Hi, i will be going to spend about a week in Tokyo, coming from Osaka. The thing is, i've read so so much about the many hotels in Tokyo, and it has become a big headache. Basically, i am leaning towards a few hotels, namely Shinjuku Washington, Shinagawa Prince, Sunlite Shinjuku, and Toyoko Inns (Shinagawa-eki Takanawa-guchi, Tameike-sannou-eki Kantei-minami, Shinjuku Kabuki-cho, Ikebukuro Kita-guchi No.2, Ikebukuro Kita-guchi No.1)

The thing is, since i will be coming from Osaka to Tokyo, i have a few concerns.

1) i think its very important to have a hotel near to the JR station, since i will be purchasing the 7days pass. Of course, i would love the location of the hotel to be very accessible to the popular tourist attractions, esp the popular shopping districts of Ginza, Shibuya, and hopefully, it would be accessible to visit the likes of DIsneyland, Disneysea, Rikugien Gardens, Roppongi, and making my day trips to Hakone, 5 lakes etc. Odaiba, Tokyo Tower, etc.

2) I would prefer somewhere where i can mingle with the locals and enjoy good affordable shopping and eatings. I've no intention of going to the top-notched restaurants and doing high-ended shopping. So which hotel would provide me with such platforms to enjoy the meals and shops?

3) I would prefer to spend less than $120USD/nite if possible for a twin room, ie for me and my gf.

Sutton Place Hotel Ueno is 5 min walk across the street from JR Ueno Sta. Iriya exit. It is small but modern, opened in 2007, 11000 yen for double (slightly above your budget !?) but they provide free continental breakfast. www.thehotel.co.jp

Ueno is one of the major transport hubs in Tokyo, it's on JR Yamanote line and has subway connection to other parts of the city. A couple of minutes walk from JR Ueno Sta. is Keisei Ueno Sta. with easy rail connection to Narita Airport.

The Ameyoko Market area in Ueno has shops selling comparatively cheaper goods, popular with locals and is very crowded. Ueno-koen Park used to attract a lot of street-side performances during weekends.

THank you for your suggestion. However, what about the likes of the above mentioned Toyoko Inns, esp the ones in Shinagawa and Shinjuku. I've heard so much positive reviews about their location, and how convenient they are to the popular attractions of Tokyo. I'm more concern about accessibility to the many tourist hotspots, rather than comfort of the rooms.

Sunlite or Washington in Shinjuku. There is nothing much interesting in Shinagawa. Sunlite is an older hotel but much closer to shopping. Washington is in the office/govt area of West Shinjuku. Toyoko Kabuicho is the closest to Shinjuku station among your choices. Shinjuku is a transportation hub, and entertainment centre for local officie workers.

Sunlite Shinjuku or Toyoko Kabikicho. I don't memorize hotel rates so I don't know if they are within your budget, but should be close.

try searching for Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku. Last time I check, Zuji was giving special rate.

Newly renovated & close to everything.

The area is lively until late in the evening.

I lived in Tokyo in a house but when I went back recently I stayed at Mitsui Garden Hotel Ginza and it was awesome!! And there are nice cheap ramen houses there plus some really exy ones too. And close to subway & JR. But I do believe it's more than you're willing to spend...I may be wrong.

b roppongi is a relatively new hotel and is quite trendy but make sure if you book there, you request a room away from the main dori (road). The train line is right there and it's affordable.
