This is long, but I benefited from these kinds of reviews when making my decision to choose CSA, so I hope to do the same for other future travelers.
Couples Lounge/Shuttle
As soon as we got through customs (about an hour for immigration, 5 minutes for customs... warm in there, but nothing worth complaining about), we were directed to the Couples lounge. We enjoyed a Red Stripe while our bags were taken care of. Everyone was very friendly. We only had to wait about 15 minutes to be ushered outside to our shuttle. The driver was a trip; he had us cracking up. The drive wasn’t bad; I passed out, but my husband enjoyed the scenery. If you’re not used to driving in island nations, it may be a little scary. Narrow roads, fast, left-side-of-the-road driving… We did make a quick stop for food and bathrooms, which I could have done without, but it only added on 15-20 minutes.
Check In
Smooth! We were greeted with cold towels and champagne, and the check-in process was quick. They gave us a packet with resort information (and information for our wedding and appointment with the coordinator). Unfortunately, just as we checked in, the skies opened up and it poured. We hung out in the lobby for longer than we would have without the rain (which gave us time to make some reservations with the concierge - do this as soon as you arrive!!!), then decided just to go for it. They escorted us to our room with our luggage (which we didn’t have to touch until we were ready to unzip in our rooms!).
The Room: Beachfront Verandah
We fell in love the moment we opened the door. It was lovely! Simply decorated, spacious, clean… our only complaint was that one of the verandah doors didn’t open all the way. No worries, though. We were happy with the mini bar service (if you have requests, just leave a note! I fell in love with Ting and asked for extra to be stocked; the next day it was!), the daily maid service, and our nightly turn-down. At turn-down, they left a little card on our pillow with a Jamaican saying on it. That was one of my favorite little touches of the whole trip!
The Food
I think we gained about 20 pounds each! Let’s go through each place:
Patois Patio: Our favorite all around, especially for dinner! The food is sooooo yummy – my only complaint is that some of the food is a bit small in portion. We loved the atmosphere & food here, and the service was great! The seared beef dinner appetizer is amazing – order two!
Seagrapes Café: This was our favorite place for lunch. The fare was a bit lighter, the tables were right on the beach, and service was pretty quick. The zucchini patties and the sweet potato chips were my favorites here! Their veggie burgers are amazing, too!!
The Palms: Breakfast is the BOMB! Have them put coconut in your pancake special of the day – tasty! And the fried plantains! We seated ourselves every day. Lunch was alright – good selection! The only dinner we had there was the international buffet (delicious - but heads up, they seat 4-tops and higher, so if you are a twosome, you will get seated with another twosome - it was nice to have dinner company, but took us a little off guard) – they had tables all around the pool with everything from sushi to made-to-order pasta! Save room for dessert!!!
Cabana Grill: Good fast food any time of day! We loved the self-serve nachos and the Jamaican beef & chicken patties! The spring rolls hit the spot for a nighttime snack, too!
Feathers: Pretty neat; VERY different feel from the rest of the resort. Do all five courses, as servings are small, typical of gourmet dining. It was good, but nothing was to die for.
Lemongrass: We found this to be the most overrated – the food was ok, and it was the one and only restaurant where we felt the service was poor. Their dessert, however, made up for everything else!! Tempura bananas with coconut ice cream – mmmm…
Bars
We loved the beach bars – We used them daily, including flag service. Service was good, drinks were delicious!!! Our favorites were the Jamaican Browning and the Snake Eyes. The pool bar was great, too – I loved the “Pain in the [--]” – it looked like an astro pop & tasted like candy! Make sure you go to the Martini Bar – the guys up there are hilarious and they make a mean martini in a myriad flavors! I loved the key lime & nutty martinis! We enjoyed the bar at the Sports Complex, too – LOVE the smoothies & the pineapple-infused water! We never got around to the Aura Lounge, but I heard many guests talking up the piano nights.
Beach
Perfect fine sand – calm waters! Plenty of beach chairs and floaties! Relatively clean, raked every morning! Well-stocked with security guards, too – I never felt unsafe leaving my stuff at my beach chair while we got in the water. The only funny thing was the video orientation said not to patronize beach vendors because that encourages them to come back… but the resort security were the ones who allowed them onto the resort!! They take no for an answer, but will give you a sales pitch if you seem unsure. If you walk off the resort, they are more plentiful and a little more insistent.
Diving
The guys at the dive shop were awesome – We loooooved Olaire & Franz! They were great guides to Jamaica’s reefs (not the greatest diving, but warm, clear, and a decent variety of wildlife). If you’re certified, make sure you have either been in the last year or taken the refresher – otherwise it’s $50 before you can dive! Check out the medical questionnaire, too – if you answer “yes” to anything, you WILL need a doctor’s clearance to dive. They don’t mess around!
Catamaran Cruise
Super fun – don’t bother with shoes, though! We sat up front and enjoyed rum drinks as we cruised to the cliffs. We drove past Rick’s, then went to our docking spot at Pirate’s Cave (under Rock House). We were able to jump (or slide!) off the boat, swim into the cave, chill for a while. We enjoyed Red Stripes and the sunset on our way back. Book early in your trip – this is a fun one!!!
The Wedding
I can't speak more highly of our wedding experience. If you are looking for a stress-free wedding, CSA is a great spot!! I couldn’t have been happier! We met with the coordinator, Tamika, the day before the wedding. It couldn’t have been more simple! She had even made our reservations for Feathers that evening since we had a small party (7 of us)! Also, I was not thrilled by my choices of complementary bouquet because none of them came in my favorite color. She asked what color I wanted, I said orange, and she suggested a small bouquet of orange lilies. She called the shop to check availability, and voila! I had a complementary bouquet (just a simple hand-tie of a single type of flower – lovely!) in my favorite color. We also got the flowers for the arch added on as an extra. My bouquet, the arch flowers, and my husband’s boutonniere all coordinated very well! The wrist corsages for our mothers looked great, too. I brought a sand ceremony & our own toasting flutes, and she took care of having them set out on the wedding day. They were pros; the whole proceeding is a well-oiled machine – seriously!! We chose the beach at 10 am; the aisle was freshly raked, chairs were set up, music was ready… we just had to show up! Tamika was even prepared to dab my face and décolletage with a napkin to keep me picture perfect in the intense heat (the sweat marks on my family in the group shots are pretty hilarious! That’s what we get for getting married in Jamaica!) We did use an off-site photo/videographer, and we were very happy with them as well. Our only concern that day was our flutes & cake after the reception – we asked to have them brought back to the room, and neither was. I was able to easily retrieve our flutes with a phone call and a quick trip to the wedding office, but we never got to enjoy the rest of our cake – the Jamaican fruit (SO YUMMY!!!). Oh well!
Checkout/Return Shuttle
Checkout was just as quick and easy as check in – I suggest doing it early. There was a big wait after we finished; looked like we just missed the crowd! We were a little nervous because our bags didn’t arrive until the bus already showed up, but all was good. the bus back was bigger and more comfortable than the shuttle, and there was no stop. The airport check-in line was a headache, but once through, security was a breeze.
Overall
A+! This was our first of MANY trips to Jamaica and Couples. Everyone was so genuinely nice – sometimes people in the service industry have that fake-nice feel to them – not here. We truly enjoyed the people we met on and off staff and were ultimately pleased with every aspect of the trip. The most important thing for someone to remember when visiting Jamaica, or any island, is to JUST RELAX. Life moves more slowly - just take your time, breathe, and chill out. Everything really is IRIE!!!
