But ended very well. Although this was a vacation, I do need to use my laptop about an hour a day. I was told before I booked the trip that the hotel had high speed internet in the rooms. Well, they do have a phone hook-up that doesn't work (which means that my laptop was a waste to bring) but the manager does allow guests to use his computer.
The hotel is beautiful but the beach is not too good. No white sand here and directly next door to the hotel is a huge public beach ... it was awful. They had 100's (yes 100's) of portable "cabanas" set up and it was filled with locals. To take a stroll down the beach was useless, we literally had to step over people and dodge kids throwing balls, sand, etc. Not to mention the local venders selling tacos and meats (and following your every move.) We didn't know the kids were still out of school in Mexico. If you come at this time, plan on staying at the pool, it'll be fine.
The first few days were very hectic at the pool; the weekends fill up with local people, their children and nannies. There are about 7 very nice cabanas and even the mornings I got up at 5am to reserve one, they were all taken! That was a shame. The pool service was very good; they would bring out towels and were always ready to take a drink order.
Only 2 places to eat and one is only for lunch (until 5pm) service is very, very slow. Even empty, it took a minimum of 2 1/2 hours to eat. We waited about 30 minutes just for a check. The food was good.
The rooms are nice, the baths are big, but the balcony is very small and there is no room for any chairs so you can't sit out there and relax. One of the neatest things for us to do is to sit outside on the balcony, watch the ocean and have a drink. No way was this possible at this place. We ended up switching to a Governors Suite which had a large balcony, lounge chairs and a pool. It was a bigger room too and well worth the price. We didn't need the extra room so basically we paid for a balcony that we could use.
The hotel is very clean and we did enjoy our stay. We would stay there again but would be sure to do so in the off season.
The staff is very friendly. Many upper-end Mexican families come for the weekend with their wild, non-disiplined children. All of this is pretty typical of Mexico though.
