hi,

we are a english family of 5 (children 10,13,15)now living in florida and doing our first road trip as a family (my husband and i have travelled all over usa -before kids)

we have 2 weeks next month and i have found a great cabin near Morganton(DON`T KNOW THE AREA BUT LOOKS GORGEOUS!) which i am probably going to book for a week .............we want a few stop-overs en-route there but prob. aim to get home quicker on the way back. am thinking of st augustine, amelia island in Florida (we are coming from Boca)then i`m not sure. i have been to Savannah and it is lovely but whether its worth the detour as far as the kids are concerned i`m not sure. Not sure if we want to face Atlanta either as we will be in small town lazy road trip mode..............looking at previous posts i like the sound of Chatanooga, Ashville..........should these be day trips from our cabin or en-routers?????????

I would steer you to the gatlinburg/pigeon forge TN area (Smokie Mtns) -- especially Cades Cove ---- lots to do, and lots of amusement type activities for the kids ---- it is the only "Must See" in the southeast (outside of Florida). Asheville and Chattanooga are good, but for kids your age, i would go to the Smokies.

Amelia Island is good, chech out Fort Clinch and don't miss Fernandina, a beautiful old town. I'd go to Okefenokee Swamp too, great for the whole family. It's 20-30 minutes off I-95 to the west entrance. Savannah is 10 minutes from I-95, definatly worth it.

Atlanta might or might not be good for the kids, depending on what they like. Check out the aquarium in Chattanooga and the Imax. Lots of good places to eat around there.

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge? The kids might enjoy it, personally I'd avoid it like the plague.
