Hi. I was planing to climb Mt. Catherine (not Mt. Sinai) with my wife. Knowing that hiring a guide is supposed to be obligatory, I have contacted Sheik Mousa who has a monopoly for guiding there. He claimed in his reply that the price went up recently and we have to pay 180EGP each for single guide (60 for guide and 60+60 for "office"). Is this outrageous price correct or a just a try to squeeze more money out of us? In fact, I am sure I can do the climb myself - do you think there is a way to avoid taking any guide? Thanks

I have seen your question both on TA and on TT, so I have asked a friend who arranges and guides tours and it does seem that the information is moreorless correct.

The only persons allowed to organise trips up Mount Catherine is Sheikh Moussa and Farag of Fox Camp. No way you can go up without their assistance - you will not be allowed. Aparantly there are only two entrances - one at Sheikh Moussa and one at Fox Camp. My friend has to pay LE 1000 for a group with Sheikh Moussa and LE 600 if with Farag. So obviously there is a difference in price but my friend does not know the price for individuals.

For Moses Mount / Mount Sinai ( same mountain different names ), it is now compulsory to have a guide with you and that costs LE 50. Of course, Mount Sinai will unfortunately be much more crowded as you get hundreds, and at times thousands, of tourists being bused up from Sharm.
