We can fully recommend at least one nights stay at this hotel. Our stay was at the beginning of March 2005 and we were given a delux room. The room was basic, but as good as those of an average chain motel, with a television and normal bathroom facilities with running water as hot as the desert itself.

The site has its own restaurant and bar and these being in the middle of the desert are like a mini oasis. The food in the restaurant was excellent on the night we chose to eat there, with a varied menu at reasonable prices. We were not rushed in anyway which was ideal after a long day of travelling. As we were travelling out of season there was no wait for a table but a booking maybe advisable at the busy time of the tourist season. The staff were friendly, courteous and helpful in every way.

Whilst the hotel is ideal, the five star billing is given for the real star the desert itself. Our visit happened just after the heavy rains experienced this winter by Southern California. The desert around the hotel and surrounding areas was particularly green and the flowers were in abundance. The whole area said peace and tranquility. We missed the sunset on our arrival but arose early to catch the sunrise over the sand dunes. This had to be seen to be believed, and no matter how many photo's you take the memories seen with the naked eye will remain for ever. To look and see the starkness of the desert against snow capped mountains was beautiful.

Each visit will be unique, and rest assured we will return to witness these sites again. My only regret is that I did not see a roadrunner, oh well maybe next time. Thank you Stovepipe Wells.

We stayed in a "deluxe" room, which meant we had potable water from the tap and a TV with cable. I highly recommend the upgrade unless you're really on a tight budget. We visited in mid-December 2004. It gets dark by 6 in December, so unless you're in to star gazing in a big way you'll enjoy the TV and the Turner Movie Channel. Amazingly, this place allows dogs in the rooms at no extra charge. Be sure to ask for a room facing the dunes. The "General Store" across from the hotel has the most reasonable prices in the whole valley, at least 20% cheaper than the equivalent store in Furnace Creek. Breakfast at the restaurant was good, but the dinner was just Ok. Furnace Creek has a better restaurant. Be sure to visit Mosaic Canyon, right next to the hotel. It's a narrow canyon through various color quartz rock. The dunes are also very close by, and easier to climb than you might think. Some of the staff were a bit odd, like characters out of the X-Files. This will just make your visit more interesting. Remember you're in the middle of Death Valley, so be thankful for any amenities whatsoever!

“Good place”

I was there last spring and it was ok. The room was clean and spatious. There was no TV, which did not disturb me at all - but maybe some could be disappointed.

The staff is strange, almost scarry - too much sun must be bad for health, I guess - but I had no problems. The general store next to the rooms is very usefull, and the pool, open till midnight is a good thing too.

The location is not bad. Close to the sand dunes. I think Furnace Creek is a better place to stay and explore the valley (very central location) but if you can't afford it, Stovepipe Wells is a very valuable solution.

As soon as we staterd out drive through death Valley we knew it would be interesting. The first thing we see is a Golden eagle sitting on a post. Stayed here for 1 night on the 9th October. Could not fault the Hotel at all. The rooms were very clean and so to was the saloon Bar, restaurant and swimming Pool. Wished we had stayed here for another night too. Within easy driving distance to Furnace Creek and Badwater. Would recommend this Hotel to anyone, even if they decide to just drice through, it is worth staying a night in Death Valley to get the real feel of Death Valley. Hope to return one day.

My wife and I stayed here on 6th October 2004 and it was fantastic. In the middle of no where, the staff were friendly and the deluxe accommodation was good.
The service in the restaurant and quality of the food for dinner and breakfast was excellent.
My advice is get up before sunrise and drive the couple of miles to the nearby sand dunes and walk into them and watch the sun come up. You see the overnight animal tracks and feel totally alone in the peace and solitude in these 100 foot dunes...WOW!
We watched a stealth fighter bomber fly over and the sun rise up over the mountains and it started to warm up very quickly.
After breakfast we drove down to Badwater (the lowest point in the US - 282 feet below sea level) and by 1000 hours it was 120 Degrees Fahrenheit! How do we know this? We were sad enough to take a thermometer.
Of all the places we visited in the States, this was one of the most amazing!
Make sure you have enough fuel though as the Gas Stations in and around the park were expensive, albeit Stove Pipe Wells was cheaper than in the mountains surrounding the valley.
