforts were well past his job description!

Aldo, the "host of the festivities", and the rest of the entertainment group work 7 days a week at what seems like 18-20 hours a day, to help create the party mood that this resort is known for. Although we weren't there for the extent of carnage and debauchery that some go to Mexico for, we still had fun with the portions of the "show" that we chose, and I am amazed at the fact that they don't all collapse from exhaustion.

The rooms: As I said, we were not there to hang out in the rooms. Some reviews on this site show pictures of rusted or deteriorated door handles/hinges, and this is true. However, looking past this superficial issue, the rooms were nice, clean, needed updating but it was a place to rest your head without worrying about 1. cleanliness (sheets/towels were changed daily, etc) and 2. Security(assuming you follow simple elementary practices such as renting ...and more importantly...using the safe they offer, and locking your door and patio door.)

Safety/Security: there was no safety concern at all when we were there. Nobody was suspicious at all in the resort, including security guards (which has been mentioned in reviews), and security measures were sufficient. Use the safe, as I said. It is large enough to fit all wallets, passports, pocket cameras and any mp3 players you might have, and more. Why take the chance of having to complain about it after the fact. Just be smart.

The food: as mentioned before, yes they use weiners in a few things. But not so many that it isn't avoidable. Besides that fact, and the fact that I thought the food should be hotter (almost every hot dish was luke warm), the food was decent quality for the type of resort, and definitely edible, even tasty! We didn't want to eat it ALL week, but it was very nice to have it available. Do not bother with the a la carte restaurant though. The buffet food is actually better, if you can believe it! And the omelette lady, as mentioned, was the highlight of all food there. she is amazing!

Overall, I highly recommend this place for anyone under the age of 35, or anyone that does not have a problem with more of a party atmosphere that wants to go on a budget. The excellent service of of the staff far outdoes any shortcomings this place has, and its amazing location, among the 4 and 5 star resorts, with its own beach, and its proximity to downtown, makes it THE perfect resort for anyone looking for a vacation without going too far into debt!
