We stayed at RBH in a beachfront villa in May 06 for part of our 20th anniversary trip. We loved it!
We prefer small, laid-back, quiet properties, and this was perfect. The room was immaculate and had all the basics. We had no trouble with water pressure and appreciated the refrigerator and complimentary bottle of water each day. The setting is not over-manicured and has an authentic feel to it.
According to the locals it had been an unusually rainy spring and as a consequence the biting bugs were worse than usual for that time of year. Get some of the new, no stink Off or the bug repellent of your pleasure and go enjoy this wonderful island!
The food at the restaurant, Cedar Grove, was superb and we loved the small, intimate setting. Some nights after dinner we got drinks and sat on the porch near the community room and art gallery and just enjoyed the warm, convivial atmosphere.
The beach is sooooooo beautiful; the water is warm and incredibly clear, and there were very few people. We had folks in the villa next to us, but dividers between the porches worked well to maintain a feeling of privacy. The beach is great for walking and its not too far to walk down to Bankie Banks Dune Preserve (super fun and funky) for drinks and music; it is just past the Cuisinart resort.
A recent review mentioned security issues. We saw the security guys a lot, especially because we would walk the beach at night. There was always a fellow stationed on the beach at the end of the RBH property and that made us feel better as the beach is wonderfully undeveloped for a bit before hitting the next, small resort.
The beach-facing doors on our villa were not the most robust and are showing the strain of the humidity, but they locked and we did not feel vulnerable. We kept valuables in the safe and because we were later visiting an island where security was reported to be a bigger issue, we only carried copies of our passports when out and about. One night there was an incredible, three-hour, sustained thunderstorm with intense rains. We felt wonderfully secure in our room and were glad in the morning to have only the air conditioner and the lapping of the waves as our background noise.
We loved Anguilla. We loved that it is not super-developed; the only US chain we saw any sign of was a Subway shop. (We don’t travel to find same old, same old.) The people are warm and friendly. We drove all over and had no problems. Bart arranged rental of a right-hand driving car, which was delivered to the resort. (We traveled to some “other-side” driving countries last year and having the right-hand drive car, kept my husband oriented.)
As for dining, we did not have a bad meal. We loved walking down to Cedar Grove at RBH, reveled in the on-the-water setting and friendly service at Straw Hat, and casual atmospheres at Tastey’s and Smokeys. The latter is also on the water, but our view was lost when yet another thunderstorm brought strong winds and a driving rain against which the window covers had to be lowered. We also highly recommend the smoothie stand/arts and crafts shop right off the roundabout to Sandy Ground. It is run by some US-expatriates who are fun to chat with while enjoying their yummy drinks.
We did the catamaran trip on Chocolat and very much enjoyed the snorkeling, the company, the food and drink. Another day we drove to Crocus Bay and bought a ride with Calvin to Little Bay for some wondrous snorkeling. We arrived early for lunch at Gwen’s Reggae Grill on Shoal Bay East, but she made us tasty, huge lunches anyway. SBE is also gorgeous and the resorts there looked nice, if you wanted to be with a few more people, but still not crowded.
Finally, as a side note, I had a slight medical issue which needed attention on a Saturday. The office staff gave us directions to the medical center in The Valley where I was seen first by a nurse, later by a physician, and then obtained two medications all for less than $100, payable by cash, credit card or traveler check. Like any walk-in center, there was a little wait, but we were entertained by a TV featuring old US shows – brought back memories!
In sum, if you like a nice, casual, warm, uncrowded place to stay and not break the bank, the RBH villas are the ticket. The “Garden Rooms” are in need of updating, and are a bit back from the beach, but depending on your budget and expectations, could be just fine too.
