My partner and I spent two weeks at this hotel, having read both good and bad reports we were unsure as to what to expect. Overall, it really depends what you are looking for. Yes, it is classed as a four star hotel, and for a third world country it is a four star hotel. Don't expect to compare this, or any other hotel in the Dominican with an equal rated hotel in another part of the world. The Dominican is a very poor country.
The hotel in itself was superb. The rooms were clean, the staff were courteous and overall it was brilliant.
The only problem I had was with the food. It was okay but unimaginative. Two weeks was enough though. There are two alternative restaurants to the main eating area being The Bambu and The Ibiza. Both are good but you are limited to two bookings per week at either. The main restaurant varies meals but becomes monotonous after awhile. If you really get stuck with food burgers, pizza and chips are served every lunch time on the beach and pizza is available in the main restaurant every night.
The staff were very courteous and did what they could to help if needed. The cleaners were excellent. The rooms were kept very clean and if any item such as shampoo or tissues were overlooked they would come back and supply you with whatever you asked for when asked. There is a fridge in your room which is kept stocked each day with 7 up, coke and bottled water free of charge. The only criticism with the room is the air condition system which was extremely noisy and kept us awake at night. A minor criticism however, we chose to turn it off and if we woke up too hot we would put it on for 10 mins or so and turn it off again. It worked for us.
The animation staff work extremely hard, the shows go on 'til 1.00 am. Although we did not go to any of the shows they were not put off by this and would sit with us in the dining room or come and have a chat when we were sunbathing by the pool. They were all very friendly but not pushy.
There are two bars, one on the beach and one at the swimming pool. The beach one closes at 6.00 pm whilst the swimming pool bar is open until 1.00 am. Both are good.
One problem we did have was at the weekends when the locals arrived on a Friday, en masse. They completely took over the swimming pool, the bars and the restaurant. They seemed to come first for service and the holidaymakers who were there for a week/two week duration appeared to come second. Everything went back to normal after the locals left at around 4.00 pm on the Sunday.
The beach was fantastic. There are sellers on the beach who approach you but will go away if you simply say you are not interested. A "no" will suffice. We did book a trip to Paradise Island through one of the beach sellers named Dio (pronounced Theo). Unfortunately one of us was unwell and we were unable to go. I told Dio the day before that this may be the case and sought him out on the day we should have gone. There was no problem, he refunded our money in full. He was pleasant and could not have been more helpful. I recommend you book through him if you want to go on a trip anywhere. He is much cheaper than booking through the holiday rep and there is no hassle if anything goes wrong. Thank you Dio.
Like I said, it depends on what you are looking for, if you want a relaxing holiday and are easy going then you will find that this hotel is a nice place to be.
