Is henderson a nice place to raise kids |
|
The City of Henderson is now the 2nd largest city in the state of Nevada. As the Vegas Valley has grown there are many great neighborhoods. Green Valley, Green Valley Ranch, Anthem, Seven Hills, etc are all great areas if you go house hunting you will find many new areas as it continues to grow. The area of old Henderson is pretty far away from the newer areas that I would recommend. It is old and not very nice, but its also not an eye sore for the city of Henderson. Green Valley Little League is a very strong program and has made the little league world series. There are a ton of great parks in the area and all of the schools are new. Boulder City is a small town that is also growing. Many people feel its a great place, for me a little too small and far away although its not very far. Vegas has a high Mormon population and BC probably has the highest concentration of Mormon residents in the area.

Also you dont say where you are moving from but compared to other West Coast cities Vegas is still an inexpensive place to buy a house, although the average home price has increased drastically over the past 5 years (last year the price actually went down). My brother recently sold his house and got about $20k less than the original asking price after about 3 months on the market, on the flip side he bought another house in Anthem for less than the builder originally wanted for it. For $500k you can still get a large new house, which you cant in any other West Coast metro area.

thanks so much GoodBear now I feel more at ease. We are from New Jersey so thats an awefully far distance. My husband is currently testing for a job near the Lake Mead area so its not a definite yet but a good possibility he may get hired. I am very scared as is expected to totally relocate to the other side but at the same time it is very exciting. We went to Vegas for our honeymoon 10 years ago and again after that. I just think the whole area is so beautiful. I can definitely see myself living there. My husband currrently works for a water company in NJ so we joked years ago when we were in Nevada that maybe sometime the oportunity will come up that they need someone and he did find a job opening so we are going to go for it. I had went under the chamber website and it did look very nice and hoped someone could confirm this.

Henderson is great! I moved here from California about 3 years ago. I live on the east side and work in the Lake Mead area as well. Our neighborhood is super family friendly (Paradise Hills) and overall Henderson is a safe place to live. As referenced above, there are parks EVERYWHERE. The City of Henderson is very active in creating and keeping a family community here. There are some blighted areas (as with any city) but as the community grows those areas are being redeveloped. The downtown area is going through a heavy redevelopment right now. Boulder City is a small, quiet, sleeper community. There are openly anti-growth, so very different from Henderson. Not a far drive from where your husband is looking to move though. Those that live there, love it there. It just has to be the right fit for you. I'd be happy to help you with anything else you may have questions about and I wish your husband good luck on the interview!

Ms Bing thanks very much for your reply! Its nice to hear you are very happy with it and makes me excited that I would love it as well. I think its so beautiful in that area and I can definitely see myself living there. My husband went for a test with the water company which he told me was a supposedly sought after job there according to some of the people also taking the test. Im really hoping he gets the job as he is highly qualified or else he would have never flew out there. My husband did see a realtor yesterday since he had a day to himself before coming back to New Jersey. Im glad he went to check out the Henderson area as its nice to be prepared ahead of time incase he does get the job. Right now we live in a city and I hate it, My dream is to move to Nevada and I think it would be such a great change for me. Im in a point in my life where I need a change and just very bored with my surroundings. Can you tell me some of your favorite things to do there? Also are the kids happy with the area? I looked under the Chamber website and saw they did have alot of play areas like you mentioned, especially pools and water playgrounds. Are they as nice as they seem in the pictures? Also do you have to pay to use these facilities or are they included depending on what area you live in in Henderson. Also are jobs easy to come by? It seems like they must have a ton of jobs available. Also do you know anything about the hospital in the area? My daughter has diabetes so sometimes we do have problems and have to take care of whatever comes up. thanks

