I'm just so excited to try to get this review right. I've stayed there 3 times over several years, and just booked again. I've been alone, and I've been with others. Just as great either way. I don't know how many resort hotels I've stayed at in my life -- but it's a lot. I can't really pick them out, I dont recall them in conversations at a bar. But THIS place, man o man - it is really something, sitting there directly on the beach in its own little rain forest setting. I read once in a magazine that at Whistling Bird the trees and plants seem almost to have swallowed up the cottages - and that's true.
I can always quickly recall this gem of a place when talking to a friend, and if I were to make a list of places I just MUST return to --- it's really only Whistling BIrd. There is so much special about it. For one thing its private, the cottages are unique design. Saying the staff is great is sort of generic - what has happened here is these staff have been picked, trained, nurtured, and somehow the vibes of the place puts you in a contact not normally felt. Saying great staff just does not make it - this is a special place for guests. You just don't find such a place where the mix of staff and guest is so much in interplay with so much good food, good comfort, good drink, even the music is hand-picked. The painter and varnish man is just as elemental as the Chef or office lady or owner. This place sings harmony. Cottages are fantastic ad well thought out, cared for and upkeep very, very good. There are so many things (decorations) to notice both inside and out. It breathes Jamaica literally. I have met several past guests of all types, and they all say the same thing - "Best Vacation I ever had." The Bird has sort of a entreprenuerial sort of guest mix, and the people who go there have been around - they have PICKED the place, not sent there by some website or agent. If its food, they are among the best. If its cottages - no one has this sort of modern Jamaican style, everything modern, but everything a rustic design influence. If its the setting - it certainly captures the heart of Negril in a non-commercial way. The beach is so HUGE there, they built way back and planted trees heavily --- you cant even see into it from the beach. That's good cause it makes the view looking out to the sea so superb
AC, TV, WiFi DSL, VOIP, big cottages, small cottages, dining and bar - it's all there. Setting is large enough for you to hide in when you want solitude, don't think I've ever seen every part of the grounds ( I have seen a great large wedding take place there, and family reunion once, too). This place is well run, and always evolving in a neat , conscious way.
I can't exactly put my finger on what it is there at The Bird, but Im always wanting to go back. I just SEE myself there. It is one unique, laid back, relaxing, invigorating scene. It's central to everything, no waiting in line, and they can put as much or as little as you want into a custom package - even can make it all inclusive. It's my Place in The Sun - I'd advise you to make it yours.
