“Great design, Perfect location but some little problems”

Peninsula Tokyo

The Peninsula Tokyo is perfectly located at five minutes walk from the elegant district of Ginza where you'll find the best boutiques of the Japanese capital and a lot restaurants all around.
The rooms are very spacious and offer stunning views of Tokyo if you select a Deluxe category with view. In this case, you'll have a beautiful space extremly well designed of 60 sq meters with two large windows offering a breathtaking view. Beds are more than comfortable and the Peninsula touch offers the best in room technology with a valet box, a personal humidity controller and a lot of buttons for lights, windows, music, TV, nails dryer... You'll need about one day to understand the function of all buttons but all these details offer the best in term of comfort. The bathroom is one of the most exquisite i've seen with a spa touch which reduces the light and turn on a relaxing music but also, the high tech automatic toilets only japanese have the secret... Incredible!!!
Don't expect any mistake of the staff because all of them are truly excellent and perfectly trained. Moreover, don't forget they're japanese and it means there is a real devotion to the customers in their mentality. All of them are extremly smily and efficient.
Consequently, The Peninsula could be the best hotel of Tokyo if there wasn't any problem with cleanliness... A dirty directory book full of coffee and some pillows on the sofa not really clean... Moreover, when we came back on the evening, our key didn't work anymore and we have been obliged to wait more than ten minutes before somebody comes to open it, not acceptable in one of the new palace of Tokyo...
And personally, we don't like the lobby used as a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, high tea, dinner... and not really nice when you arrive with your baggage in the middle of the customers who are eating...
A last bad detail... the online reservation system which doen't give the right information about the rate if you're three...
But this is a very good hotel in Tokyo even if i'll choose an other one next time.

“Great hotel, best in Ginza”

Peninsula Tokyo

Jan 19, 2008

Stayed in a standard room which is actually of a good size and with a pleasant layout. Nice sofa infront of the TV which means that you don;t see the bed when kicking back. Seperate dressing area and wardrobe. Excellent bahroom. Lots of technology in the room.

Negatives: Only one negative and that is that there's literally no views, unless you are interested in looking into a typical Japanese office building. I think the bigger rooms and suites have a view overlooking the imperial park, but most rooms will not have much of a view. The hotel building itself is not a highrise such as the ritz, park hyatt and mandarin.

Positives: the location is smack in the middle of fancy Ginza with some great shops (very top shelf though..). And it is just by the park so i would think it is geat for those who would like to go jogging.
The bar at the top of the hotel (seperate lift) is small but good and more fun than say the bar in the ritz-carlton, but still not as fun at the american bar at the Park Hyatt.

And as mentioned rooms are of a good size and very well laid out. As always in 5* tokyo hotels the service is phenomenal.

If you are visiting Tokyo for the first time then I would recommend Ritz-Carlton purely because of the stunning views - but if that's not important then this is a strong choice.

“Gorgeous rooms!”

My husband and I spent a night at the Peninsula Tokyo on our honeymoon in Japan. I wish we could have stayed longer (but we were heading to Kyoto) The Peninsula was beautiful! Our room was absolutely gorgeous- I have never stayed somewhere so nice. It is super modern with all the electronic amenities that Japan does so well. I loved pressing all the buttons everywhere to see what htey would do. The bed was very comfortable, the rainforest shower was fantastic. The front desk was very polite, helpful, and spoke English well. My only complaint would be that the restaurants were very expensive and this hotel is very upscale- such that us Americans felt severely underdressed wearing jeans and walking through the lobby. This isn't really a place to relax and be yourself- everyone looked like they fell out of a fashion magazine- but maybe that's just Tokyo for you. All in all- a very nice stay and well worth the money.

“Location! Location! Location!”

Peninsula Tokyo

Here are my notes from an early December stay at Peninsula Tokyo -- single occupancy stay while attending a wedding. Overall I thought it was an excellent hotel that was super-conveniently located. Not exactly inexpensive, but in this category I think it offers a lot for the money.

The Hotel: Everything still feels & smells brand new. It's a stand-alone building, so it's nice not having to wade through a shopping mall / office tower crowd on the way to the hotel.