Hello, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, it's been busy! Favorite things to do out here....Dinner and shopping at the District or at Lake Las Vegas. Husband loves to ride his bike and there are tons of cyclists out here. They have a ton of paths and trails for cyclists, runners, and walkers. We go down to the strip every once in awhile to catch a show or concert. There is always someone in town you would want to see. It's nice that if you're in the mood for a night out, the possibilities are endless. It only takes about 20 minutes to get to the strip, less from other parts of Henderson. I would look at the Green Valley Ranch website and the Lake Las Vegas website. Those are the two main resorts in Henderson. We are also very close to Lake Mead. Lots of water activity options there. The City puts on various concerts and shows and most are free to the public. The Henderson Pavilion has kids stuff going on nearly every week. Henderson is a very family oriented city. I work with the City quite a bit and their focus truly is to make Henderson "A place to call to home" (their motto). You will also find a park about every 20 feet. I work for a developer and the City asks us to create a public park within developments, so you will find them just about everywhere. They are very nice parks. Mission park is the closest to my neighborhood and is a great park. They have a nice water playground for the kids and soccer, tennis, baseball facilities. I don't mean to gush over parks, but I NEVER went to the park when I lived in California and now, I can't imagine not having a park down the street. You mentioned the pictures from the Chamber website. Yes they are as nice. I think you're looking at some of the multi-gen centers. The largest one is off of Green Valley Parkway and has the big pools and slides, etc. It is as nice as it looks. That one does have a small fee, I think maybe $2 or something, some of the others centers do not charge at all though. I think we have 6 Multi-gen centers in Henderson. About once a quarter we get something from the City with the list of activities going on at the various ones. Quite a few things are free. Most of the classes, and there are lots of classes for all ages, have a fee but it's not pricey. The Parks and Recreation department does a pretty good job out here. How old are your children? Job market is great. There are tons of jobs. We have a lot of major employers here, a majority are the casinos and resorts but there are still lots of "non gaming" industries too. The City of Henderson is the largest employer for Henderson. They post jobs on their website. People in the medical field are in very high demand and make great wages too. If you give me an idea of what field you are looking at, I can give you some suggestions and maybe put you in touch with some people. When will you husband found out about the SNWA job? Hospitals: Henderson has 2 hospitals. One on each side of town. You can look them up online. St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. The Siena campus is on the East side and the De Lima campus is on the West. St. Rose is a great hospital with very good people running it. Then there are plenty of hospitals outside of Henderson. UMC handles a majority of the serious trauma, as does Sunrise Hospital. Sunrise has lots of specialists in the various pediatric fields. Emergency rooms are busy of course and if it's not a serious emergency, you will have to wait quite a bit most times. Emergency Departments: Getting a job with Henderson Fire or Police is very, very, competitive so they get to pick the best of the best. They pay well and have the best equipment so it makes it desirable to work for them. As with every company or department, they aren't perfect, but I've never had a bad time with them. Weather: Currently it's about 105. Summers are very, very warm. I love it personally. Not everyone does. It does take some adjusting because it doesn't cool off in the evenings either. You could walk outside at 2 a.m. and it will still be 100 degrees. No humidity though, it's a dry heat. It sounds silly, but it really makes a difference when you remove humidity. That's just from June-September. It does cool down quite a bit in the winter, not nearly as cold as the East Coast though. Sorry to write so much, but was trying to cover all bases and make up for my tardiness in responding. :-)

Wow thanks for all of the information, that is really helpful! I love to go walking so that nice to hear there are plenty of trails. I'd also like to ride a bike but around here its too congested. I also love the idea that there is so much going on in Las Vegas and like you said the possbilities are endless. That is why Im so attracted to moving there. I too rarely go to the parks around here. I think having them everywhere like you do would be a great thing and a much nicer atmosphere for my children. My kids are 3, 5, and 15 years old. My 15 year old wouldnt be very happy about moving because of course she has friends here. But Im sure eventually she would love it. I have been staying home for 5 years now and will be going back probably in 2 or 3 years after my 3 year old starts school. I was previously a Secretary but couldnt see doing that again. I would like something a bit more exciting. My daughter would like to get into the medical field so that would be great since they are in high demand there. Thanks for offering some job connections, I will let you know. Its been a week since my husband took the test . He got an e-mail on Friday, the day he came home, saying he passed the test (some people my husband were talking to said to him they have taken this test a few times so it wasnt an easy test). Im glad he passed because that would have been a real bummer coming home to bad news after all he went through with the his flights. The water department said they were passing his information onto another department and just awaiting either a phone interview or another trip out there for an in person interview (not sure what they will do yet). I will definitely keep you posted. If my husband does get the job I will probably be writing to you constantly with questions. lol. Have a Great Day! Lin

Henderson is pretty much safe, but down town henderson (boulder hwy area) is becoming a dump. Homeless people 'n drugies. Never seen so many these past few years. Crime is on the rise here, but thats expected with the amount of people moving here. Just glad there a bunch of cops on the streets.

Hi there I live in the same neighborhood as Mrs. Bing...hi neighbor. I couoldn't love where we live more. My daughter fgoes to a brand new school. I highly recommend if you move here you look in our area. It is the farthest southest in the Valley before heading to BC which is ten minutes away. We moved here 3 years ago as well. We moved from Southern CA and were able to buy a beautiful home. The prices have come way down since we moved here. I am a loan officer and my company also has a real estate division I would be happy to assist you in any way I can. I hope your husband gets the job!
