My husband and I stayed at Coco LaPalm in early May(we are upper 20's early 30's..FYI). It was my first time to Negril and my husband's second. We had arranged our transportation from Montego Bay to Negril through the hotel. The driver's name was Prince and was a great driver! There are definitely some crazy drivers in Jamaica and he was a great defensive driver. Upon arrival check in was quick and easy. Our room was clean but no frills as expected. Maid service was great everyday! I will say that if you are accustomed to staying at 4 or 5 star hotels (Four Seasons type hotels), this may not be what you're looking for. For my husband and I it was just fine, but we're not overly picky and usually don't spend much time in our hotel rooms.
The hotel grounds were very pretty. Very pretty lush vegetation. We did not utlize the pools, but they seemed to be nice. The best thing about Coco LaPalm is their beach! We walked up and down the 7 mile beach and in that area Coco seemed to have the largest nicest plot on the beach. Our favorite thing to do was to float on a raft in the beautiful, warm, turquise water in the mornings...SO RELAXING! The water is extremely calm in the mornings and in the afternoons it's still very calm. There were security guards all up and down the beach, which was comforting. The only thing that drove me nuts about our stay was the CONSTANT and I mean CONSTANT beach "vendors" approaching you to see if you wanted drugs, cigarettes, cigars, fruit, snorkel trips, parasailing, jet ski rides, etc. The first day it didn't really phase me b/c I would politely tell them no thanks, but by the 3rd day I had had enough! We were there for 4 days and I'd say you get approached 10-15 times a day if you spend a full day on the beach. If you have absolutely no interest in any of the items I mentioned above do not tell them "maybe tomorrow", b/c they will find you tomorrow and hassle you again. Even if you don't say maybe tomorrow they'll still more than likely hassle you again tomorrow.
If you're looking for Red Stripe, the bar next to Coco (For Real bar) is the place to get them! They are 100J's which is about $1.50. Great little bar to check out also down the beach is the Boat Bar. Dave and Baby Face are great! Extremely nice guys and they have a live band on Friday afternoons and evenings that is great!
We only ate breakfast at Coco and it was really good. I definitely recommend the banana pancakes! Coffee was pretty good as well. Didn't eat any other meals there, so can't speak to their lunch or dinner menus. A recommendation for restaurants would include Kuyaba, Norma's, Best in the West (jerk chicken stand across the street from Coco), Selina's(Sunday brunch). Everyone raves about Rockhouse, and my meal there was not as good as I had hoped. Beautiful restaurant and spectacular views, but my particular meal was not good, though my husband said his steak was pretty good.
All in all we enjoyed our trip to Jamaica and the Coco LaPalm suited us just fine. If you are looking for a non-all inclusive hotel in Negril this was a great choice.
