We own a one week master suite with the Mayan Palace and after hassling for a couple of years with RCI, we decided to stick with the Mayan Group for our trips. We love Mexico which is why we bought in the first place.
Last year was our first time in PV and we stayed at the Mayan Marina. Every review you've read about it is true.. there are some definite pluses... closer to town, a quick bus ride to anywhere, the Marina dining.. the best.. and the resort itself is much quieter than the Mayan Nuevo Vallarta. We were totally unimpressed with the food... but with the Marina right next door, we loved each minute of our week. Definitely not a place to take small kids or teens as there is simply not enough to keep them entertained. and because it is older, the rooms simply lack all the advantage of Nuevo Vallarta... but it will always be our first choice for the positive reasons above.
This year, we stayed at Nuevo... we were worried that we would be far out of town (we were).. but the taxis are price regulated and there was never a lag time in waiting for one. The food at this resort is wonderful. (our biggest worry after staying at the Marina).. Great selection if you avoid the nightly buffet events (not our style)... Fabulous selection of sea food at one restaurant (name escapes me) on the beach.. great sunsets and the prices were what you would expect. We also spent one evening in the Rogue Bar with a wonderful cheese platter and salads with wine... The Green Break restaurant on the golf course is fabulous... try their rib eye tacos... the appetizer side of guacamole is HUGE.. very generous portions. but avoid the hamburgers... big, but not tasty according to our husbands.
Our 2 bedroom suite was lovely... well appointed in the kitchen and living room.. very comfortable for 2 traveling couples (yes, we are in our 60's)... maid service was excellent and the general attitude of the staff is first rate. We had an ocean view room that was above the lobby bar.. Nightly entertainment floated through our patio doors each night.. some good, some not, but it was fun to go to sleep being seranaded by a great trumpet player.
The pool area is splendid... we avoided the entertainment area which was loaded with teenagers.. they have wonderful activities for those of you who want to engage in it... Yoga on the beach, beach volleyball, etc... we were content to enjoy the sun, the view and our books.
We will return again and again... we could care less about what a lobby looks like.. are more interested in the overall atmosphere and quality of service at any resort we stay in. And for the record, the 4 of us have spent more time in hotels in our careers than in our own homes...
