Hello,

My family is planning to travel to SPI this Saturday July 26, 2008. How badly is the island damaged? Would you still recommend that we travel there so soon after the hurricane?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Dee

At present, I don't think anyone knows. In the light of day tomorrow, I would suggest getting updated with the weather channel (although they tend to exaggerate everything) and googling SPI websites especially the chamber of commerce site for what is really going on. While I think there was probably a lot of wind damage (ie. signs, traffic lights, etc. blown down, tree and vegetation damage, some broken windows, etc.), from what I have heard, the island held up pretty well. Don't know where you were planning on staying, but certainly call them and ask about current conditions. Probably by the weekend, the sun will be out and the clean up crews will be working.

Thanks for your reply. We're planning to stay at a condo on Morningside Drive called Morning Breeze. Do you know the area? When I listen to the news I don't know what area of the island this is considered. Do you know if it's north, south, etc.?

Thanks,

Dee

Google Morning Breeze condo South Padre to get a map showing the location at 129 E. Morningside Drive. That part of the island is near Port Isabel. Here's a link to a story which quotes a resident of Port Isabel. …yahoo.com/s/…storm_dolly_dc_27

Dolly is a slow moving storm that is dumping a lot of rain along with the high winds. Widespread flooding is feared.

I expect it's going to be a huge mess down there. You'll have to call to see whether you should try to go.

The first thing you need to know is if the power has been restored to the property you are staying at.

I heard all power was out in SPI and Port Isabel as of last night and no telling where the power would be restored first. I would guess Port Isabel before SPI. If you can postpone your trip, I would.

I agree w/ Robert, if you can postpone your trip, do so. This storm is dumping a LOT of rain, and the drainage is terrible. I'm up in N. San Antonio, and w/the moderate amount of rain received here, the streets are a mess. If you do go, you will be dealing w/ a big mess. HTH...

Unfortunately, we cannot postpone our trip because we've purchased seven plane tickets. The agent says the property survived the hurricane intact. However, the power is still out and I'm wondering about the flooding on the island. The photos I've seen do not show flooding on SPI, just in other places.

Does anyone have any up to date info on the power outages and/or flooding?

Thanks,

Dee

Power is not expected to be restored for at least 2 days (maybe longer). Phone use is limited. If your condo has a generator, you might be able to stay there. Have you tried contacting the condo personally? I understand your dilemma with tickets already purchased. You might possibly consider staying a night or 2 in Harlingen or Brownsville (not for sure about their power situation)until power is back on the island.

Last nite on the local Houston news it was said that it could be 1-2 wks before power is restored. A convoy from Reliant Energy left yesterday to help, but lots of power outdages also in Brownsville and Harlingen. Power poles were also down, not just lines. Heard this am that SPI now has water but you have to boil first. Are you flying into Harlingen or Brownsville? Make sure they are up and running.

Forgive me for repeating some things that had already been said. I need to read more closely.

This is probably too late to help, but just in case... they are currently turning tourists away at the bridge. If you do not have urgent business on the island, then you can't get on. They're trying to save the limited resources for residents and emergency workers.
