Hi

Does anyone have any experience of using UK credit or debit cards in Japan? I am visiting Tokyo in a couple of weeks time and will be taking a Mastercard and a Halifax/Bank of Scotland debit card that is linked to Visa Electron - anyone know if these will be usable at most/any places??

Thanks

Hi, it depends on the purpose. Japan is more of a cash based society, however, for most major purchases, there is no problem (I've used my Visa debit as well as UK credit cards). I generally use cash at restaurants, though I have used credit cards a few times.

As for ATM's it's a different thing. Many Bank ATM's show the VISA etc symbols but will not take UK cards. Post offices do however take these as to City Bank branches (e.g Shinjuku), and 7-Eleven convenience stores. There is a list of ATM's that accept UK cards (trying to find the link..). One thing that also caught me out was that my international withdrawal limit is lower than my UK one (worth checking if you haven't).

I just got back from Japan and didnt have a problem purchasing things with my mastercard. Most larger shops and restaurants have chip and pin machines, though I did find a few small boutiques in Harajuku that accepted cards as well as a few small restaurants we frequented in Kyoto.

Didnt try any ATMs though.

Check out the post office's mastercard as they dont charge commission on overseas purchases... BONUS!!

Have a great time, I didnt want to come home, im so jealous :)

I have visited Japan twice and on the last trip used a Halifax Debit card in CitiBank, Post Office and the ATM's in 7Eleven stores with no problems.

Have a great trip.
