OK, this will be long so I apologize in advance. But, it will be filled with lots of good info!
We were in PVR from May 13th - 21st. The first 4 nights we were booked at the Melia Vallarta in the Marina area of Puerto Vallarta. The second 4 nights we were booked in the Riu Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta.
PVR airport is a breeze, no issues whatsoever - this is a very quiet, well run airport. We didn't even get to push the stop light thing-y like in Cancun, I was kind of looking forward to that. We had no problems with the time share hawkers because we had prearranged transportation but they were out in force (more on that later), just be prepared. Say, "no thank you", keep walking, and don't make eye contact. You'll be fine. No worries.
We arrived at the Melia and it is really pretty from a distance. The hotel check in people were not overly friendly but you need to keep in mind that an American's idea of friendly is not that same as people from other countries/cultures.
Only major issue with check in was that I forgot my confirmation print out. This was my mistake, I was wrong. Now, if I say I don't have it (yet I am in your computer and you acknowledge I am in your computer and you acknowledge that I am pre-paid), and I say there is no way for me to get it, I don't have it. I am not just saying this and will then magically pull it out of my purse and say "gotcha". I don't have it. The check in person kept telling me she needed it and I kept saying I don't have it. Finally a manager came over and all was OK.
Rooms at the Melia are horrible. Worse than horrible. Like 10+ years beyond horrible. We spoke with some of the hotel workers and the hotel is leased out (someone I guess has the franchise?) and the people leasing out the hotel have done nothing in upkeep to the hotel. They are running it into the ground. As it was described to us, "this Melia is the ugly duckling of Melia's".
The first room (2309) we had the entire sinks was one big crack. The bathroom are the best part of the entire room but the under mount sink was nothing but a huge crack. The headboard for the bed is actually a bunch of 1 x 4's nailed to the wall and painted brown. Very classy. The bed was fine comfort-wise, no issues. No blankets. No clock and no radio. View over looking the mosquito breeding area. We were told this room should have been out of commission but somehow we were assigned this room.
We got moved to a different room (3316) the next day. Great view (we were on the end, closest to the water. A/C didn't work; no hot water, TV fuzzy, much nicer room. We had a blanket but still no clock nor radio. We got the hot water fixed, A/C was never fixed but it was tolerable. The last night the toilet stopped working. We would have to use a cup the fill the tank with water from the sink in order for it to flush.
The food at the Melia was AWESOME! Really, really good food. The people working in the restaurants were top notch. We ate at Vitales and were duly impressed. The Caesar salad was by the far the best I have ever had, anywhere. We ate twice at the a la carte restaurant at the bottom of the stairs next to Vitales (sorry, can't remember the name) and it was wonderful. The buffet was very good. The lunch buffet was one of the best I have ever had. They have different station and the food is made fresh for you. The stir fry was amazing. The breakfast and dinner buffets are in the main restaurant, bottom of the steps on the left. Breakfast was always yummy and dinner was quite good as well. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever with the food. Probably the best A/I food I have ever had.
The kids program at the Melia is top notch. The kids were always doing stuff and looked to be having a blast. We don't have kids but were overly impressed with the staff of the kids club. You would see kids with their faces painted, walking around in costumes, having Pirate Parties, etc. Very, very well run program. Probably the most touching thing for me was on one of the nights the kids club staff got together and nominated a picture drawn during the days activities to be auctioned off that night during the show. A nice gentleman (bless him!) paid $35 for a painting drawn but a complete strangers little kid with the money being donated to Save the Children. Stuff like that really stands out.
The shows at the Melia were very professional. The comedy show was the best. It was done by a mime but was one of the amusing things I have seen. The 80's show was great, too. Very professional and well put on shows. Very, very impressed.
The beach at the Melia is a joke. Not really a beach at all. The pool needs repairs. When tiles fall off, instead of replacing with tiles, putty is stuffed into the holes. Drinks were very good. Ice cream is at the snack bar (the food at the snack bar is pub fare, not very good but kids like it). **hint** the Melia has Coke products (for some people (like me) this is important!
The Melia is pretty close to downtown Puerto Vallarta. It is across the street from the Marina. I forgot the price of the cab ride downtown but once we figured out the busses, we took them instead of cabs. Another hint...you can cut through the marina and take off a huge chunk of walking distance by not having to go around the huge abandoned/half finished cement shopping mall.