The Room: I stayed in Room 1311, a Superior King (= standard) room booked via the hotel website. It was clearly the smallest room category offered, but my feelings weren't hurt; by Tokyo standards I think the room can pass as a junior-junior suite, with an intelligent layout that basically avoids your having to stare at your bed while lounging on the couch & watching TV. Wonderful material used throughout, with lots of textured material like wood and granite. Controls for room temperature *and* humidity. Great audio-visual system setup, including my first in-room internet radio station. The sound quality is as internet radio does, but it's still nice to have tons of music genre on hand. In-room espresso machine is handy for taking a quick breather in between activites. There's also a FOMA (3G) phone in the room, enabling use as a cordless phone throughout the hotel. It's a cute feature but I would have found it much more useful if in-city calls were enabled (and billed to the room). (I rented a mobile phone via the business center, and it's fine, but they don't come with email enabled. Ugh.) The room phone also has a brilliant IP Phone feature, offering presumably dirt-cheap calling rates (or free?) internationally; I didn't see any notes around the room as to the calling rates, but it's a great touch. Nicely furnished bathroom, with the requisite top-of-line Toto Washlet (with motorized seats) setup. The room looks out to another office building (reminiscent of mid-town NYC hotels) but this wasn't a big issue as it was a weekend stay.

The Staff: Varies between amazing to... "meh." Check-in was slow-ish, as if still going through on-the-job training. The door people & bell staff were unfailingly polite, the concierge was helpful. The most amazing was the room valet & cleaning service, though -- I asked for a dress shirt to be pressed at 7pm (regular service cutoff is 10pm, with "by next morning" return) and it came back within 15 minutes. Check-out however was an absolute disaster -- the hotel was fully booked for the weekend and the crowd completely turned over at exactly 12 noon, the check-out time. Calls to the bell desk went unanswered, there was a 20-person queue at checkout, and when asked if I could just leave the key in the room and have the billing details emailed to me, the man handling the line responded that I needed to have Express Checkout arranged beforehand. Egads.

Location: Outstanding. Perfect. My current favorite. (Previously I used to stay frequently at Cerulean Tower in Shibuya for work.) Insanely short walk to the heart of Ginza (between Yurakucho Bic Camera, Muji flagship, Uniqlo flagship, and the new Tokyu Hands Ginza, all of my usual Tokyo shopping needs can be completed in like an hour), direct in-building connection to the Hibiya subway station (from which the lines can take you anywhere with zero or one transfer) and a 1-block walk to the Yurakucho JR station. A convenience store 1/2 block away, open 24 hours with everything you need. What's not to like? I agree the Park Hyatt is a perfectly fine hotel and all, but the Peninsula lets you walk right into center of everything with no shuttle buses and taxis.

Conclusion: Is it worth 2X Cerulean Tower's room rate? Maybe. Sometimes. Certainly for short stays requiring super-efficient surgical shopping strikes.

Quick tip: The limousine bus to the hotel makes 2 slow and anguishing stops at TCAT and Tokyo Station on the way to the hotel -- I think the return trip to Narita makes like 4-5 stops on the way out. Unless you have a ton of bags, repeat travelers should certainly take the Narita Express and hop into a cab at Tokyo Station.

Many great things can be said about this new hotel, but its best features from my perspective were the location and the view. I stayed at its Deluxe Suite on the 21st floor. My spacious living space overlooked the Imperial Palace and the Hibiya Park. The teeming streets of Ginza with all its beautiful shops and wonderful restaurants were a few minutes’ walk away from the hotel. The Hibiya subway station was directly, but discreetly, connected to the Hotel’s B1 level. The room itself was sensibly decorated with smart buttons all around, giving me a great degree of control over the space during my stay. I could even control the humidity level of the living room and the sleeping quarters. The bath tub was spacious, affording me a view of the Imperial Palace and the Tokyo skyline as well as Bloomberg news channel on an LCD placed on the bathroom wall opposite the tub. There was a special Spa button on the bath control panel, which dimmed the lights and played relaxing music. With whirlpool on the tub, things could have been absolutely perfect. There was a separate standing shower as well as a bidet toilet in an enclosed space in the corner of the master bath. On my first day, there were Japanese persimmons and snacks, similar to Ritz’s 5 F&B presentations, provided on our dining table in the living space. There was also a complimentary bottle of Peninsula-branded French cabernet. The espresso maker in the room was wonderful, and we enjoyed having the famous Peninsula tea in our hotel room with the hot water dispensed from the machine.

Much is said about the lobby, but I did not mind the intimacy of the space nor the afternoon crowds of curious Tokyo citizens waiting patiently in line to try the famous afternoon tea in the Lobby. The gym lacked free weights, but the equipment was new and I appreciated the round-the-clock presence of a trainer who provided complimentary bottles of mineral water and hand towels. The pool was absolutely beautiful.

The service was not perfect. I somehow ended up carrying my own luggage throughout the entire check-in process. The checkout process was a more enjoyable experience. The staff even provided us with bottles of mineral water as I stepped into my ride to Narita. During the checkout, the front desk staff had asked me about my flight details, and I was pleasantly surprised to realize at Narita that my seats had been upgraded.
