I'll be bringing my mother this weekend. She is 84. When I was a child we stayed every year at breakers. The first motel after the pier. It's gone now, and we have reservations at LaPlaya, 2 miles from the pier. We needed a separate bedroom with kitchen etc....she insists on paying, otherwise, we would be somewhere else. I read the Hawaiian Inn has a luau. Not exactly sure, but I'm hoping I can drive on the beach in front of the hotel and rent an umbrella and chair for her. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Of course driving on the beach is a great idea. You can enter and exit and many places. Many people on this forum stay at LaPlaya and they will know about the beach there.

Apparently the luau is new and improved. Always a good tourist choice. Your grandmother will probably be very surprised at the boardwalk area and the changes in progress there. There is a nice new park at the end of the pier. We always enjoy driving on the beach at Ponce Inlet and going out onto the jetty. You can enter the elevated walk from the park and it is accessible by all from there.

We also enjoy the Flager Beach pier and watching people fish from there. So many things to do, simple little things, inexpensive, and just enjoying the view of the ocean is majestic.

Good luck

Any chance Grandma enjoys grehyound racing? There is a new state of the art greyhound track just around the corner from the old one (Daytona Speedway). Tuesdays was ladies free day at the old one.

Thanks for the great ideas....grandma at the dog races...I can't wait to see this one! I'm gonna try it....is the ponce inlet wheelchair accessible? Gonna try the pier at flager as well. We usually stop on the way out of daytona and eat breakfast there. Where can we buy fresh seafood?

Whenever my friend travels with her elderly mom, she checks out if the local senior center is having any kind of event, excursion, gathering, what have you. As her mom puts it, "Us old ladies like to talk to each other!" Some of the trips can be fun and I'm sure you could go along too.

If memory serves, Ponce Inlet lighthouse is wheelchair accessible, except for the actual lighthouse. There are lots of buildings and artifacts to see. How about Nascar? The Daytona Speedway IMAX is great and the track tour would probably work (my Mom is 83 and like Nascar, probably due to my racing past). Don't forget Aunt Catfish's on the river for lunch. Or Ritter's for ice cream.

hi all! you could make a really nice day of ponce inlet because right behind the lighthouse is a turtle hospital and there is also a little bird santuary there too...then off to the side of those (signs everywhere) there is a nature trail, it is very beautiful back in there...i have had my kids in strollers back there many times so i am sure you will be able to navigate a wheelchair just fine...then, around the way (still in ponce inlet), there is a nice restaurant called "inlet harbor" where you can sit outside and enjoy the river or you could take her to the other restaurant right there called "down the hatch" to watch the dolphins (if they are around) through the windows (in the a/c)...my favorite seafood market (for preparing yourself or they have a small cafe next door) is hull's seafood on granada in ormond...they have incredible fresh, local seafood...enjoy!!

Have you asked what *she* wants to do?

If, at 84, she is not only still up for travel, but feisty enough to insist on paying, then perhaps seeking her opinion ahead of time would be prudent.

She doesn't sound like the type to accept being shuffled off to the senior center for an afternoon of bingo.

With so many older folks in Florida, there are plenty of activities for everyone -- she has earned the right to have a say.

Sun Cruz casino is not longer at Inlet Harbor. Sterling just shut down in Port Canveral. There is a Sun Cruz at the Port. A new gambling cruise was supposed to open in April, but it keeps delaying, not sure of the name. Somelike like Vegasnights, but I am not certain it that is correct.
