I am looking for a cheap place to stay, but not sure which area to choose. I've been looking at hotels in the Shinagawa (Princess Garden Meguro Hotel) and Asakusa areas (Skycourt Asakusa Hotel), as well as the Sakura Hotel in Hatagaya.

It seems like the Princess Garden Meguro Hotel is the closest one to a station out of these, but is it worth staying here instead of Asakusa or Hatagaya? It looks like Shinagawa is further away from the 'big sights' than Asakusa and Hatagaya, but closer to a station as I mentioned.

As this is my first trip to Tokyo, I want to stay close to wherever things are 'happening', but my vallet doesn't allow me to stay in the more 'posh' hotels in the centre.

Have anybody got any suggestions..what would be the best to choose out of these areas? Any other recommendations regarding hotels?

The Prince Garden Meguro is by far most convenient. Meguro Station is on the Yamanote Loop Line that circles central Tokyo. This line takes you to many happening places, such as Shinjuku and Shibuya in a short time without a transfer.

Meguro is also convenient to Roppongi Itchome Station.

Which one did you choose and what was it like? I am facing the same question. Thanks

I ended up staying at Akasaka Yoko Hotel, which is in Akasaka - close to the Roppongi area. It was a five minute walk to the closest station, so it's very convenient. I booked it through asiarooms: asiarooms.com/japan/tokyo/akasaka_yoko.html

Nice place -only bad thing was that the bathroom was a bit small, but I guess that's normal for Japan, from what I've heard anyway..

Would absolutely recommend this hotel.

But to answer the question about what area; I wouldn't stay in Asakusa, as it is a bit far out. Shinagawa would be your best out of those three, since it's on the Yamanote line.

Wow, Akasaka Yoko brings back some memories. I think I stayed there in '86 during the bubble. Our office was in the towers above Akasaka subway station down the street across from TBS. I too wouldn't recommend it to anyone because of the location. It's just too far away from everything compared to other options.

So teetravel, what did you end up deciding? I too am pondering and facing the same decision.
