Decisions, decisions...we're planning our second trip to Maui either this December or January/February and can't decide whether to go back to the Maui Kamaole or try something new. MK was gorgeous, we stayed in the K building right by the upper pool, but the rates have gone up since October '06 and we're trying to be budget conscious.:) KKN has been recommended, but I keep coming back to HPH and the smack on the beach location. Is the extra $ worth it? We're a family of 4, two boys aged 10 and 6.

Thanks for your help!

we are scheduled to go to hph for the 3rd time in one year --- our friends will be staying at kkn and coming across to spend time with us -- we personally feel that the condo on the lower floor of a low rise is worth the extra money- from the lanai its across the grass and onto the beach-- every condo in hph is an oceanfront view --- it will be a lot easier for you and the boys to get to and from the beach with all the stuff you will be carrying for them if you dont have to walk and cross the road which gets pretty busy at times -and then they have to use the bathroom and want something to eat etc etc

Thanks! The low rise units are the ones I'm drooling over...which ones have you stayed in; would you recommend any of them in particular?

have stayed in 4-5 and scheduled for 6 in nov

liked 4 better then 5 --- someone also recommended 2-- hph is so popular you might have to "settle" on a different unit

have you looked at the individual units on their web site

Its not often you see "budget" and HPH in the same sentence but I think it is worth the extra $.The beach is usually child friendly with a gradual slope and not often do you get strong wave action but enough action at times for your sons to go boggie boarding.

We have stayed in 8-has been renovated -very funky- in a good way.Usually we are in the high-rise.

Have you considered that with 2 young-ins you might want 2 bathrooms which all the high-rise condos have?

High season starts Dec.15th so if possible early Dec is cheaper. Also in Jan.there can be winter storms-one year we arrived mid january to find that a storm 2 days before had "eaten "the beach -all that was left were the large and small black volcanic rocks-HPH blocked the stairs to the rocks -dangerous-So you might consider late february, if possible. That said we still had a great time and Kam 1 beach was still OK and only a short walk to the north.

If you have'nt gone to their website- go-and check them out.I wouldn't book through the website -PHONE them and, if available, they can confirm your exact unit that day by e-mail.

lougee- we reserved # 6 for October1st back in Feb- will try not to damage it.

Oh, I wouldn't go to KKN after enjoying Maui Kamaole. Hale Pau Hana...yes!

BTW, have you checked VRBO's for Maui Kamaole? The economy isn't very strong right now. Ignore rack rates; you might find something affordable. You'll spend more at HPH because it is beachfront instead of across from the beach. When the area was being developed it was first come, first serve for oceanfront!

Great feedback, thanks -- keep it coming!

Since we're flying on points I decided I'd better book; December 8 to 22, less than six months away, woo hoo!

I've surfed vrbo for both KKN and MK and there are lots of units still available. And I've probably spent too much time on the HPH website! Not sure why I got stuck on the low-rise buildings, 2 bathrooms is a good idea. I'll keep looking for the perfect and best-priced spot.

we booked it for nov 10-20 last dec 2

we looked at the unit in april -- my dw the decorator didnt like the fact that there is a piece of furniture in the hallway between the front door (sort of opposite the bathroom) and the dining room -- since that was the only lower unit available for the our dates i told her to get over it- appreciate your willingness to not damage the unit-------------are you a smoker -- we are not but again no option

Strik - not sure if you've booked yet - have you also had a look at Kamaole Nalu? It's next to HPH and all units are 2 bed/2 bath...thats where we always stay with our boys. Ground floor unit - they come and go as they please to the beach.

The HPH low rise units are nice but all are 1 bedroom and are a bit small.

With the kids I would definately go for the beach front rather than across the street - just think, no more back and forth across Kihei Raod!!

Enjoy,

lwbc

Thanks again, everybody...we went back and forth and all decided that as much as we wanted to be On the beach or really close, we enjoyed the grounds at MK so much last time we'd miss it if we didn't go again! The condo we had last time in the K building was booked up, but I managed to find a 2-bed in M that should suit us perfectly. What's nice too is that we met the owners on our last visit :)

We love Hale Pau Hana. We have stayed in units 2 (our favorite) 18 and 24. They were all gorgeous. Unit 23 is great too, I had to peak at it the last time we were there. We have a 13 year old son and have been staying there for the last 4 years with him. It's a great family place. The beachfront location cannot be beat. They also do a hula show every tuesday night at sunset. Lots of fun to take your glass of wine out and sit on a chaise and watch!

Our friends stayed at KKN while we were there and if you are on a budget it's a great place to stay. The one thing I liked about the complex was the pool, nice and large and quiet.
