We stayed at the Hotel L'Esplanade in June of 2008, and it was everything we read about plus some! After a long flight from the West Coast to St. Martin, we were ready to either 1. drink lots of alcohol or 2. go swimming! As soon as we checked into the hotel, we were given a tour by the manager. We had a nice welcome basket waiting for us. The room we stayed in (delux studio) had a beautiful patio with a nice view of Grand Case, as well as all the immenties we would need for our weeks vacation. Everything in the room was super clean and well taken care of! We could not have been more pleased with the accomodation. My fiances family joined us on this trip and rented the villa up the hill (privately owned, but leased through the hotel). We went up to check it out and it was soo amazing! The villa had it's own infinity pool, a huge kitchen and living area, as well as two beautifully decorated bedrooms.
If you have a large family and would like to take a vacation, this is definitely the place. While my fiance and I enjoyed our own space in the hotel, we could still visit with his family up at the villa (2 minute walk uphill).
We really enjoyed the restaurant row that is so close to the hotel. There are fabulous places to eat, some are more pricier than others. Here are a list of ones we enjoyed!
- Blue Martini - great selection of thin crust pizzas for reasonable price
- L'Escapade - french cuisine with a nice atmosphere (more pricey) but the portions are perfect.
- Spiga - little italian place right near the hotel. Great atomosphere and tasty fusion dishes.
The hotel offers it's suggestions of nice restaurants in the surrounding areas, and the best one by far was Le Sigla (sp?). It was just outside of Marigot, situated right on the beach. The waitors were absolutely hilarious and the service was impeccable! A nice selection of french cuisine, but offering North American fares as well.
As far as beaches go - Grand Case isn't much to talk about. It's a small strip of beach with not a ton of walking distance, or many beach activities. If you are looking for some real fun, check out Orient Beach, but be prepared for the Clothing Optional terms! Many people take advantage of this, but it's pretty entertaining and you get used to it after a little while! Another beach we enjoyed was Dawn Beach (by the Westin). The waves are a little choppier, but that provided more fun for us! They say there is good snorkeling there, but really, it's all dead coral so don't be fooled!!
All in all, St. Martin is beautiful and we would love to stay at L'Esplanade again!
