Can you walk from Emmanuel College to Stop and Shop??? |
Hi, Not really the best area for a young woman alone, to be walking through. She could also try the Stop and Shop on Harvard Avenue in Brookline, which is located near the Green Line and might work out for her.
Emmanuel is a short walk to the 39 bus stop across from the MFA. That route goes up Huntington, almost in front of the Stop and Shop on Tremont.
Emmannuel has a very good police dept. The chief is a retired Colonel on the Mass. State Police. The security on and around the grounds is very good. Thought you may want to know this.
hmmmm.... not a very safe walk, huh? That's good to know. She'll prob be walking at night too. thanks.

You could check out the store at 155 Harvard St. in Brookline, which I mentioned in answer to one of your first posts and which is mentioned again above. It is about a mile and a half from the college, part of which is residential Brookline, then crossing a little bridge over a creek on Longwood Ave. into a main street in the hospital area and back to the college. Take a look on Mapquest (which shows the college). Consider that it's going to be pretty cold much of the year to be walking to either store, aside from the issue of safe neighborhoods. Even closer than both Stop & Shops is a Shaw's at 33 Kilmarnock Street, which would probably be happy to have an experienced new employee.
I found it amusing that it took so long for someone to mention that the closest supermarket to Emmanuel is the Shaw's on Boylston... and that person is from Brazil! Also, I didn't see (or am I missing something) where the student will be residing. Emmanuel is on the Fenway, but is that where she'll be living? A lot of students live on Park Drive, Beacon St., Brookline Ave, etc. While Shaw's is the closest to the main entrance to Emmanuel, there's a smaller market on Beacon St., too, at St. Mary's.

Your niece would be walking in the Longwood medical area which is safe and busy. She could walk down Francis Street to Brookline Avenue, past Beth Israel Hospital to Emmanuel & Simons College area. Brookline Stop & Shop is far and she would be walking in same neighborhood to get public transportation. Stop & Shop on Tremont Street is right in Brigham Circle, Mission Hill area. It's a fairly new, large store.. lots of students, medical personel now live in Mission Hill area.
I agree with the others: why does it have to be Stop and Shop? Why not Shaws or even Whole Foods? Also, where exactly is her dorm/apartment?
The niece is already working for a Stop and Shop. If she transfers, she will be able to keep the same hourly wage. Starting at another place could mean starting at a lower hourly rate.
You should check what Shaw's and Whole foods are offering in Boston. Starting wage for an experienced worker may be higher than her seniority gets her at home or on transfer. (And FYI: I may be IN Brazil, but I'm FROM Cambridge.)
