“Bugs, Dirt, and Crusty Sheets...Oh My!”

Casa New Yorker

May 21, 2008

We arranged to stay at this place for a few days, thank goodness there was another decent hotel nearby! We were instantly disapointed when we arrived. The pictures online have been doctored to make this dilapidated place look like a magestic mansion in Santa Domingo. Easy check in, which was nice, until we started walking to our tiny room. Floors, walls, everything needed a good wash down, we were not impressed. We struggled through our first night their, luckily finding refuge down the street. Wasted a day of our dream vacation. Don't do the same!

I had the pleasure of staying at the Casa New Yorker in Santo Domingo on December 23, 2007 until January 5, 2008. The hotel is NOT the Marriott. It is a locally run, small hotel with only 9 rooms. Every morning the guests, management and owner got together over complimentary coffee and and continental breakfast and discussed what to do and where to go for the day, what happened the night before, taking day and over night trips to Juan Dolio and Boca Chica beaches together and the do's and do not's of the city and country.

I knew no one in the Dominican Republic when I landed and left with many, many new friends that I met while staying at the hotel. I consider it to be my "home away from home". My two week stay while in Santo Domingo would not have been as pleasurable if I had not stayed at the Casa New Yorker. Oh, and you will NEVER FORGET the wild roof top parties that they throw! I am going back on January 30 I had such a great time!

Lynn has taken over management of the Casa New Yorker from Scotch.

It is still gay owned and operated. Straight people are welcome too. It is 2 blocks from the ocean and 2 blocks from the Colonial Zone.

There is no charge for local guests. ID is left at the front desk. The hotel will arrange airport pick up for $35.00. My room was $45.00/night. Free continental breakfast.

The atmosphere is laid back, welcoming and friendly. Most evenings, the guests gather in the lobby for informal happy hour where guests donate liqour and mixers. The hotel provides glasses and ice. People swap stories and talk about their experiences of the day. Strangers quickly become part of the Casa "family".

There are nicer, fancier hotels in Santo Domingo. But the "down home" atmosphere of the Casa will keep me coming back.

My friend and I were new to Santo Domingo and were a little worried about where to stay. The Casa New Yorker turned out to be a great choice, From the moment we arrived at the airport and were greeted by our hotel escort, we new we had made the right choice. The staff goes out of their way to make you feel right at home. The hotel is a short walk from the Conde, the walking mall. There is always someone in the lobby to let you in and out of the locked gate which made me feel very safe. They have a friendly visitor policy. So when you take a guest in, they will take the cedula (ID) of your guest. After their visit, the staff will check with you that everything is ok before returning your guest their ID. The rooms are comfortable, some small and some a bit larger. They are very clean and basic with a refrigerator, safe and cable TV.
I will definately return to this friendly country and stay at this cozy welcoming and friendly hotel.
