We are spending 4 nights in Tokyo in January 2009. We are a family of two adults and three boys aged 10, 8 & 6. We would like to see the main sights of Tokyo and do some shopping and want to know where is the best area to stay. Of the following hotels can you please provide some advice on where to stay.

Mandarin Oriental Tokyo

The Prince Park Tower Tokyo

Conrad Hotel Tokyo

Imperial Tokyo

Peninsula Tokyo

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Chinzan so

Palace Tokyo

Marunouchi Tokyo

Thanks

The Mandarin and Peninsula hotels are 5 star. located in the Nihonbashi and Yurakucho areas, respectively. Both hotels are fairly newly opened and very nice. Yurakucho is a better location than Nihonbashi for taking in the sites of Tokyo.

The Conrad is located not too far away at Shiodome, a large office complex. Its another fairly new hotel with some excellent restaurants and views of the harbor.

Imperial is the grand dame, a little dowdy but well loved by many. Many of the rooms have been refurbished, but its not up to the level of luxury expected at the other 5 star hotels in Tokyo. Location is excellent, the starting point for many visits to Tokyo by many visitors over the years.

Four Seasons at Chinzan So is nice, but too far away and inconvenient. Not recommended. Its seems to be a wedding palace.

Prince Park is one of the better value hotels on your list. Its also fairly new, located at Shiba Park. The location is not the best. I am a Prince Hotel hater, so no recommendation from me on this one.

Palace Hotel is directly across of the Imperial Palace gardens. Its a very old hotel, more dowdy than the Imperial. Its scheduled to be torn down at year end to be redeveloped.

Mandarin and Conrad are located in the top floors of office towers, so the views are good from all rooms.

You should also consider the new Ritz Carlton at Roppongi Midtown and the Grand Hyatt at Roppongi Hills. Both are convenient and have great restaurants as well.

Mandarin Oriental..can do connecting rooms, no swimming pool, nice views from rooms.

Prince Park Tower...children are not allowed to use swimming pool.

Conrad Tokyo...we found it cold in decor and service when we stayed there a couple of years ago. We will give it a second chance in September for one night free on points, though. Location is in a maze of offices and shopping centers.

Peninsula...great location, pool that kids can use, several options for connecting rooms, our pick for our paid nights in Tokyo this coming September.

FS Chinzan-so...great pool and garden, poor location for sights, a good portion of business is weddings on weekends.

Palace Hotel..pretty good location (walk to subway), not in the same class at all as the MO, Pen or FS.

Marunouchi Hotel...small rooms, stylish but small. Not sure about connecting rooms. Seems to be a poor value in comparison with the luxury hotel room size, facilities and prices.

Best location by a very long shot with respect to rail transport.
