On Aug. 16, our group will be in Kyoto. We would like to see the Gozan no Okuribi (Mountain Bonfires). Out hostel and luggage are in Tokyo and the curfew is at 11. Would we be able to see the Gozan no Okuribi and get back to Tokyo by 11?

What is the latest departure time from Kyoto to Tokyo?

Thanks,

Deb

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's not possible.

The bonfire starts at 8pm (the first of five), with the last one starting at 8:20pm. Each bonfire takes about 30 minutes-- so you'll be leaving the site around 9pm. If you leave somewhere in between and rush to Kyoto station you may be able to catch the last shinkansen back to Tokyo, but still won't make it back by 11pm. No chance.

If the bonfires are important to you, I would suggest you to get a place to stay in Kyoto for that night.
