We stayed at the Holiday Inn at the end of a five day trip to PV and Yelapa. Like many reviewers we found the HI flawed, but adequate.
Prepare to travel back in time to 1980 when this HI was a true destination. Little to nothing has been updated since. It's clean, but the rooms are definitely showing wear and tear. Our room wasn't in the state of disrepair that others have reported (and have photos of) but it needs remodeled. The sliding glass door to the balcony could not be locked and on close inspection it appears to have been forced open and damaged. Thank God for the in room safe, which was a nice feature. The beds were very hard, which I suppose beats too soft and lumpy. The tub requires a big step up into, then the shower head is at about 5'5". (I'm 6'1" and had to duck) The shower floor was also quite slippery, which could account for the gripper pad on the side of the tub that reminded me of visiting my grandma's house.
The bar in the lobby is below a sign proclaiming it to be "A Great Place To Meet Friends!" - as long as meeting your friends takes place after 6pm. At 5:45pm my wife went in search of food and drink and was met with a stern "We open at 6" from the bartender. In all fairness that was perhaps the only inhospitable comment made during our entire trip. I'm just puzzled why this large, centrally located bar was closed until the evening hours.
The pool is one of the most attractive features of the HI. We did not have time to get in, but it seems to be quite popular. At some point during the morning the sound system gets cranked up and organized water aerobics blares across the courtyard. After that a DJ plays music that seems quite appropriate - lots of Top 40 from 10-20 years ago.
Previous reviews of the buffet are accurate; it sucks. Moreover, there were pigeons flying around (can you say unsanitary?). We ordered breakfast and lunch off the menu. The food was the culinary equivalent of the hotel - adequate and somewhat bland.
The property is located halfway between the airport and Old Town, which means constant taxi rides to go anywhere. We didn't mind spending the night, but spending a week at the HI would be out of the question for us. There are too many smaller, nicer, and equally priced options in PV.
